Chapter 24

The Last Chance

*Alexander Building, Floor 37 Apartment D, 6:20pm*

Myolie eyed Jessica as she walked into the kitchen.

“Need help?” Jessica asked Bosco.

“Nope,” Bosco busily chopping a carrot.

Jessica thought really hard of how to tell Bosco he isn’t her type but she felt that if she said it straight it might hurt him, “I was watching a movie the other day and it had George Clooney in it. Wow, how I would like to date someone like that, his older than me so it would be more compatible,” she hinted out.

Bosco kept on chopping his carrot. Jessica looked to see if she got his hint, “So in future I’m only going to date men that are older than me I think.”

Bosco stopped his chopping hearing her say that then continued chopping the carrot, “I love George Clooney, if I was a girl I would go out with him,” Bosco laughed.

Jessica gave a loud laugh hearing Bosco say he would date George Clooney if he was a girl. Myolie watched the whole conversation between Bosco and Jessica. She really didn’t like the fact that they were always hanging around so she decided to take action.

“Jessica can I get your opinion on some stuff?” Myolie asked.

“Sure,” Jessica answered Myolie still laughing. She walked over and sat down, “What’s up?”

“I’m planning to buy the same coffee table you have here, do you think it would go with a tiled floor?” Myolie kept asking Jessica questions the whole night not leaving a chance for her to talk to Bosco.

*H&L Law Firm, 6:31pm*

Raymond sat in his office fidgeting with his phone, thinking about the words Steven said earlier that day. He closed his eyes and sat back on his chair, his phone started to ring.

Raymond looked at the caller ID and saw it was Charmaine, “Hello.”

“Ray, I can’t go to your house to have dinner tonight…” Charmaine began to say over the phone, “Steven Ma has asked me out to dinner.”

Raymond was saddened that she cancelled him for Steven, “You don’t have to worry about me, I’ll find some food to eat somewhere.”

Charmaine laughed a little, “I was going to ask if you wanted to come with me instead.”

“Sure, where are you?” he said happy again.

“I’m still at the station, he said he was going to pick me up but I think I will get there myself. We are eating at the Riverside Restaurant, see you there then.”

Raymond hung the phone up and left straight away. He entered the car park where Steven was also there. He gave Raymond a fake smile and drove off.

*Riverside Restaurant, 7:05pm*

Charmaine had just arrived and entered the restaurant. She walked over to where Steven sat.

“Hi,” he stood up and greeted her.

“Hi,” Charmaine sat down on the chair across from him.

Steven gave her a menu, “how was court today?” Charmaine asked taking the menu from him.

“It was good, nothing too exciting,” Steven lied, “How was work for you?”

“It’s going to be more tiring for the next few days,” Charmaine said calling the waiter over, “Hi, can I get two set dinners thanks.”

“Thanks,” Steven said thinking she was ordering for him.

“Sorry, this isn’t for you.”

Steven smiled at Charmaine then looked at the menu thinking, “gees she eats a lot.” He turned around to and searched in his pocket for his phone, he looked up and saw Raymond walking in there direction, “What are you doing here Raymond Lam?”

“The same reason why you’re here, to have dinner.”

Steven never expected him to actually show up, but to impress Charmaine he kept his friendly act up, “Why don’t you join us? Sorry I forgot there was some friction between you and Charmaine.”

“Its ok,” Charmaine looked at Raymond.

Raymond sat down next to Charmaine and Steven passed him a menu, “Here.”

“Thanks but I think I already have food coming.”

Steven had no idea what he was talking about; moments later a waiter came with three dishes. He put the three dishes down on the table.

“Where’s yours?” he asked Raymond.

Charmaine pushed a plate of food in front of Raymond, “This is his.”

Confusing was written all over Steven’s face having no idea what was going on, “I thought you didn’t like him Charmaine?”

“Well she does now,” Raymond answered on Charmaine’s behalf.

“I wasn’t asking you,” Steven said.

“As her boyfriend…” Raymond emphasised the word boyfriend, “… I can answer on her behalf.”

Steven never thought this would happen, his plan was now going to be ruined, “I’m glad things worked out between you two. Anyways lets eat.”

*Steven Ma’s Apartment, 9:05pm*

Steven walked into his apartment and threw his bag on the coffee table, he never calculated the fact that Raymond would stand in between Charmaine and himself.

The phone rang, “Hello.”

Ada was on the other side of the phone, “Meet me at the abandoned house now,” and hung up the phone.
----------------------------------------------------
*Abandoned House, 9:30pm*

Steven could sense something was wrong as he approached; he opened the door to the house and saw Ada sitting on a chair with her arms crossed. Three other men were standing next to her.

“Ms. Choi you wanted to see me?” Steven asked.

“Just wanted to know how things are going with you and Charmaine?” She unfolded her arms.

Steven could tell by her tone and posture that something was defiantly not right, “Things are getting along well, our relationship is progressing,” he lied.

Ada gave an evil smile and shook her head, “Really?”

One of Ada’s men walked up to Steven and took out a gun pointing it at his head.

Steven face immediately had gone pale with fright, “What’s this for?” he asked stuttering.

“Steven Ma, I thought you did psychology can’t you tell I’m not happy with you?” Ada got up from her chair and walked up to him, “You failed me. Charmaine Sheh is going out with Raymond Lam now. Since you can’t get her to be your girlfriend, which means you don’t have access to knowing what’s going on with the case, I don’t see the use of you anymore. Another thing, you lied to me. I don’t like people lying to me.” Ada sat back down on her chair, “Shoot him,” She ordered.

“Wait!” Steven shouted, he could feel his sweat streaming down his face.

“Any last few words?” Ada asked.

“I know I shouldn’t have lied to you and I’m sorry. As for Charmaine I can get her back,” Steven voice quivered.

“And how is that?” Ada asked calmly.

“All I have to do is get rid of the competition. As long as Raymond Lam is out of the picture then I can get Charmaine back,” Steven continued to say.

Ada took a sip of her drink, “And how will you do that?”

“I studied Charmaine, she abides the law very much. If she finds out Raymond Lam does something against the law, I’m sure that will be the end for them two,” Steven explained.

Ada stood up and walked in front of Steven, “Raymond Lam hasn’t done anything unlawful…”

“Not if I can help it,” Steven looked Ada in her eyes determined this plan would work.

Ada thought about it for a while, “Let him go.” Ada’s men put his gun away, “This is your last chance.”
