Chapter 10

Raymond walked into the living the next morning and to his surprised his wine cabinet was no longer empty.

“I hope those are the wine…” Myolie said from behind. Raymond stared into the cabinet.

“Wow, they’re better than the ones I had before…1882…1976…Where did you get it?” Raymond exclaimed.

“I found it!” Myolie told him. She could tell him that she ‘made’ them, it would freak him out.

Raymond took a bottle of wine and stared at it. “You’re telling me you found a bottle of 1882 wine? Some one threw out a bag of wine for you to find?”

Myolie kicked herself for coming up with such as stupid answer.

“Uh…yeah??” Myolie replied.

Raymond stared at Myolie. “Don’t tell me you stole them!”

“No of course not! I found them!” Myolie insisted. Raymond gave her a who are you kidding look.

“Leila got them for me, this morning.” Myolie lied again.

“Leila?” Raymond exclaimed. Myolie nodded. “Well why didn’t you tell me earlier?”

Myolie shrugged. “Didn’t occur to me. By the way, breakfast is ready.” Myolie told him as she hurried off to the bathroom.

Raymond walked to the kitchen shaking his head. What did he get himself into?

Bosco groaned as pulling his covers over his head. What was that noise? Outside he could hear chirpings. It sounded like a bunch of songbirds. But that was impossible, how could there be a bunch of songbirds in this city. Must be the neighbors.

The chirpings grew louder until Bosco could take it anymore. Jumping out of his bed, Bosco left his room slamming the door behind him. The chirpings grew as he made his way towards the den.

When Bosco reached the den, his mouth dropped open.

There were at least over twenty bird cages hanging around his house. Each of them had at least one bird in it.

In the middle was Leila playing with a pale blue bird and whistling a sweet melodious tune, which unfortunately Bosco was too cranky to notice.

“LEILA TONG!” Bosco shouted. Leila winced and turned around. “I see you’re awake! Like my collection?” Leila asked.

“How…where did you get all of these?” Bosco asked.

“I bought some…and caught some…” Leila told Bosco.

“No! They are leaving! They are not staying!” Bosco said.

“They are staying!” Leila said firmly.

“Then they will become dinner then!” Bosco threatened.

“If you dare cook them, I will grill you alive!” Leila retorted.

Before Bosco could respond, the doorbell rang. Leila rang to get it. It turned out to be Raymond.

“Whoa, what’s all that racket?” Raymond asked stepping in. He looked more surprised at the sight of the birds.

“Come on! They’re all innocent starving creatures…” Leila whined as she tugged on Bosco’s pajamas sleeves.

Raymond held back as smile. “Yeah Dr. Wong, have some sympathy.” Raymond teased. Bosco gave his friend a death glare.

“Take them out to the balcony then.” Bosco grumbled. “If I hear any more noise in the morning, they are goners.”

“What brought you here Ray?” Bosco asked.

“Yeah, I want to thank you Leila, for helping Myolie get the wine.” Raymond said.

“Wine?” Leila asked puzzled. “O…right…yeah…wine…o that’s nothing…” Leila said not knowing was Raymond was talking about. Excusing herself, she took the bird cages out to the balcony.

“Just want to drop by to see if you’re ready to go yet.” Raymond told his friend.

“Give me a few minutes.” Bosco said, he quickly went to the bathroom to wash up and change.

“Don’t you need breakfast?” Raymond asked.

“I’ll grab something at the canteen.” Bosco said.

“Wait up!” Leila exclaimed jogging to the guys.

“No, you stay here and take care of your ‘patients’.” Bosco said holding her back. Leila pouted and made a face. “We don’t need any more trouble in the hospital.”

“I’ll see you later Leila.” Raymond said politely as he and Bosco left. Leila sighed and returned to tending her birds. She must set up a spell before the demon reaches them.

Raymond and Bosco showed Hoi Yee around. To their luck, Hoi Yee was quite a fast learner. For the first day Hoi Yee picked to follow Bosco around.

“You must be the top of your class.” Bosco said as they walked towards the emergency corridors.

Hoi Yee blushed. “Nah…just beginners luck.”

“Don’t be so modest. Well, do you feel comfortable enough around here?” Bosco asked as they entered the emergency area.

Hoi Yee nodded.

“Just to let you know, you’ll have to see a lot of gruesome stuff.”

“I’m all prepared.” Hoi Yee told Bosco. Before he could reply, the door of the emergency place burst open as two paramedics pulled a stretcher into the area.

The victim on the stretcher was bleeding heavily.

“Time to work.” Bosco told Hoi Yee as more patients were wheeled in.

Bosco led Hoi Yee into a section where a middle age man was choking on blood. His face was also cut very badly.

“What happened?” Bosco asked.

“Auto accident…” the nurse said as she set up.

“Sir…can you hear me?” Bosco asked tapping the man slightly. The man murmured.

“Bp is very low and the pulse is getting fainter and fainter.” The nurse told Bosco as he cover the man’s face with an oxygen mask.

“Get the defibrillator ready.” Bosco instructed the nurse. Hoi Yee stood aside and watched closely. Before the nurse could even set the machine, the pulse machine gave out a long straight line.

“No reponse…” the nurse said to Bosco. Reluctantly, Bosco pronounced the man dead. Grimly he walked out.
Hoi Yee waited until everyone cleared. Pulling away the mask she bent over the dead man and blew a wisp of purple smoke into his face. Suddenly the pulse machine changed turning the straight line into little dots of pulse.
