"WHOO ! GO _______ !" Without knowing, I stand up and start clapping my hands, cheering her on. The game stops and _______, slightly sweating, turns around to face me. For a moment, she gapes at me, her hair billowing around her shocked face. Absent-mindedly, she pushes her hair back from her face and smiles at me.
It's like the world-my world- has stopped. My hearts stops beating, butterflies forms in my stomach and my hand grows really really clammy. She picks up her scrunchie and tie her hair back into a ponytail. Giving me one final wave, she and the rest of the team get back to the game. Realising that I have been holding my breath, I open my mouth and let out a big sigh. Keeping my eyes glued to _____, I sit back down, prop my chin on my hands and watch.
I find myself drifting off to one of my daydreams. This time, or rather, as usual, ____ is in it.
We're playing basketball. I'm hot on her heels, trying to snatch the ball from her. She merely laughs as she smoothly dribbles the ball away from me. I stop at the middle of the court, finally realising that there isn't any chance that I can steal the ball away from her. Instead, I stand there and watch as she scores, yet again. She lets the ball roll away as she twists her body around to face me. Grinning, she holds out her arm for a hug.
I pound across the court, my arms dramatically spread wide, anticipating to curl her up against my chest, bury my nose into her hair and inhale ...
And then, just like that, she's gone. And I'm hugging thin air.
"Max ? Max ... ? MAX !"
With a sudden jerk, I look up. Looming above me is ______, her hands on her hips and a wet-looking towel thrown around her shoulders.
"Training's over. Wanna eat dinner with me ?"
I stand up first before answering, "Sure, where ?"
"I don't know. Any restaurant. I'm hungry and I don't care if I have to eat off the floor ..."
I throw my head back and laugh. Absent-mindedly, as we walk towards the entrance of the school, where, probably, her driver is waiting, I reach out, grab her scrunchie and slide it down her ponytail. She doesn't seem to notice that her hair is down as she continues walking with her eyes on the ground. I shove the scrunchie into my pocket.
Out of the sudden, somewhere inside my pocket, my phone starts vibrating, indicating that someone had just sent me a message. I lean against the backseat of ______'s car and fish out my phone from my pants pocket. Tiffany's name appears on the screen. I hesitate for a moment before opening the message.
"I'm going back to Japan, can you meet me at the airport ?"
I stare at the message, absorbing the sudden news. My thoughts are in a frantic frenzy, trying to decide whether I should go to the airport or not.
I glance at ______. Her hand is on the window and her chin is propped on her raised hand. She's looking out of the window, apparently still oblivious by the fact that her scrunchie is gone. I think quietly for a while before opening my mouth, addressing the driver.
"Can you drop me off at the airport ? I have to say goodbye to someone ..."
It's going to be weird to say goodbye to Tiffany again.
______, beside me, flinches at the sound of her name. She still hasn't forgotten about the incident at Junghoon's birthday party, and she's absolutely convinced that Tiffany will somehow get revenge on her. But so far, during the past few days, nothing bad has happened.
We cruise along the highway in silence. I stare at my hands as ______ continues gazing out of the car window. Her free hand is just a few inches from mine. I want to reach out and hold it against mine but somehow, I can't. Not when, inside my mind, I know that I'll be meeting Tiffany in a few minutes. So, instead, I scoot closer to the window on my right and glue my eyes on the road outside the window.
"Master Shim. We're here," the driver informs me. I break out from my reverie and once realising that the car is already in front of the airport, I straighten up and turn the car door handle.
_______'s still not looking at me. I swallow the lump in my throat and go out of the car. I fight the impulse to go back in, pull her towards me and kiss me. I step out of the car ... One foot before the other. Then, without warning, I lean back in, grab _______'s arm and pull her towards me for a kiss. Since she's obviously caught by surprise, I notice her eyes widening to the size of small dinner plates. She's limp for a moment before she finally decides to kiss back. I mentally count to 5 before reluctantly pulling back.
Grinning, I turn to her. "I'll be back. Wait for me, okay ?"
"I can't promise that," she mumbles, just as her stomach lets out a deep rumble.
I ruffle her hair before dashing into the airport. I crane my neck and silently graze my eyes over the crowd, looking for Tiffany. I find her forlornly clutching her suitcase, sitting on a soft bench and looking around.
Taking a deep breath and convincing myself that I can do this, I make my way to her. She looks up as soon as she sees me advancing. She holds out her arms for a hug and once again, I hesitate before giving in. Her head rests on my shoulder as I half-heartedly wrap my arms around her.
"I'm going back to Japan," She whispers, still not pulling back.
"Why ?"
She doesn't answer. I sigh and close my eyes. Immediately, memories of my childhood with Tiffany comes flooding back into my mind. For a minute, I thought that my feelings for Tiffany was back but as I do a double take, I find out that it had been ____ all along.
The mystery girl inside my mind. The one who always appear when I least expect it to. The one whom I've always craved for.
It's _______. It's her.
"Tiffany ..." I gently push her back. "I love you ... but not the same way I love ______. You are, and always had been, my friend. I'll miss you when you're in Japan. have a nice trip." I lean down and softly kiss her on the cheek. Then, without turning back, I walk out of the airport.
[Your POV]
I stretch across the leather back seat, raising my arms up and trying to reach for the car ceiling. It has only been 3 minutes since Changmin went into the airport, and already, I feel impatient. Not to mention hungry too. Training was a killer.
Then, as if I just realised something, I sit up again and kneel down on the car floor.
My scrunchie. It's gone.
I grope under the seats but my hands comes in contact with nothing but air. I reach into the leather seat but still, yet again, I find nothing but a coin. Which I pocketed. I'm sure no one would mind. Finally, I give up and flop down on the seat and once again, stretching out on it. I close my eyes and sigh of exhaustion.
I must have drifted off to a quick nap because as I opened my eyes, my head is comfortably resting on Changmin's lap and once again, we're cruising smoothly along the highway. My house is quite far away from the airport so I'm guessing that we still have a long way to go.
I sit up and lean against the cool leather seat. Changmin tears his gaze away from the window to look at me.
"You're awake."
"Obviously."
Silence ensues after that. I fiddle with my hands, carelessly twiddling my thumbs. Then, Changmin's hands snakes into mine.
"Tiffany went back to Japan," he mumbles softly, almost inaudible for me to hear. He seems deep in thought.
"YEAH- ! Erm, I mean, ooh, yeah, how sad ..." I choose my words carefully. Even though Tiffany's a sad old witch, she was still Changmin's childhood friend. I have to respect her. Somehow.
Changmin nods.
Again, there is silence after that. I stroke Changmin's hand, which was intertwined with mine before turning to him and ask the question that had been lingering inside my mind for quite some time now.
"Max, what's wrong ?"
The sky outside is beginning to get dark.
Okay, it's beginning to turn orange. Seriously, what's the difference ?
The orange light seeps into the car window, illuminating Changmin's grim face. He looks down and takes a deep breath. I lean forward expectantly, waiting for his answer. He opens his mouth and ...
"Nothing."
Grrr.
