Chapter 1

A question of soul-mate

Flashback……..10 years ago

The little girl stood next to her grandmother picking flowers on top of the hill. The sky was clear blue; the wind breezing through the air on this hot day was welcome by all the villagers. The little girl plucked the flowers and put it in her basket. She smiled as she lifted her face upward and let the breeze caress her skin. She felt wonderful, she was surrounded in a field of wildflowers and she has her grandmother by her side. The little knew that one day she would have to leave this little village, but she wanted to enjoy herself as much as possible before summer ends. Spending the summer with her grandparents was the little girl’s favorite.

“Honey…come, your favorite lavender flowers!” Grandma waved her hands and then pointed to the lavender flowers. The little girl saw the flowers and quickly ran over. She reached down and grabbed a handful of flowers, and smelled deeply into it. The little girl saw her grandmother often smelled the flowers; it makes her think of happiness and love.

“Grandma?” the little girl asked.

“Hmm…yes darling?” answered her grandmother.

“I’m almost eight years old…can I ask you why you love grandpa?” the little girl asked. Her grandmother smiled with a twinkle in her eyes she answered,

“Of course you can ask me anything…hmm, now why do I love your grandpa? There are so many reasons why…but let me share a little secret with you.” The grandmother lean down and whispered in her granddaughter’s ears.

“It’s because your grandpa is my soul mate.” The little girl’s formed an O, but still looked confused.

“Um…grandmas, what is a soul mate and how do I know when I meet my soul mate?” the little girl asked.

“You will know he is your soul mate when you meet him.” Her grandmother answered.

“But how grandma?” the little girl asked.

“Your heart will beat one hundred mile per hour nonstop, and your stomach will ache and it’ll feel as if there are butterflies floating around.” The grandmother said with a chuckle. The little girl frowned.

“Really grandma? Is that true? Because there’s this boy in my class and he makes me feel like there’s butterflies in my stomach all the time…I don’t know if my heart beat one hundred hours per mile because the teacher’s only teaching us addition and subtraction; but since I feel like that around him…grandma do you think he’s my soul mate?” The little girl wondered. Her grandmother smiled and patted her head.

“You’ll know for sure if he is or not when you are older.”

End of flashback………………………………………….

Crystal heart beats so fast she felt as if it was pumping one hundred miles per hour. She suddenly felt an ache from her lower abdomen; it felt as if there were butterflies floating inside her stomach. She remembers her grandmother’s words…and she knows for sure now that HE is her soul mate. Edison Chen left Taipei with his parents and moved to mainland China the summer that Crystal was with her grandparents. When she came back from her visit, she wanted to test if Edison was her soul-mate but he was gone. Today is the first day of Taipei High school; Crystal felt excited because this is her senior year and she was happy to see all of her friends, and teachers. Crystal love being in school and spending time with her friends. She learned from her grandma that life is only as good as how you want it. This particular morning, the school was buzzing with excitement with the news of a transfer student. Crystal did not paid attention to all the gossiping, and was not aware of a transfer student. When the teacher announced to the class, he motioned for the student to walk inside the class. That’s when Crystal saw him…the moment she saw him, her heart started beating. At that moment, she saw bright yellow light shining around him, and she knew in her heart of heart that he was made just for her. She confirmed beliefs when he introduced himself and said,

“I used to live here when I was younger…my name’s Edison Chen”.

………………………………………………………

The problem is________ Edison Chen does not feel the same way about her. He is always surrounded by beautiful girls and he flirts with almost all the girls, but he avoids Crystal like the plaque. She wrote him letters, and followed him around, but he continues to ignore her. Finally, fed up Crystal made up her mind to confront him; she waited for him by the classroom door. It was a Friday, and Crystal knew she would catch him if she waited by the door. As usual, Edison was surrounded by girls; he didn’t even glance at Crystal when he walked by. Crystal grab his arm and said,

“Please, I need to talk to you.” Edison signs in frustration and handed his books to one of the girls next to him.

“What is it?” He asked, clearly annoyed.

“Did you read any of the letters I sent you?” She asked. Edison shrugged and said

“No”.

“Why not?” She asked. Edison walked up to Crystal; he was standing so close that their nose almost touched.

“Let me make this clear to you…whatever your name is; I don’t like you and I never will. So leave me alone, you’re ruining your complexion with that puppy look on your face! Go get a life!” He said. Crystal felt all eyes on her, and after a moment laughers erupted in the classroom and the hallway. Crystal felt as if everybody was laughing at her. She was so embarrassed she did not know what to do; she turned around and started running out of the school. Oh grandma…you are so wrong…I don't think that's how we find our soul mate or my soul mate, because Edison Chen is definitely not a soulmate material! Crystal thought.
