Chapter 53

"I'm your husband, not him..."

*Kingswood Apartment, 12:06am*

Charmaine lay in bed rolling around not being able to fall asleep. All her thoughts were revolving around Raymond’s case, the more she thought about it the more she found it difficult to convince herself that everything will be alright.

Raymond who was fast asleep suddenly woke by feeling Charmaine roll over. He opened his eyes and turned his head and Charmaine with her eyes wide open. He sat up and switched the lamp on beside their bed.

Charmaine saw Raymond sit up and thought that there was something wrong with him, “Are you alright? Do you need something? Are you worried?” she asked quite nervous.

Raymond smiled, “A bit too many questions don’t you think? I think I should be asking you these questions. Why aren’t to you sleeping?”

Charmaine sat up and sighed, “I can’t sleep, I can’t help but think something is going to happen and we can’t find any witnesses to prove the you weren’t at the hospital during that time. I don’t want you to go to jail.”

Raymond put his arm around Charmaine and held her close to him, “Think positive.”

“I can’t, I want to think positive, I really do but all the thoughts in my mind just end up at the same place,” Charmaine looked up at Raymond, “I really don’t know what I will do if you do go to jail. It took us more than five years to finally be together, I don’t know how I will survive if we have to split up again.”

“How did you survive those five years we weren’t together?” Raymond asked curiously.

“I studied, I kept studying to stop thinking about you but that didn’t work. Those five years were probably the worst I’ve ever lived, not being able to see you and not knowing what you were doing, not knowing you lost your memory,” Charmaine said as she leaned on Raymond.

“That won’t happen again, any of it and that’s I promise I make to you,” Raymond held onto Charmaine tighter and although he was trying to be as optimistic as he could but deep inside of him he knew that things weren’t looking so great for him. But he couldn’t show his worries to Charmaine otherwise she would just get more stressed, “Let’s not talk about that,” Raymond sat facing Charmaine, “I’ve actually been quite curious how did we start going out?”

“Don’t you remember?” Charmaine asked forgetting Raymond only remembered very little of his past.

“I only remember when we first met and you fell on me and I was sent to hospital because my head busted open.”

Charmaine giggled a little remembering their first encounter. Raymond grabbed Charmaine’s hand and pointed it at his forehead, “You see this little scar, I’m assuming it was from that?”

Charmaine leaned forward and took a good look, “I never noticed you had a scar.”

“So are you going to tell me how we started going out?” Raymond asked again.

Charmaine raised her eyebrows remembering the situation, “Well, do you remember that time I got attacked by a few college guys and you saved me?”

Raymond vaguely had an idea to what she was talking about, “Sort of.”

“As of that day you kept pestering me, everyday you would wait for me by the uni library and even though you said you were just studying and it was only a coincident I knew you were waiting for me,” Charmaine said.

“Maybe I was just trying to study,” Raymond tried to defend himself even though he didn’t actually remember what happened.

“I know you weren’t studying, all the books you were reading weren’t even related to what you were studying.”

Raymond laughed a little, “How did you know it wasn’t what I was studying and how did you know what books I was reading if you didn’t notice me?”

“Ray…” Charmaine slapped him on the arm, “Anyway, then you just kept asking me out and even though I said no like at least a thousand times you kept asking.”

“If you said no so many times why did you end up dating me?” Raymond asked curiously.

“Because you tricked me.”

“What did I do?”

“Before graduation a whole bunch of us went out to sea and again you kept bugging me and asking me out. And again I turned you down and the next thing I know you fell into the sea and didn’t resurface so I panicked and jumped in after you,” Charmaine said, “then I dragged you back on the boat but you were still unconscious so I said I’ll go out with you if you wake up.”

Raymond laughed out loud, “Let me guess, I woke up straight away hearing that,” Raymond laughed louder thinking how funny and smart he was.

Charmaine did have a very impressed look on her face, “Not funny, do you know how scared I was?”

Raymond wrapped his hands around Charmaine and hugged her, “Well aren’t you glad I was persistent?”

Charmaine moved back and gave Raymond a look then rolled her eyes at him. Raymond kept laughing and pulled her back into his arms. The two of them chatted the whole night, which allowed them to forget about Raymond’s case for the time being.

*MongKok Police Station, 7:31am*

Ron hadn’t been back to his apartment for days now; he hadn’t taken a shower or changed his clothes. He arrived back at the police station with a stack of camera footage from the hospital car park.

Ada who pretty much lived at the police station walked out of her room with a toothbrush and cup ready to brush her teeth in the station toilets saw Ron carrying a stack of tapes, “What do you have there?”

“I followed Sunny and he dropped this,” Ron showed Ada the parking ticket, “then I went to the hospital and got camera footage of the car park from around that time.”

