Charmaine limped inside the shopping centre for her first official day.
“You’re going to have a great time working here,” Jessica said pulling Charmaine along totally forgetting that Charmaine had hurt her knee.
“I’m sure I will have a great time here,” Charmaine said sarcastically and also in pain from walking too fast.
Jessica suddenly remembered, “Sorry, forgot that your leg hurts. Guess I am just too excited about you working here.”
Charmaine gave Jessica a smile, “I can tell you’re excited.”
Jessica suddenly realised that they haven’t had any breakfast yet, “I’ll get us some breakfast. Wait in my office until I go up,” Jessica said as she headed towards the food court.
Charmaine limped her way to the elevator while she looked inside her bag trying to find her mobile. She stood in front of the elevator still looking for her mobile and didn’t even notice people coming out, someone had accidentally bumped into her making her drop her bag.
Charmaine bent down and picked up her things. From the corner of her eye she saw a familiar face helping her, “It’s you…”
Kevin stood up right and handed Charmaine her things, “Starting today?”
“Yes I am and as you can see its going great so far,” Charmaine joked as they both entered the lift.
Kevin pressed the button and saw Charmaine rubbing her knee a little, “Did you hurt yourself?”
“Fell over and cut myself yesterday.”
“Why did you come in then?” Kevin asked very concerned.
Charmaine sighed, “My sister was really looking forward to me starting today so I didn’t want to disappoint her, its alright I still can walk,” Charmaine turned around facing Kevin, “I really think this job is giving me bad luck.”
Kevin smiled, “Really?”
“Well not really,” Charmaine paused a little, “Between you and me, what do you think about the boss of Tower?”
“He's alright I guess,” Kevin replied talking about himself.
“Alright, which usually means their not that great and employees are obliged to talk nicely about their boss.”
Kevin looked at Charmaine thinking how interesting she was, for someone who only met twice she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, “I don’t really know you. Aren’t you afraid I will tell someone that you’re bad mouthing the boss.”
Charmaine smiled, “Should I be scared? Would you tell anyone? Even if you did, you don’t even know my name so how can you tell.”
“You have a point there.”
The elevator door opened and Charmaine got out, “See you later.”
Kevin leaned back against the wall, once more he found Charmaine to be an interesting person.
*Tower Food Court, 8:21am*
Jessica stood in line browsing the menu to see what she could buy for breakfast. She was concentrating so hard she didn’t even realise she dropped a few notes on the ground.
“Excuse me, you dropped this,” a familiar voice said to her from behind.
Jessica turned around and in front of her was Moses, “Hey, you again. Wow something must be going on, it seems like I see you everywhere.”
Moses was shocked to see Jessica, “Yeh,” he replied handing the money back to her.
“So what are you doing here?” Jessica asked.
Moses purposely looked at his watch, “Look at the time, its getting really late. I better get going now,” and turned around leaving the line really fast.
Jessica shrugged her shoulders and turned back around and began ordering her food.
*Tower Office, 8:44am*
Jessica opened the door to her room, “Got you some stuff to eat before the big meeting.”
Charmaine helped Jessica carry the drinks to the desk, “What big meeting?” she asked while she began to eat.
“It’s a meeting where all the managers and CEO get together to discuss matters with the shopping centre and also because you’re new I have to introduce you to everyone,” Jessica explained as she sat in her chair.
“Sounds like fun,” Charmaine said sarcastically.
“Eat up, the meeting starts soon.”
*Tower Conference Room, 8:55am*
Charmaine and Jessica sat in the conference room with the other managers waiting for the CEO to arrive. Charmaine suddenly felt the need to use the bathroom, she turned and whispered to Jessica, “I need to go to the bathroom.”
Jessica sighed, “Be quick, the CEO doesn’t like people being late.”
Charmaine quickly went to the bathroom and ran back to the conference room and saw Kevin at the door, “Hey again.”
Kevin looked up, “Hey,” he looked at Charmaine who was a little puffed out, “you alright?”
“I got told to hurry up because the CEO doesn’t like people being late. Gees… such high standards, can’t even use the bathroom. Not really looking forward to this meeting. Are you here for the meeting too?” Charmaine asked.
