"Hurry up, Minjung! You're so freaking slow!" Teased Yoonmi.
Minjung heaved a sigh and tried to catch up with her fast walking friend.
The Cherry Blossum Festival ended about an hour ago and the two best friends were making their way home.
It was a night like any other night in Burberry.
The night birds were singing their moonlight song and the crickets hissed calming white noise.
The stars above shone with a hope of new happiness for tomorrow.
And the warm summer air embraced the two girls like a sweet goodnight kiss.
Minjung was still tailing behind Yoonmi when she stepped on something.
It creaked silently under her flip flops and made an eerie noise that broke the peace within the silence.
"Yoonmi-ah, come over here!" Minjung hollered.
Hearing the call of her friend, Yoonmi came to Minjung in the speed of light.
Together, the two girls peered at what Minjung had stepped on earlier.
They couldn't make out what it was because it was slightly dusted with dirt.
Minjung blew at the object and the dirt particles flew like scattered dandelion seeds.
Yoonmi scooted over to let the streetlight shine down at it so they could get a better view.
With careful hands, Yoonmi lifted the object and brought it to the light.
The object was actually a really old spell book, the ones that young school kids like to play.
Or perhaps the ones where single ladies use spells to attract other gentlemen.
Something like that.
Minjung scoffed at the book like it was some insect being tortured.
She took much interest in seeing bugs get squished under her shoes.
Curiosity flowed through Yoonmi as she opened the book.
Minjung didn't dare stop her friend because she was curious, too.
Yoonmi flipped to a random page in the middle of the book and turned to the page that read "Ancient Portals to Summon the Undead" in Gothic print.
Together, the girls recited...
"Mystic forces from above the skies
Obey this chant, may the undead rise"
Yoonmi and Minjung waited in the silence.
One second. Twenty seconds. Thirty.
It wasn't until a minute later that finally one of them spoke.
"Oh this stinks! This stupid spell doesn't even work!" Complained Minjung.
"That's because we forgot to draw this ancient symbol. You have to draw it to make it work, quote unquote." said Yoonmi, who reread the page.
Yoonmi found a nearby stick and began copying the image in the book on the soft mud.
A round circle followed by a star in the middle.
It didn't seem much like a magic symbol but still, Yoonmi drew it.
Again, the two girls recited the lines.
And they waited once more.
One second. Twenty seconds. Thirty.
It wasn't until a minute later when Minjung finally said something.
"I'm tired, I want to go home. It's clear that this stupid spell doesn't even work". she said.
Feeling that her friend made a point, Yoonmi got up and threw the book back where they found it.
And the two headed home.

Little did the girls know, the magic symbol started to glow a faint red a little after they left.
A gust of wind had interrupted the once quiet night and reopened the old book of spells.
The page landed back to the spells to summon the undead.
Out of no where, a small sparkle of red light shone from the now glowing symbol that laid etched to the soft mud beside the book.
The red light flew from the oak tree where the book lay to the house just 3 blocks away.
In the house, two girls lay fast asleep as the red light bounced off their forehead like a goodnight kiss.
Where the light bounced off the girl's forehead, blood trickled out what seemed like a painful gash.
Except nobody got hurt.
