The next day, Tavia had her uni classes during the evening so she could drive Charmaine to their local hospital for their weekly check-up.
"Tavia! Breakfast is ready!" Charmaine called from the kitchen. Slowly she brought over two bowls of warm chickeen congee.
"Coming!" Tavia's voice was heard.
Charmaine was used the apartment now, she knew her way so she didn't have to feel for anything or walk with her wlaking stick. It is a responsiblity to become independant if you're bind, so Charmaine placed the two bowls infront of two random chairs on the dining area. "Tavia?"
She slowly pulled out a chair and sat on it. The sounds of Tavia's footsteps were heard as Charmaine picked up her spoon. "Morning" Tavia greeted Charmaine.
"Good morning" Charmaine said, tasting her own congee.
"Ooh..congee, that's why I say I like your breakfats days more. I stick with cereal and milk all the time" Tavia giggled a bit and sat down across Charmaine.
"Remember we're going to check-up today?" Charmaine asked, titlting her head, as if looking at Tavia.
"of course I remember" Tavia smiled even though she knew that Charmaine would not see it. "Did I tell you that I got a phone call last night..and they told us that there's a new doctor"
"You didn't tell me"Charmaine replied, twirling her spoon around. "What happened to Doctor Chu?"
"The nurse said that he retired" Tavia responded. "But there's a new opthalmologist, he's not a fresh graduate don't worry"
"How do you know?" Charmaine asked.
"Oh, I had like a two minute chat with him..and he said so" she said. "And he sounded young"
"Ok...I hope he isn't clumsy or something" Charmaine said. "Because I'd like to be carefully looked after"
"I hope so too" Tavia replied, finishing the congee.
---
Travelling up the lifts towards Level 15, Charmaine thought of how the new opthalmologist was going to be, and how he was going to check her up. "The lift door opened" tavia told her.
Charmaine followed Tavia out and walked with her until she stopped. "I know it's this door too, I counted the steps" Charmaine said.
"Same door, but the name plate has changed.."Tavia said. "Dr. Steven Ma" she mumbled. Tavia raised a hand and knocked on the door.
"Come in" a young male voice was heard.
Tavia twisted the door knob and pushed open the door. She was surprised to see such a young man still in his twenties, typing on his computer. "Hello, is Dr. Steven Ma here?"
Charmaine felt the presence of someone sitting there although she couldn't see.
"Yes, I am Dr. Steven Ma" Steven looked up from his computer. He glanced at Tavia and then at Charmaine. "The girl who's grocery bags I knocked over..?" he thought.
"Oh, greetings" Tavia smiled and outstretched her hand. "I'm Tavia Yeung, Charmaine Sheh's friend"
Steven shook her hand and then glanced at Charmaine. "Hi Charmaine"
Charmaine nodded and smiled. But the voice was very familiar. "Have we met before?"
Steven raised his eyebrows. "Actually yes"
"You have..how do you know?" Tavia turned to look at her.
"Have a seat first, please" Steven gestured at the seats across him.
Charmaine and Tavia sat down. "Where have we met..?" Charmaine asked.
"My apologies" Steven apologized. "The other day I was at the restaurant...and I knocked over your grocery bags but I didn't pick them up. I was heading towards the restrooms so you know..and I didn't know you couldn't see. Sorry"
"Oh, that's ok" Charmaine smiled again. "I have forgetton about that a long time ago"
Somehow, Charmaine's smile was captured into Steven's mind. "Haven't seen such an optimistic patient before" he thought. Then he said aloud, "How about you tell me about your history so I know a bit about you..and then we do a check-up?"
"Ok" Charmaine agreed. "Well, when I was 16, I was involved in a car accident..so I became blind after poor treatment. I live with Tavia now because I was sent to a disability orphanage and Tavia's parents adopted me, but not only because of that, but I went to the Blind Community Centre and Tavia was studying opthalmology so I actually met her there"
"Oh, interesting" Steven commented. "You look very young, and studying opthalmology? Is it your interest?" he asked Tavia.
"Well yes, but after I met Charmaine it was my goal" Tavia smiled.
"Ok, we shall do a check-up now" Steven stood up. "Tavia, would you like to lead Charmaine in"
"I'm independant now..and I've been to these check-ups a million times" Charmaine paused. "So I know where everything is"
"Oh, I'm impressed" Steven chuckled. "Ok, if you insist"
---
After doing a normal check-up, Steven explained the same things Dr.Chu would explain, meaning that even though Steven was young, he had the same explanaitions of a 60 year old. "I'm guessing that last week when you came to check-up, you had the same explanaition right?"
