Chapter 19

Aaron slowly turns to face her and sighs, "mei.. remember earlier when we were talking at the bus stop?"

She nods frantically, "of course I remember, knowing that ge has a girlfriend surprises me. Now that I think about it I've never seen you with a girl at all, you mostly stay at home you don't even have a cell phone, how did you meet her?"

Aaron couldn't even laugh about how she viewed him, "I met her when I was young... I've known her for a long time..."

Ya Tou seemed so interested, "have you been with her since then?"

"Yes," He says with no hesitation, "but... she left me a long time ago."

She frowns, "wh-why would she leave you?"

A pause, "because... she felt guilty."

"Guilty?"

Aaron pauses as he sees Ya Tou's clear expression, "because our mom died..."

Her eyes looks confused, "o-our? You... you guys had the same mom?"

"We were step brothers and sisters..." every word he said was encarved onto young Ya Tou's mind, "even though it was forbidden... I love her with all my heart, more than my life..."

"Ge--" Ya Tou pauses to catch her shaky breath, "y-you... it can't be Gui..." she forces herself to say, "you and Gui..." tears form at the corners of her eyes, "you and Gui are impossible..."

He knew in the very depths of his heart Ya Tou would say that, he forces a smile and looks at her with a bright expression, "I was just kidding."

Ya Tou became confused by his smile, by his words, "but... they sound so real--"

He just pats her on her head with a fading smile and sighs. She saw the look in his eyes again, he was worried about something, what intrigued her the most was what he had just told her. Whether it was a joke or not, she believed something was wrong and she knew Aaron was planning on not telling her.

Ah Ben is digging through some old pictures that were left in the basement of the house. He comes across an old family picture album. He blows away the dust and begins to open it. Pictures of Aaron's childhood had seemed to fade, as if it had not been remembered, or at least someone was trying to forget them. Flipping through the pages, Ah Ben comes across pics of Aaron and Gui's teenage years which hasn't been touched in so long. As he flips the page a picture falls out. He picks it up and looks at it... he found what he was looking for. It was a picture of a young woman holding onto a small boy... the small boy was Aaron.

"What are you looking for?"

Startled, he quickly looks back and sees his dad coming down the stairs towards him.

Ah Ben stands up continuing to hold onto the picture and the photo album, "dad..."

He sees the picture and takes it away from him with a faint smile, "are you looking for pictures? You even found the picture I've been trying to hide."

"Hide?" He questions, "why would you try to hide that picture?"

His father looks at him and sat him down next to him to explain, "this picture... was the last picture taken of Aaron's childhood... because that day Aaron's mom passed away."

Ah Ben saw the remorse in his father's eyes. He didn't dare to say a word.

"Aaron always hated me, after I remarried. He had believed I betrayed his mom. It isn't until Gui and her mom moved in, that Aaron began to smile again. I wanted to give him a mom, wanted him to have one, to be loved by one... it seems that's not what he wanted at the time. He just needed a father to give him the love that he missed out on when he was young... even I couldn't do that for him..." He forces a smile and looks at Ah Ben, "thank goodness he has a brother like you."

"Dad..." Ah Ben says, "h-how... did Aaron's mom pass away?"

His smile wasn't so bright and he lets out a faint sigh, "she was so weak... it wasn't until after giving birth to Aaron that she found out she had acute nonlymphocytic leukemia. She refused treatment, she just wanted to live her life the way it was suppose to be... she told me 'if you're meant to live till 100 you will live till 100, if you're meant to die you're meant to die, nothing can stop you from dying.'" His voice became shaky and his eyes filled with tears which refuses to fall. He clears his throat, "she lived on for six more years... I couldn't do anything for her."

Ah Ben slowly hugs his dad and comforts him. What he wanted to know... ended up hurting his father. He told himself that day, he would never hurt his father ever again. Because he knows how it's like to lose a father, he didn't want to know that feeling again.

"Gui!" Wang Zi calls as she peeks her head out of the window.

She turns back to look at him with a faint smile, "scared?" She swings her bag to the side and puts her legs out the window.

"Are you crazy!" He quickly holds onto her shoulders, "what if you fall? We're on the tenth floor!"

She continues to smile and sighs, "don't worry. If I fall, call the ambulance then." She swings her other leg out the window as well and gives him a deep expression, "remember if my dad asks where I am, you don't know, ok?" She then grabs the window sill and lowers herself to the ledge of the building.

Wang Zi looks out at her and sighs, "becareful then, ok?"

She looks up at him and just smiles, "ok." She continues her way lower and lower down the building.

He watches as she finally places her feet on the ground, looks up at him and signals OK. She then ran off. He sighs and takes in a deep breath. "Why am I worried?" He questions himself, "Gui's done this so many time... she's practically a professional at running away..." He closes the window and falls onto the bed for some sleep.

"Ma, don't worry I'm really ok."

She sighs as she's on the other line, "you're really not going to come home tonight then?"

Gui pauses before she could give her final answer, "I want to... but... I have somewhere I want to go right now. Maybe I'll be home the day after tomorrow."

"The day after tomorrow? Where are you going? Why are you going for such a long period?"

"Ma, I'll be ok," Gui holds onto the payphone as she takes a look at the time on her watch, "it's already 9 o'clock?" She questions, "where's Aaron? I want to ask him something."

"Aaron?" She questions, "didn't Ya Tou tell you? Aaron's at the hospital, he won't be home tomorrow."

"Hospital?" Gui's tone changes, she becomes worried, "what is he doing there?"

"The doctor said he'll be fine, he'll be able to discharge in the morning. Ya Tou really didn't tell you?"

Gui pretends not to care and sighs, "I must've forgot. Ma, don't worry about me then, tell dad I'll be fine. The bus is about to leave," she lies as an excuse to get on her way.

"Ok then. Becareful ok?"

"Ok, bye bye," Gui hangs up and takes in a deep breath as those words echoes in her mind, "Aaron's at the hospital..." She lets out a shaky breath and quickly makes her way there.
