Chapter 9

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

~~~~~~~~~~~`
(“Don't wanna close my eyes. I don't wanna fall asleep cause I'd miss you baby.” Aerosmith.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It was the time when all younger and older would be in bed, all but JaeJoong. He lay on his bed, eyes wide awake. The room so quiet that nothing cold be heard. Only Jae's heavy breathing could be heard in the room. It was dark, since the room's light was off, except for the reflection of the half moon through the small window. He was unable to sleep despite his tiredness from work. This had been routine for the past couple of days. The responsible guy who went to sleep early, now waited until it was past midnight.

Why? What was making his mind and heart restless? It wouldn't take a scholar to figure out. (The apple of his eyes was the one keeping him awake, who else could it be. Unmistakably, the apple of his eyes happened to be named Park Hanna.) The name itself brought a smile to his smooth face. The smile that appeared on the corner of his lips, reached up to his bright and brown eyes, like he had won million dollar lottery.

Thinking back to the day his last awkward phone conversation with her, his mind and heart were somewhere else, far away from this world. It wasn't the stuff they talked about, nor the awkwardness, but the voice he very much came to like. It had become as addicting and sweet as his favorite song. If possible, he wanted to hear it once again.

~Flashback~

“Are you serious? Call her and say what?” Jae asked in disbelief.

“First ask her if she got home safely last night....then the conversation will come to you naturally.” Yoochun said.

“You make it sound like it is as easy as ordering pizza.”

“Actually, ordering pizza is not easy since you have no idea who the stranger you are talking to on the other line is. Trust me on this, it is a piece of cake.” Yoochun said, as he handed the phone receiver to Jae, ignoring Jae's protest and left the kitchen.

Jae couldn't understand what the man was thinking, telling him to call the person he didn't think could bear to face any time soon. 'This guy is asking for a death wish if anything happens,' he thought.

As time passed, he still found no courage to do and he continued to look at the black phone receiver in his hand. “What the heck! What is the worse thing that could happen? It is not like I have done anything wrong to her,' he said, a little louder than what was supposed to be a whisper.

“That's what I'm trying to tell you.” That same voice startled Jae from behind.

Jae turned around to face him and glared at Yoochun in annoyance. “Yah, what was that? Never mind, you stupid brat.”

“Hyung, why are you getting annoyed for? I'm just trying to help you here. So, treat me nicely.” Yoochun said, as he sat down again.

“Is that an order?" Jae asked, although he wasn't expecting an answer. "You'd better shut up before I kick your butt.” Jae paused. “By the way, how did you get her number?”

“Humm... Do you have to know?”

“Yes, I do. If I didn't, I wouldn't ask, right?”

“Well, I got it from--”

“JiHye?” Jae cut him off.

“How did you-”

“Right?” Again, Jae interrupted him.

“Hmm... yeah.” Yoochun said as he got up from his seat, feeling uncomfortable with the look the other man was giving him, and stood, leaning against the coffee table.

“Hyung, why are you giving me THAT look?”
Yoochun's priceless expression made him giggle. He knew he had caught him off guard, but he didn't expect that reaction from a player like Yoochun. He held back his laugh and pretended like he didn't know what the other man was talking about. “What look?”

“Whatever Hyung, I'm not stupid. Just don't get a wrong idea. She is not one of my "toys" as you call them. We're just friends like you and I are.”

“I didn't say anything so you don't have to explain to me.”

“Ashi, why are you teasing me when it should be the other way around? ” Yoochun asked in frustration.
This time, Jae couldn't help but laugh out loud. “Yoochun, you should see your face. It's all red like you're going to explode any minute.”

Yoochun couldn't stand his hyung anymore. “I have a date so I should go.” Yoochun said, obviously, trying to change the subject but he failed miserably when Jae continued laughing hard. “You are unbelievable. Think before coming to me for help next time” With that said, he left the kitchen once again.

The moment he stepped out, he asked himself: where was that coming from? Could his hyung get any crazier? He had no idea. He shook his nodded in disapproval. He sure didn't want to know.

'You can run, but you can't hide.' Jae thought once he calmed himself down. He then turned his attention back to the phone that was in his hand.

~~“I want to hear your voice again so we spend the night talking on the phone.”Love Is... DBSK.~~

With uncertainty eating him inside, he dialed the number as unwillingly, as if a gun was pointed at his head. Just when he placed the phone to his right ear, he heard the phone ring.

Jae was becoming impatient as the phone continued ringing. No one was picking it up. He almost gave up his hope, when suddenly, he heard a voice. And that voice brought butterflies to his stomach in instant. “Hello?”

“Hey, Han. It's JaeJoong.” Jae said. He felt kind of stupid. He seemed to lose his confidence whenever he talked to Han. When no response came right away, his heart almost sank to the ground. He just couldn't even sit still so he was on his feet walking back and forth.

Han was silent for a moment, she couldn't speak. She was lost in deep thoughts after hearing that voice, the voice that brought back the memory of yesterday's event. The unexpected call from the unexpected person shocked her. She didn't know how to react. Was it possible to pretend like nothing ever happened?

“Hi, Jae oppa. Is everything okay?”

Jae was relieved.“Everything is fine. I just... wanted to see if you got home safe last night.”

Jae's thoughtfulness was hard to resist. “That's really nice of you to check on me. Well, yes I did get home safe."

“That's good. Why do you sound tired?”

“Do I? I don't know, maybe it's because I have been sitting here for the past three hours, working on the assignment for my biology class..” She didn't mention the phone conversation with her boyfriend earlier.

“Did I interrupt you? I'm sor-”

“No, no you didn't." She said right way. "You just saved me from boredom, actually.

There was silence between them as both drifted to their own world. As Jae thought of what topic to talk about next, Han wondered how in the world Jae got her number. She didn't remember giving it to him. Would it be rude to ask, though?

“Jae oppa, I'm happy that you called and all, but do you mind if I ask you how you got my number? ”

“Oh, no, I don't mind at all.” He was surprise that she
didn't ask in the first place. “ I actually got it from Yoochun, and he said Hye gave it to him.”

“Yoochun? Hye? There is something strange about those people, don't you think?”

“You noticed it too?" Jae asked, surprised. "I thought it was just me and my theory.”

~Both laughing~

Jae just couldn't help but laugh at the image of his best friend from earlier.

“As weird as it sounds, how can it be so visible to us, and yet invisible to them?"

"I wouldn't know."

"He even said he has a date today. I wonder if it is with Hye.”

“Oh, really? If it is, then are they waiting for the wedding day to let us know or are they just giving us hint so we could find out ourselves, or maybe they'll surprise us later on?”

“Who knows... The thing is that if they were going out, I'm sure Yoochun would have told me. He has the biggest mouth ever. He couldn't keep anything from me.”

“Actually, you are right. Hye would have told me too...”

~Flashback ended~

Jae shifted his body position, now facing the window that was little above the bed. The sky with half-moon in the middle of never-ending dark appeared right in front of his eyes. The celestial regions, he knew, were far away and yet he felt as if they were close to him. It reminded him of Han's white and black dot eyes that could speak of a foreign language anytime she blinked her eyes. He chuckled at the silly thought.
Could this happiness last long? He didn't know, but he sure hoped so.
