Chapter 49

"I'm not going to admit anything..."

*Kingswood Apartment, 6:16pm*

Raymond and Charmaine arrived home with lunch for Tavia. Charmaine put the food on the table while Raymond packed some grocery’s away. Tavia strolled out of her room with her hair all over the place, she had finished her night shift and had a nap which wasn’t much help in refreshing her energy.

“We got you something to eat,” Charmaine yelled out.

Tavia sat at the dinner table and began to eat, she got out her phone and dialled Ron’s number but no one picked up, “Is he working?” she asked herself.

Raymond finished unpacking the grocery’s the received a call, “hello?”

“This is Dr. Ma, I’m just letting you know that Dr. Ching is back from his vacation and since you’re his patient I think you should talk to him about your situation. I’ve passed your records onto him,” Dr. Ma informed Raymond, “He’s at the hospital now if you want to see him.”

“Thanks,” Raymond hung up the phone, he turned to Charmaine, “I think I might go see Dr. Ching, just want to ask him about the mistake he made about my tumour.”

“I’ll come with you,” Charmaine was about to grab her bag but Raymond stopped her.

“I’ll go myself, you have a lot of work to do. Stay home and finish that otherwise you won’t have enough time to complete it,” Raymond kissed Charmaine goodbye, “I’ll call you after I’m done.”

*Hospital, 8:12pm*

Raymond walked up stairs towards Dr. Ching’s office. He stopped in front of his door and heard him talking on the phone, he was about to knock on the door but Raymond faintly heard Dr. Ching mention his name.

Dr. Ching was on the phone, “I didn’t know that he would have an attack and be admitted to hospital when I was on my vacation...”

Sunny spoke on the other side of the phone, “Mr. Cheng doesn’t care, he gave you money and you didn’t complete you job.”

“I received the money and I lied about Raymond Lam having a tumour, this is all beyond my ethics as being a doctor.”

Raymond couldn’t believe what he was hearing, someone had paid Dr. Ching to lie. He didn’t know who would do such a thing. Raymond stood by the door and kept listening.

Sunny laughed into the phone, “What ethics? If you really had ethics of being a doctor you wouldn’t of approached Mr Cheng saying you can help. You failed your job, Mr. Cheng and I will be up there in a minute, all I can tell you is that he is not pleased.”

Dr. Ching hung up the phone and quickly opened the door to find Raymond standing in front of him.

“Who’s money did you receive?” Raymond yelled so loudly that a few nurses that were on duty her him.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about?” Dr. Ching lied.

Raymond was furious that a doctor would do such a thing, he pulled on Dr. Ching’s blouse, “Tell me why you would do that? So you know you’re not only messing with people’s lives but feelings and emotions.” Raymond raised his fist wanting to punch him but stopped.

Dr. Ching pushed Raymond away, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Raymond shook his head in disgust and walked off. Kevin and Sunny watched as Raymond walked off. They approached Dr. Ching and stepped inside his office.

Raymond walked outside the hospital and received a call from Charmaine, “Ray, are you still at the hospital?” Charmaine asked.

“I’m on my way back now, talk when we get home,” Raymond said.

*Kingswood Apartment, 10:10pm*

Raymond opened the door to the apartment. He had calmed down a little but still couldn’t think of who would pay the doctor to tell such a lie and what benefit would it have on the other person.

Charmaine walked out of their room and saw Raymond sitting on the couch, “What did Dr. Ching say about the mistake?”

Raymond turned to Charmaine, “Do you know what happened?”

“What?” Charmaine asked sitting beside him.

“I went up to the hospital and heard…” Raymond began to say but was cut off by Tavia yelling out to Charmaine.

“Yi Ga Jie!” Tavia yelled.

“What?” Charmaine yelled back.

“Can you help me for a minute?” Tavia called from her room.

Charmaine sighed, “Coming…” she got up and walked into Tavia’s room.

Raymond sat back on the couch waiting for Charmaine to return so he could tell her what happened. A while later Charmaine walked back outside, “What happened?”

Raymond opened his mouth but again Tavia yelled out to Charmaine, “Yi Ga Jie! It doesn’t work!”

Charmaine got up again and walked back into Tavia’s room. Raymond got up and walked back into his and Charmaine’s room. Since Charmaine was distracted he thought that he might just tell her tomorrow.

The morning came; Charmaine and Raymond were still sleeping but were woken up by a loud knocking on the door. Charmaine slowly opened her eyes and glanced at the clock.

“Who’s here so early in the morning,” Charmaine didn’t feel like getting up, she rolled over leaning on Raymond, “Ray, can you get the door.”

Raymond opened his eyes, also not wanting to get up, “Get Tavia to open the door.”

Again they heard constant knocking on the door. Tavia who was in her room sleeping rolled out of bed and opened the front door to see Ron and Ada standing outside.

“Ron? What are you doing here so early?” Tavia glanced at Ada; she’s seen Ada around the station a few times and knew who she was, “Madam Choi? What are you doing here?”

Raymond and Charmaine walked out of their room and saw the three of them in the living room. Ron and Ada stepped in front of Raymond. He could tell that something wasn’t right, the atmosphere and their expressions gave it away that something about happen.

Ada took out her police identification, “I’m Chief Inspector Ada Choi, you are being placed under arrest for the murder of Dr. Paul Ching.”

Ron took out his handcuffs, “Sorry Raymond,” and cuffed Raymond holding him in custody.

Raymond looked at his hands being cuffed, he had no idea what was going on, he turned to Charmaine who was in shock, she couldn’t believe what was happening.

“Take him away,” Ada instructed.

Ron held onto Raymond and led him out the door. Raymond turned back around and looked at Charmaine as he walked out the door.

Charmaine and Tavia had no idea what was going on but one thing Charmaine was sure of was that she trusted Raymond enough to know that he was innocent.

*MongKok Police Station, 10:10am*

Ron and Ada sat opposite from Raymond in the interrogation room. Raymond was still cuffed up and a little confused to what exactly was happening.

“Where were you last night from the times of 8:00pm to 9:00pm?” Ada questioned.

“I was at the hospital.”

Ada leaned forward, “And why were you at the hospital?”

“I went to see Dr. Ching,” Raymond answered honestly.

Ron sat quietly beside Ada and noted everything Raymond said. “About what?”

“Dr. Ma told me that Dr. Ching was back on vacation and because I am his patient he told me to ask him about my medical conditions. So I went to the hospital and heard him speaking on the phone about receiving money to tell a lie to me that I had a tumour,” Raymond explained.

“It is because you found out this lie that made you extremely angry at him leading you to kill him. Am I correct?” Ada asked with a hint of intimidation.

Raymond kept his ground, he wasn’t going to admit to something he didn’t do, “I didn’t do it.”

“But there were witnesses that saw you in conflict with Paul Ching as well as other evidence that proves you were the one who murdered Paul Ching.”

Raymond was extremely frustrated, “I’m not going to admit anything.”

“Fair enough,” Ada stood up and walked outside leaving Ron in the room with Raymond.

Ron felt awkward being stuck in the middle, although he wanted to believe Raymond was innocent but all the evidence points towards Raymond being the culprit.

“Ron do you believe I killed Dr. Ching?” Raymond asked.

“Sorry Raymond, I can’t answer that.”

Raymond leaned back on his chair; he couldn’t believe this was happening to him. He also didn’t know how Charmaine would be coping with the situation.