Kevin smiled, “Better head inside so people won’t have to wait.”
Charmaine walked inside first and Kevin followed closely behind her. Everyone in the room immediately stood up. Charmaine looked around thinking how weird everyone had suddenly become.
“Morning Mr. Cheng,” the managers all greeted.
“Morning,” Kevin said back to everyone in the room.
Charmaine’s eyes bulged wide opened and turned around to Kevin who was smiling at her.
Jessica stood up and stood in between Kevin and Charmaine, “This is Kevin Cheng, CEO of Tower Shopping Centre,” she said to Charmaine who was still just standing there feeling stupid. “This is my sister as well as the new Marketing Manager…”
“Charmaine,” Kevin said finishing Jessica’s sentence off, “Nice to meet you,” he shook Charmaine’s hand, “great having you on board with us. I hear you have a lot of input to improve our shopping centre.”
Charmaine gave an awkward smile, “It’s a great opportunity to work here.”
The more Kevin kept smiling at Charmaine the more awkward and stupid Charmaine felt.
“Before we get started with detail, I also have someone to introduce, “Kevin began to say, “Moses Chan.”
Moses walked into the conference room and the first face he saw was Jessica, he paused for a moment before continuing on.
“I have asked Moses to help me out because he has specialised in many fields, mainly focusing on advertising in marketing. I thought about giving the Marketing Manager position to Moses but I decided to give Charmaine an opportunity to prove her ability,” Kevin said looking over at Charmaine smiling again.
Charmaine saw Kevin looking at her and immediately put her head down to avoid eye contact with him.
“…so from today onwards Moses will be the new Assistant General Manager working along side with Jessica.”
Moses shook his head in disbelief, he couldn’t believe that this was happening to him; the one person who he was avoiding the most is the person who he now has to work with. He held out his hand, “pleasure to work with you.”
Jessica shook his hand, “such a small world. Don’t worry we will have a great time working together.”
Moses took his hand back and gave a fake smile regretting to take this job.
“There’s not much to discuss today besides introducing these two members joining us. So everyone can get back to work,” Kevin said dismissing everyone.
Charmaine saw the opportunity to leave so she quickly slipped out the door but she wasn’t fast enough, “Can I talk to you for a minute Charmaine?” Kevin called her back.
Charmaine had a feeling he was going to call out for her, she turned around and gave an uneasy smile, “Yes Mr. Cheng?” she answered suddenly feeling quite scared of Kevin.
“Do you want to have dinner together?” Kevin asked.
Charmaine felt so relieved he asked her that, though she was afraid of Kevin but she was more afraid of what he might do if she didn’t go, “Sure.”
“Great, I’ll see you later then,” Kevin smiled then walked out of the conference room.
*Tower Marketing Department, 9:34am*
Charmaine walked into the Marketing department for the first time with Jessica, “This is your place now.” Jessica got everyone’s attention by clapping her hands, “This is Charmaine, she is the new manager of this department,” Jessica turned to Charmaine, “All yours.”
Jessica walked out leaving Charmaine standing in the middle of the marketing department with around twenty people starring at her, “Carry on with what you’re doing.”
Charmaine walked into her office and sat down, she leaned back on her chair not really knowing where to start. She sat at her desk for a while trying to find a direction of where to begin, “Newspaper…” she suddenly thought of.
Charmaine walked outside to her secretary, “um… do you know where I can get old newspapers?”
“I can get them for you, how old do you want them?” Cindy asked.
Charmaine thought about it for a while, she hadn’t been in Hong Kong for the past five years so she had little knowledge of the economy and news during that five year gap, “Last five years.”
Moments later Cindy brought up five discs, “These CD’s consist of newspapers for the last five years, one year for each disc.”
Charmaine took the discs and loaded them on her computer. Hours had pass and Charmaine was still reading, she reached for her mug and clicked to the next page of a newspaper that was released about a year ago. Charmaine’s eyes had widened as she read the headline and saw the picture on the third page, ‘Young Man Awake After Being in Coma For Four Years.”
