"I told Leila to pick you up.." Tavia said without expression. "Be careful"

"Ok" Charmaine nodded as she turned around and started to walk through the doors of the hospital with her walking stick. Why had Tavia sounded so emotionless today? Since this morning, she didn't smile or frown much. Just plain and emotionless. She shrugged and cocluded her thoughts by thinking that she was stressed out for her final exams which were coming up ina few days.

Before she knew it, she arrived at Steven's room. Before she knocked, she thought a about a few things. First she had never made more friends, Leila and Tavia and a few people in the blind centre were her friends, but not very close. She never knew that she would befriend her own opthalmologist and..his friend. Charmaine blushed a little as she thought about the night she had with Steven a few nights ago and then, she knocked.

She heard footsteps, and then felt that someone opened the door for her. "Steven?" she said.

"Yeah, it's me. Come in" Steven closed the door behind him when she got in. "We'll do the usual..chekc-up and then go down, yeah?"

Charmaine nodded and walked into the room. "Where's Tavia? Or Leila?" Steven asked.

"Tavia is staying home to study for her fianl exams. And Leila can't get off her sift at the blind centre..so Tavia dropped me off and Leila will pick me up later" Charmaine explained.

With Steven's help, she sat down on the big mechanical chair and lay down so Steven could do the usual check-up. "I've got some more news about that eye operation. Do you want me to tell you?"

"If you want" Charmaine replied and opened her eyes wide as Steven bent over her with his equipment.

"Well, the opthalmologists here are unexperienced with that operation because if you do want to do this operation, you'll be the first person in Hong Kong to. So if you do want to do this operation, a opthalmologist from the US will be coming over in about 2 weeks. Now he will come even if you're not going to do the operation 'cause other patients have already agreed" Steven explained.

"Oh.."Charmaine sounded uncertain. "I want to do it....but the previous times, the operation was unsuccessful and e had watsed a lot of money from it. That's why Tavia had to start getting a job, because we had used up the money her parents sent to her on the last three operations"

"I don't guarantee that it will be successful, but if you have money matters, you can pay with a rule, like an amount each month, or every three months or something similar" Steven replied.

"What do you think?" Charmaine asked.

"As an opthalmologist, I'd encourage you to do the operation because the two people that tried it in the US was successful but had to wait a year until they can see again" Steven said. "Everything takes time, remember"

"I know..but it is quite expensive. I talked to Tavia before, she said maybe if she graudates with an opthalmology degree, she can earn some money and then I can do it" Charmaine said. "But I think you're going to say that's a bit late, right?"

"You can practically read my mind" Steven smiled as he stood up again. "I finished checking your eye. All is well, no harm at the moment. So, you've got three days to think about the operation"

"Three days?" Charmaine sounded surprised.

"I'm sorry, but I was given orders. The US doctor will need to know the patients condition and reason etc, plus the operation is not far away so the deadline isn't that bad" Steven said.

"Do we just say 'yes' I'm doing it and you'll tell him?" Charmaine asked.

"No, you fill in a form and then we send all the forms from this hospital to the US an d he can study your condition first" Steven replied. "Do you want a form incase?"

"Yes" Charmaine said.

"Ok, let's get a form for you..and then we'll go down"Steven smiled at her, even though she couldn't see him. He felt like smiling anyway.

He helped her down from the mechanical chair and out of the room. "Steven..."she began.

"Hmm?" he said, opening the filing cabinets.

"Thank you" she said.

"Why?" he smiled as he pulled out a form.

"Just..thank you" she said.

---

Tavia scrunched the text filled paper and threw it behind her. She had been trying to revising the basic parts of the eye and the function and importance of it for the past hour, but couldn't get it into her head.

