Everything. Everything could go wrong. What if his plan doesn't work ? What if they don't believe us ? God, why did I ever agree to this ?
"Ready, sweetie ?" Changmin pokes his head around my door.
I glare at him. "Stop calling me that ! We're only pretending to go out. Besides, no one's around. I'm still not used to us not fighting and getting all ... Mushy to each other."
Changmin grins before stepping into my room. He walks up to me, his hands snaking its way around my waist. He rests his head on my shoulder and stare at my reflection at the mirror.
"How does it feel to be my girlfriend ?" He asks. I clench my fist by my side and tell myself that I can't hit him this time. Whatever happens, I must learn how to NOT hate him. I must learn to endure whatever he says. I must learn how to be his girlfriend.
Aish. The things I do for my father.
I smile at him. "Wonderful."
Foolishly, he straightens up, take my hand and lead me downstairs, where my family and his family are seated. My father and his father are both giving each other death glares and once again, you can cut the tension with a knife. I think both of them are trying not to kill each other.
A sickening smile plastered on my face, I take a seat beside my father and link my arm to his. Not only because I want to, but also to stop him from lunging at Mr Shim. Changmin, on the other hand, takes a seat beside HIS father.
"Appa, Umma ..." Changmin starts. "_______ and I have something to tell you all."
Oh God, here we go. I don't know if I can do this. I'm not ready to date my enemy. I'm not even sure if they'll believe us, considering how often Changmin and I fought in front of them before. This is a bad plan. Maybe I should just drop out.
Changmin gives me an expectant look, mentally telling me to tell them the rest of the news. I gulp a few times. My mouth seems to be generating a lot more saliva than usual. Man, I hope I don't drool when I open my mouth ...
"Changmin and I are ..." I take another deep breath. "We're ... Dating."
My father, who was staring at some space earlier, snaps out from his train of thoughts long enough to shout, "WHAT ?!"
My mother snaps her fingers in glee. Although I don't know why. "I knew it ! After all those years of constant bickering, I knew that somehow, deep inside, both of them has feelings for each other."
I am trying not to gag right now and I'm sure Changmin's doing the same.
"What do you mean, DATING ?!" Changmin's father stands up. I tighten my grip on my father, in case he decides to stand up too. The saliva level in my mouth is rapidly increasing and currently, I am seriously scared to open my mouth.
"Why, that's great !" My father yells.
Huh ?! I catch Changmin's eye and equally, he's looking bewildered. And at the same time, shocked. I mean, like ... HUH ?!
My father pulls me up and hugs me. "You and Changmin are perfect for each other ! Did you hear that ?!" He turns to Mr Shim in delight. "They're finally expressing their feelings for each other ! After all these years !"
"Huh ?!" I gape at both men, who are now dancing around the living room like a pair of 7 year olds. Changmin's mother pushes him towards me, her eyes full of ... TEARS ?!
She looks at us before clamping her hand over her mouth. "You two look so ..."
Her words are cut off by the tears gushing out from her eyes. My mother is offering her a piece of tissue.
Changmin and I look at our parents; his mother crying and both of our fathers dancing around the room in delight. We glance at each other and smile. I think we're both thinking the same thing.
The plan works.
(THE NEXT DAY)
[Changmin's POV]
Since the night when both ____ and I announced the news, our fathers seem to have completely forgotten about their fight. In fact, my father has finally stopped drinking and ____ tells me that her father seems to be better now.
My plan is working just fine.
Except for one thing. ____ doesn't seem to be interested. She has made a list of things of what I can and cannot do in public and gave it to me. Some of the things she wrote is that I'm not allowed to kiss her. Or hold her hands. Or even go near her.
I step into the classroom and look around the room to find ____. I asked her last night to wait for me at the entrance of the school so that we can go in together. But when I got there, she was nowhere to be found.
That idiot.
I spot her on her seat, as usual, talking to Yunho and Junsu. She throws her head back and laugh at something Junsu says. As if in some kind of trance, I find myself staring at her for while, with my mouth open. But, after realising what I'm doing, I close my mouth and make my way towards my so-called girlfriend.
"We need to talk," I drag her up and haul her out of the classroom. Once we're outside, I let go of her wrist and go nearer to her. "Look, _____, if we want this plan to work, you have to act like as if you're really my girlfriend. But what you have been doing this past few days isn't what I have in mind. You're literally giving me the cold shoulder. What kind of girl does that to her own boyfriend ?"
She blinks at me. "Changmin, we're only pretending to go out. I only have to act like your girlfriend when we're in front of our parents. When we're both in school, you're my enemy. And that's it."
"_____, this is hard for me too, okay ? I know you really hate me but can you just play along for a while ? Just until both our fathers settle the matter between them ? Or until you can think of something else, that is ..." I grab her wrist and pull her towards me. "After all, you ARE, for now, my girlfriend."
We're so close that I can feel her heart thumping against her chest. She hesitates for a while.
"Fine. I'll play along."
I grin down at her. "Good."
"AHEM !"
Both of us look sideways, only to find out that our form teacher is looking at us, her arms folded as she waits for an explanation on why we're not inside the classroom. And why we're so near each other.
Immediately, _____ pushes me back. Both of us bows to to the teacher before scuttling into the classroom, giggling.
I sit down on my seat and didn't realise, until now, that my heart is beating very very fast. And I think I know why.
[Your POV]
"______ !"
I stop walking and whip around. Changmin, his bag flapping against his back, is running towards me. I wait for him to catch up before walking again.
"So, you walk home instead of driving now ?" He asks me.
"Yeah. I'm not as lazy as you think, Changmin. Besides, my house isn't that far away from here."
In silence, both of us continue walking. Every now and then, Changmin's arm bumps again mine and everytime it does that, without explanation, electric sparks shoots all over my body.
"Changmin," Still walking, I look sideways at him. "Have you ever been in love ?" Almost after I ask that, I mentally kick myself. Of all the things I can ask him, why do I have to blurt out THAT question ?! Now he's going to think that-
Aish. Never mind.
Changmin looks in front and thinks for a moment. "I don't know. I mean, true, I've dated a lot of girls before but none of them has made me feel like I'm in love ..."
I place both my hands behind my back and start marching, the thing I always do when I'm thinking. Okay, I know, I'm weird. But ever since I started walking, when I want to think, I will always put both my hands behind my back and march. Like those soldiers in a marching band.
"So why do you keep dating different girls all the time ?" I ask him.
"I don't know ... You know what, now that you asked me that question, I've been thinking. There IS one girl ... That makes me feel like I'm in love. Problem is, I don't know if she likes me back," Changmin looks at his shoes, as if there's something interesting on it.
"Changmin, if I'm going to pretend to be your girlfriend ... Then I might as well start now," I blurt out. Again, I make a note to myself to commit suicide later on. WHY DO I KEEP SAYING THE WRONG THING ?
Changmin stops walking and I do the same. Suddenly, a gust of wind blows in our direction.
"Well then, if we want to make it look as official as possible, then I might as well do something ..." He flashes me a forlorn smile.
I stare back at him, quizzically. "What are you- ?"
Without warning, Changmin takes my hand and kneels down on the pavement. "_____, will you be my girlfriend ?" The soft breeze tousles his brown hair. He stares up at me with those mismatched eyes. For a moment, I'm ... In a trance. But almost immediately, I break out from it.
"Pabo. There's no one around !" I hit him on the head.
"OWWWWW ... AISH," Rubbing his head, he stands up and lets go of my hand. "Good point though. There has to be a lot of people around ..."
"But still. Nice proposal," I compliment. He smiles at me.
"Changmin !" A girl calls Changmin from afar ...
