Chapter 9

Bittersweet Friday

For Ron, Friday couldn’t come fast enough. He labored through the week, wishing time could speed up so Friday could roll around sooner. Finally, Friday arrived and it was a glorious day. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, the whole world was good. Today’s the perfect day to tell Leila how I feel about her, Ron thought as he filled out some forms at his desk.

“Good morning, handsome,” Nancy greeted as she came up to Ron’s desk. Ron didn’t reply, still deep in thought about what he would say to Leila. Nancy waved her hand in front of Ron’s face.

“Hello, Earth to Ron. Come in Ron,” Nancy said, speaking close to Ron’s ear.

“What? Oh, Good morning, Nancy,” Ron replied, startled out of his daydreams. He resumed filling out his paperwork.

“Thinking about me?” Nancy shamelessly asked.

“Um, how can I say this without being rude? No…I…wasn’t…thinking…about…you,” Ron said, emphasizing each word.

“Alright, alright, jeez,” Nancy said. “Hey, about the mission Monday, are you scared?”

“Honestly, yeah I am. Raymond might suspect that we know something about his meeting with Tsang,” Ron admitted. “We’re gonna have to watch our backs. He might pull some surprises.”

“Do we actually know how Raymond Lam looks like?” Nancy asked.

“Negative. The team who tried to bust Raymond Lam a month ago, none of the members made it out alive. And Lau never actually took a picture of Raymond. He did give us a description. His next mission was to acquire physical evidence of how Raymond looks like, but he never made it,” Ron explained. “I guess that’s partly why I’m scared about our Monday mission. We have the disadvantage.”

“Okay, stop scaring me,” Nancy said. “Oh, by the way, I just noticed something. Why are you wearing a suit today? You look hotter than ever.”

“Nancy! I can’t believe you can actually say these things without dying of embarrassment,” Ron reprimanded. “Oh, and by the way, it’s none of your business.” He checked his watch. “Yo! It’s 5:45. I gotta go!”

He quickly tidied up his desk, picked up his bag, bid everybody goodbye, and ran out the door, leaving Nancy to wonder where he was going in such a hurry.

For Leila, she wished Friday would never come because Friday would mean the last day she could ever spend with Ron. When Friday rolled around, she didn’t care that the sun was shining or the sky was blue. She went through the day dazed, scarcely listening in her classes.

She walked slowly to where she was meeting Ron. I’m really going to miss him, Leila thought sadly as she walked. As she got closer to the bench, she saw that Ron was already there, checking his watch from time to time and looking around. Leila took a deep breath and went up to Ron.

“Ron, hi, hope you didn’t wait long,” Leila greeted as cheerfully as she could. Ron turned around and smiled broadly when he saw her.

“Leila! Not at all. Here, this is for you,” Ron said, revealing a single rose wrapped in clear plastic.

“Thanks,” Leila said, taking the rose and looking at Ron. “You’re wearing a suit.”

“Oh, yeah, because today is special,” Ron said, a little embarrassed. “Do you want to get something to eat first?”

“Um, sure,” Leila agreed reluctantly. One dinner wouldn’t hurt. I’ll just tell him after dinner. I want to spend as much time with him before I have to end it, she thought.

“C’mon. I know this restaurant near my home that has the best food,” Ron said, grabbing Leila’s hand and walking to his car.

As Ron drove, Leila remained silent, listening to Ron as he talked about different things. This is going to be really hard, Leila thought while she looked at Ron. After a few minutes, Ron stopped in front of a restaurant.

“Here it is,” he announced as he got out of the car and rushed to the passenger side to open the door for Leila. When they entered the restaurant, one of the waiters noticed them.

“Ron, my man! I see you brought a girl. You usually come alone,” the waiter exclaimed, slapping Ron on the back.

“Nicholas! Dude, stop embarrassing me in front of Leila,” Ron greeted. He introduced the both of them as Nicholas led them to a table.

“Here you go,” Nicholas said. “I’ll come by in a couple of minutes to get your orders.”

“Thanks Nic,” Ron said gratefully as Nicholas left. He turned to Leila.

“Are you okay? You’ve been so quiet,” Ron asked worriedly as he gazed at Leila’s downcast face.

“No, I’m fine. What’s good here?” Leila quickly asked as she looked over the menu.

“Just about everything,” Ron said, still looking at her. What’s going on? She used to be so cheerful, he thought.

Throughout the entire dinner, only a few words were exchanged. After they were done with dinner, Ron finally spoke up.

“Leila, I have something to tell you,” Ron started.

“Ron, I have something to tell you,” Leila said at the same time.

They looked at each other.

“Do you mind if we go somewhere else?” Leila asked.

“Of course,” Ron said.

After they paid the check and said goodbye to Nicholas, Ron and Leila left. They walked for a few minutes down the nearly empty street as the sky turned a beautiful violet-orange that indicated sunset. A slight breeze was blowing. Ron spoke up again.

“Leila, I have something to tell you,” Ron began.

“Ron, before you say anything, I better tell you what I want to say,” Leila interrupted, sensing what was coming. “Ron, I really value our friendship. These past few days have been so much fun.” She became silent again, looking away.

Ron stopped walking and turned to Leila.

“Leila, I-,” Ron said.

Leila interrupted again. “I think I know what you’re going to say. I just want to say I’m sorry that I’m going to disappoint you.” Her eyes started filling up with tears.

Ron saw Leila’s sad face and his heart almost broke in two. “What do you mean?”

“I’m sorry, Ron, but I can’t see you anymore,” Leila said, looking right in his face as a tear rolled down her cheek.

“What? Why not?” Ron looked really confused now. Everything was going great, right? How did the evening take such a horrific turn?

“I wish I could tell you, but I can’t,” Leila said, “Sometimes these things just don’t work out. Goodbye Ron.” She began to walk away.

“Leila!” Ron cried, catching up to her and grasping her arm. “What is it? Why can’t we see each other anymore?”

“Ron, please just stop asking any questions,” Leila said, brushing Ron’s hand away. She resumed walking again.

“Leila, I care about you. I’m falling in love with you,” Ron finally admitted. Leila stopped walking after she heard the last sentence, but she didn’t turn around.

“How can you love me?” Leila asked in a really soft voice. “We’ve only known each other for a couple of days.”

“I know. But for the past couple of days, I couldn’t stop thinking about you. You’re the first thing I think about when I wake up and your face is the last thing I see when I fall asleep,” Ron said, emotion flowing from his voice. He knew the last sentence he said was cheesy, but he was desperate. He couldn’t let her go. He started walking up to her. “Leila, please…just give me some time. Maybe someday, you’ll feel the same way about me.” He looked at Leila’s face, which wasn’t showing any emotion.

Leila, after hearing those words, felt like laughing and crying at the same time. She couldn’t believe he actually used that cheesy line, but she was moved by the way he said it. He said it with so much feeling, pouring his heart out to her. No, she had to be firm. No future can come out of this relationship. It’s better to let him go, she thought. He’s a cop. I can’t fall in love with him, she reminded herself. But she knew it was too late. She had already fallen in love with him.

“I’m really sorry. Please just forget about me,” Leila said, not looking at Ron. She started to run away, tears streaming down her face. Her heart felt like breaking.

It was too late for Ron’s heart. His had already shattered into a million pieces. His vision started to blur as his eyes overflowed with tears. All he could do was stare at Leila as she ran further and further away from him.