Ada could tell Ron was a bright officer, “Play the tapes,” she instructed.

Ron and Ada watched several tapes closes to the time on the parking ticket. Ron paused the tape as he a Mercedes Benz driving through he car park. He looked closely at the screen and saw Sunny in the drivers seat, “Madam,” he pointed to Ada.

Ada looked closely at the screen and compared the time of Sunny’s arrival with the time of Paul Ching’s death, “Even if he was there it doesn’t prove anything, we don’t even know what connection he has with Paul Ching.”

Ron kept watching the tape and paused it when he saw Sunny’s car leaving the hospital, he didn’t know why but he just had a feeling it had something to do with the death, “Madam, look at the time,” Ron pointed the screen, “I really don’t think it’s a coincident that he arrived and left at the times matching the death.”

Ron’s phone started ringing, he looked at the screen and it was Tavia, although he wanted to pick up but he was scared he would lose his train of thought. The phone kept on ringing and finally Ron rejected Tavia’s call, “Madam, I have a feeling that Sunny has something to do with the case.”

“Where is the evidence, you can’t just base it on your feeling,” Ada said to Ron.

Ron thought for a while, “Madam, I want to investigate him.”

Ada wasn’t sure why but she trusted Ron’s instinct, “You have to hurry, the trial for Raymond Lam is starting in a few days.”

*Phoenix Apartment, 10:24am*

Ron arrived home after being at the police station for a few days. He looked like a complete mess, he hadn’t changed his clothes or taken a shower or shaved.

Jessica was in the living room worried about Raymond’s case, more she was worried about her sister. She didn’t know how to help them two. She jumped up seeing Ron walk through the doors, “Did you find anything?”

Although Ron wasn’t allowed to say but Jessica could tell by the look on his face the investigation wasn’t going well, “You know I can’t say…”

“Give me a hint, just a little hint…” Jessica pleaded.

Ron knew if he didn’t give Jessica a hint she just wouldn’t give up on asking. Just as he pulled her into his room Moses walked in the apartment and saw Jessica being pulled into Ron’s room. Moses was about to go into Ron’s room to see what was happening but his phone rang.

Jessica sat on Ron’s bed while he stood in front of her, “I have a lead on something, but I need time to investigate and if my instinct is right then it may help Raymond.”

“What is it?” Jessica asked curiously.

Ron shook his head, “I can’t say…”

“Come on… you can tell me,” Jessica pleaded again, “Please… give my a name or even their initials.”

Ron gave in, “I’m only going to give you the initials,” he wrote it down on a piece of paper and handed it to Jessica, “You can’t tell anyone.”

Moses was off the phone and walked into Ron’s room. Jessica immediately hid the paper Ron gave her, Moses was very suspicious to what they were doing, “What are you guys doing?”

Jessica and Ron shook their heads, “Nothing…”

Moses found it hard to believe, he could feel himself getting slightly jealous that Jessica constantly spent too much time with Ron and how they have their little secrets. Jessica stood up and walked out of the room holding onto the paper behind her back, though she was hiding it, it was enough for Moses to see that she was hiding something.

Jessica walked back into the bedroom with Moses following, he had a suspicious look to his face, “What do you have behind your back?”

Jessica stuck the paper in her pocket, “Nothing…”

“What’s there to hide?” Moses stepped forward closer, he had a little intimidating look to his face.

“I don’t have anything,” she showed her empty hands.

“Do you realise that I’m your husband? But why is it that you and Ron have so much secrets,” Moses questioned.

Jessica had no idea what he was talking about, “Do you even know what your talking about?”

“I’m talking about you and Ron spending too much time together,” Moses yelled not being able to control his anger, “I’m your husband, not him.”

Jessica was now also feeling the heat of anger, “Moses, stop being so unreasonable.”

Ron could hear the two of them arguing and opened the door to their room.

Moses had finally release all of his thoughts that have been bottled up in him for a while to Jessica, “I’m being unreasonable? You spend more time with Ron than you do with me.”

“I can’t help it if I rather hang out with Ron since what you like to do is so boring,” Jessica blurted out.

“Since you love spending time with him so much why did you marry me? Why don’t you just marry him?” Moses also couldn’t control what he was saying.

Jessica was talking out of anger, she also couldn’t control what she was saying, “Fine! Maybe I will marry him.”

“Fine! If that’s what you want, then so be it,” Moses grabbed bag and stuffed some clothes inside, “Hope you two live a happy life together,” he said sarcastically. He pushed Ron out of the way slamming the apartment door as he left.

Jessica could hardly breathe; she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her stomach, followed by her head twirling around before she fainted on the bed.