Charmaine nodded. "Yes"
"That's because your vision didn't improve or worsen" Steven said. "So that's meant to be good"
"I understand" Charmaine said.
Tavia glanced at her watch. "Charmaine, I've got to meet someone now, I'll come back and pick you up in about..one hour? Is that ok with you, Dr.Ma?"
"Oh that's fine" he nodded. "And please call me Steven"
"Ok, Steven" Tavia stood up. "See you in an hour Charm"
"Bye Tavia" Charmaine slightly turned her head as if to see her off. She turned her head back to face Steven. "What are we going to do now?"
"You'll see" he replied.
They left the room and travelled down 15 levels to the gardens behind the hospital. "Where are we going?" Charmaine asked, feeling a bit insecure.
"The lift door is opening" Steven stepped out as Charmaine followed. "We're going to the gardens"
"Oh"Charmaine said, feeling a bit safer now.
As soon as they stepped out of the building, Charmaine could tell. The air smelt fresh and her hair was fluttering. "See, we're in the gardens"
Charmaine smiled and followed him. They walked a short distance and then Charmaine lost sense of him. "Dr.Ma?"
"I'm here" Steven's voice was heard.
Charmaine followed the voice and nearly bumped into him. "Sorry"
"That was just a little test to see how you're doing" Steven explained. "Sit"
"Sit?" Charmaine asked. "Is this...grass?"
"Yes, I'm sitting now" Steven sat down on the grass. Charmaine could hear Steven sitting down.
"Weird.."she thought as she carfeully sat down beside him. "and then?"
"Relax" Steven responded. "Smell the air, listen to the sounds"
Charmaine obeyed him and smelt the air, listened to the sounds.
"What do you smell? What do you hear?" he asked.
"I hear..you" Charmaine replied. "And the breeze whooshing past, children laughing and birds chripring. I smell..fresh roses..and rainy weather"
"Oh, you can tell if it has been raining?" Steven asked.
"Yes, I've been blind for quite a while already" Charmaine nodded.
"Ok, hold this" Steven placed a sketching pad in her hands.
"What's this?" she felt the sketching pad. "A sketching pad?"
"Yes" Steven answered. "And here's some coloured pencils.." Steven handed a blue, red, green and yellow coloured pencils to her.
Charmaine smiled, as she was good at art. "What do I do with them?"
"Draw what you hear...and smell" Steven instructed.
Charmaine liked this teaching method. He must've of known that she liked art. "Ok" she said. She took a red pencil and drew roses, and then a blue to draw clouds and a few drops of rain, then a green to draw grass, and a combination of colours to draw children...herself and Steven.
Steven watched ad she drew on the objects and figues quickly. It wa slike she knew how to draw from the first day of her life, hence that she was blind. "Wow..."Steven said. "That's really pretty"
"Thanks" Charmaine turned her head to him and smiled.
Steven nodded. "How do you draw so well..when you're blind?"
"I don't know really" Charmaine shrugged. "I had no inspiration to paint again when I was first blind but I met an assistant in the blind centre who gradually taught me again"
"Oh, that's really interesting" he complimented. "You said painting before...do you paint more than draw?"
Charmaine nodded. "Yep. I love painting, I used to get full marks all the time, drawing is ok too"
"Wow, you're so talented" Steven said.
Charmaine nodded and touched the sketching pad. Steven watched as she happily touched it. They talked and drew a bit more, and realising it was an hour already, Steven lead her back to the main floor and waited with her for Tavia to arrive.
Tavia was 5 minutes late, driving up the driveway. "Charmaine, I'm here"
Charmaine turned her head to Steven, who was standing beside her on her right. "Thanks for today" she smiled and walked down the steps.
"Thanks Steven!" Tavia waved as she helped Charmaine get into the car.
---
"Hey..you know Steven looks really young?" Tavia said as they drove home.
"I know, I can tell by his voice" Charmaine replied. "What..are you interested in him?"
"Of course not" Tavia raised an eyebrow. "I wa sjust telling you, to give you some background information. And a little note, he's real handsome too"
"Handsome?" Charmaine laughed softly. "If you think he's handsome..doesn't that meean you-"
"No" Tavia replied calmly. "We can think..doesn't mean we do like them"
"Ok, I was kidding" Charmaine giggled.

In case you're wondering, heres a defination for opthalmologist: An ophthalmologist is a physician who specializes in the medical and surgical care of the eyes and visual system and in the prevention of eye disease and injury. They provide a full spectrum of care including routine eye exams, diagnosis and medical treatment of eye disorders and diseases, prescriptions for eyeglasses, surgery, and management of eye problems that are caused by systemic illnesses.