"What am I doing...."she muttered. "This work has been set out for year 11 and 12 students and I'm just revising here and I can't even get it into my brain"

She opened up a new page of lines and started to draw a picture of an eye. She drew lines from some parts of it and labeled them. But she really couldn't get itinto her head. What popped up in her head, was Ron. She hit her head and then scribled over the drawing of the eye. There was silence in the whole house. Nothing could be heard properly. Not even a clock ticking. Then suddenly, Tavia's moblie ringtone broke the silence. She grunted then reached for her bag which lay on her bed. She took it out and accpeted the call. "Hello?" she said rudely.

"Is Ms. Tavia Yeung there please?" a middle aged man's voice could be heard.

"I..I am" she replied, stammering. "Who's speaking?"

"This is Mr. Ma" Mr. Ma said. "I'm Steven's father, remmeber me?"

"What...?" Tavia thought in her mind. "Did he call the wrong number? no, because he was finding me, Tavia Yeung" she thought. "I do remember you, Mr. Ma" she said aloud. "How can I help you?"

"I know you think this might sound weird, but I'm at the crystal cafe a few streets away from your apartment block now. Would you like you way over?" he asked.

"Why?" Tavia asked, sounding ucnertain.

"Look in your wallet and I think you'll realise why" Mr. Ma concluded and hung up.

"Mr. Ma, what do you mean in my wallet-" she cut herself short as she remembered there was a picture of a middle aged man in her wallet that was supposedly meant to be her father. "Oh lord.."she slapped her forehead as she packed her books up.

---

She pulled open the glass door of crystal cafe as she held her wallet tightly. She walked in and looked around. Her eyes circled the cafe until she spotted the back of a business man's back. There was a younger looking back standing beside the one sitting down, and another sitting next to the middle aged man in causal clothing, but she didn't see his face clearly because the man standing up has covered his face. But as neared that table, she recognised the man in casual clothing. "Steven...?" she looked confused.

"This must be very confusing for you, Tavia" Mr. Ma spoke up. "Sit down"

Tavia glanced at Steven, then the man standing up and then Mr. Ma again. Steven nodded. "Really, sit"

Tavia pulled the chair out and sat in it. "Um.."she began.

"Did you look in your wallet?" Mr. Ma asked.

Tavia nodded and opened her wallet. She turned it around and showed Mr. Ma. "Are you talking about this man?"

He nodded. "Do you know who he is?"

Tavia glanced at Steven and then looked at the picture. "My mother told me it was my..father" she said slowly.

"Steven, show her" Mr. Ma glanced at Steven.

Steven took something out from his pocket. It was the photo that Tavia was questioning about the other day. It had a ripped egde and was of a middle aged woman. Steven reached voer and took Tavia's picture and put the together. He stared at it first, himself and then turned it around to show Tavia. Tavia's eyes widened and imemdiately looked at Mr. Ma.

"Do you know who that woman is..?" Mr. Ma questioned.

"My...mother..."she stammered.

"And did she ever tell you that she was married to another person?" Mr. Ma put his finger on the photo of the man.

"His name was...Alan..Ma?" Tavia frowned. "Wait..isn't that you?"

"Excatly" Mr. Ma nodded. "Did you change your name to..Tavia from Tavyna?"

"Y-yes.."she mumled, but loud enough for them to hear.

"So..can you come to a conclusion?" Mr. Ma asked.

"You're...my father?" she looked surprised, but happy.

He nodded again. "And to make it very sure, your mother was called Tanya Yeung and you have a birth mark on your lower left arm shaped like a bow tie, right?"

Tavia pushed her sleeve up and looked at it. This was the first time in a few days that she actually smiled. A real smile. Her eyes filled with tears as Mr. Ma stood up. She stood up too and walked over to hug him. "You're...my father?" another big smile spread across her face.

Steven stood up too and looked at Tavia. "Don't forget about me.."

"Oh, Steven!" Tavia chuckled. "You're my brother!" Tears rolled down her cheeks as she elaned over and hugged Steven. "I always wished I had a brother...and now it's true!" she smiled.

"I can't believe it as well" Steven smiled as they separated. "Don't cry, silly girl"

Tavia wiped her tears away and smiled at them.
