Chapter 9

[Your POV]
Finally, Changmin agreed to let Junghoon stay at home with the maids. I can't believe how overprotective he can get over an 8 year old. Especially when Junghoon isn't even our real son. Still, this is something I've never seen before in Changmin so I might as well enjoy it.

Impatiently, I tap my left foot and take a peek at my wristwatch. School was over, like, 10 minutes ago and Changmin asked me to wait for him at the entrance. I look like a fool over here- WHERE IS HE ? Yunho and Junsu, luckily, are here to keep me company.

Something inside my pocket vibrates. Slightly startled, because only a minute ago, I was distracted by the sky, I shove my hand into my skirt pocket and fish out my handphone. I glance at the caller ID. Umma.

I flip my phone open and clamp it on my ear. "Yobosaeyo ?"

"______ !" My mother's voice falters as she says my name. I think she's crying or something.

"Umma ? What's wrong ? Why are you crying ?" I push myself back from the pillar I was leaning on. My mother rarely cries, unless it's something totally serious. I hope she's okay.

"Your Appa, _____. He's in t-t-the hospital ... S-s-stroke ..." Her words are cut off as she starts sobbing again. I put a hand over my mouth and suppress a gasp.

"I'll be there !" I hang up as soon as my mother tells me which hospital is it. Hastily, I pick up my schoolbag from the floor and start briskwalking away from the school. The driver isn't here right now. I told him to get a day-off.

AISH !

"_____, where are you going ?" Junsu calls after me. I ignore him and run out of the school.

The hospital is seriously far from here. I don't know if I can make it. Well, whatever it takes, I'll do it. I'll walk all the way to the hospital. My father's like is at stake. I can't risk not showing up. Just in case, this time, he doesn't survive again.

This would probably be the 3rd time my father had a stroke. The first time he had one was when I was 9 and he was reading aloud to me when suddenly, the colour drained from his face and he collapsed right off the chair. I panicked so much that I vomited. Enough said.

Argh, these shoes are totally not meant for walking. I nibble on my lip and try to concentrate on the pain as tears starts clogging up my eyes. Suddenly, something wet splashed onto my cheek. Bewildered, I look up and rain droplets starts falling on my face. Black, ominous clouds gathered above me and out of the blue, it's raining. Very heavily.

I don't get it. The weather was fine not long ago.

This day just keeps on getting better and better.

First, Tiffany deliberately stuck out her foot when I walking to my seat, so that I tripped and fell flat on my face. Worst part was that Changmin didn't even notice me falling down so I had to get up by myself.

Okay, with some help from Junsu. But still.

And then my mother tells me that my father is at the hospital again and NOW, it's raining !

Frustrated but still refusing to cry, I kick at the wet leaves in front of me. Attempting to do so, I skid on them instead and land hard on my ass.

"ARGHHHHHHHH !" I shout to the sky, to whoever is listening. "DO YOU HATE ME THAT MUCH ?!"

[Changmin's POV]
I look out nervously out of the classroom window. I can't believe this teacher is making me stay back from something I didn't even do. Who cares about stupid homework ?!

The rain splatters on the window. I chew on my lip as I think about _____, standing outside the school, waiting for me. Probably, by now, she's fuming mad. I hope she has an umbrella with her.

I look down at my paper and start scribbling the answers, not caring whether they're correct or not. Finally, as I write my last sentence, I throw the paper at my teacher's table, grab my back and dash out of the room. Only a few students who are unfortunate enough to not own an umbrella are hanging out by the entrance of the school, waiting for the rain to subdue. Yunho and Junsu are on of those people.

I run up to them. "Guys, do you know where _____ is ?"

Yunho looks at me. "I thought she was supposed to wait for you here ..."

"But then she got a call from her mother and after that, she ran away," Junsu continues.

I glance at the rain again. She went away ? In this weather ? Last night, she told me that she instructed the driver to get a day-off because from now on, she wants to walk home form school.

Aish, _____ ...

"Thanks," I hastily thank the both of them before stepping out from the shade. Not caring whether I'm getting drenched, I run out of the school. Minutes passed by and I'm soaked to the bone, but still, _______ is nowhere to be found. Maybe she's already home.

Nah, her house is quite far from school and considering how heavy the rain is, she couldn't have gone far. Nevertheless, I continue walking. My bag is getting heavier by the minute.

For 10 minutes, I walk along the pavement, drenched like a sewer rat and desperately gasping for air, due to my somehow heavy schoolbag. I stop walking for a minute to catch a few gulps of air. Bent double, I clutch my knees and inhale heavily.

Suddenly, something catches my eye. Someone is standing under the tree but the rain is so heavy that I can't really see who it is. Everything seems so blur. Cautiously, I make my way towards the tree. I'm startled to find a girl, wearing the same uniform as me, hugging herself. Her hair is covering her face and she's profusely shivering. I listen hard as she sniffs without looking up. Her bag, dumped on the wet floor beside her, seems vaguely familiar ...

"_____ ?" I whisper.

She looks up, half of her hair covering her face. Despite of that, I can recognise ______'s face. It's definitely her. But ... what is she doing here ?

I reach out and push the soaked hair away from her face. Her eyes are swimming with tears and she's continuously sniffing. "Max ... my father ..."

But before she can say anything, she falls forward, towards me. I catch her before she hits the floor. Her eyes are closed. She's knocked out.

She's been standing under this tree for ... I don't know ... nearly an hour now. And believe me, this tree doesn't give much shade from the rain. I pick up her schoolbag and sling it over my shoulder, next to my own and adjust her until I'm carrying her, bridal style.

Now what ?

Struggling hard, I fish out my handphone and dial my driver's number. Good thing my phone is waterproof. After a few rings, my driver picks up and before he an say anything, I start retelling everything to him, telling him that he needs to pick me up, PRONTO.

_____'s head lolls on my chest as I stare down at her face. Even though it's streaked with tears, she's still beautiful. And I can't believe I'm carrying her right now.

After a few minutes of waiting, the car finally arrives. The driver, carrying an umbrella, steps out of the car, walks around it and opens the backdoor. Gratefully, I slide ____ inside before going in. The driver closes the door and steps into the drivers' seat, looks back to check if we're okay and start driving off.

Slowly, I take _____'s head and rest it on my lap. We're already drenched so what does it matter if her hair is making my pants wet ? For 4 to 5 minutes, the car zooms along the road. I look out of the window and find out that it just stopped raining.

OH GREAT. Gee, thanks.

Finally, we stop right in front of my house. The sun is already setting, making the surrounding a faint red-ish tinge. As I look up, I can see a rainbow. A perfect way to end a not so perfect day.

I step out of the car, ignoring the schoolbags and grab ______ again, carrying her into my house. My parents, according to the maids, are out for dinner so I'm all alone here. I struggle up the stairs, and into my room, carrying the slightly drenched ______ to it. Once I reached my room, I walk inside and lay _____ on my bed. I snatch a dry towel on the foot of my bed and start wiping her dry.

Why didn't I take her back to her house ? Why did I take her back to mine ?
