Gillian walked into the Cheung’s mansion. It was larger than she expected. She was never invited into Nicholas’s place before. This was the first time he asked her to come in. Well Sam asked for Nicholas.
Nicholas was lying on the couch in his bedroom listening to songs and playing video games. Sam led Gillian into the room. “Nic, Gill is here to see you.” Sam announced.
Nicholas looked up briefly from his games. “Hey Gill. Give me a minute to beat this level and we’ll go to dinner.” He said casually.
Sam smiled. He could tell Nicholas was getting more comfortable with Gillian. He was glad because Gillian had done so much for Nicholas in the last year. She did so much from helping Nicholas forget Joey to making sure he got out of every legal trouble he’s been involved with over the past year. And boy did Nicholas like to get in trouble!
“Sure no problem.” Gillian said standing at the doorway. She observed the bedroom and noticed it neatly organized. She didn’t expect him to be so clean and tidy.
“Take a seat.” Sam motioned Gillian towards the empty seat besides Nicholas.
She blushed and sat down. “Umm… Thanks.” She said awkwardly. She very much wanted to sit closely with Nicholas but didn’t think he would welcome her.
Nicholas moved slightly to allow more space for her to sit. “Here take a seat.” He said looking at her for a brief moment before he returned to his game.
“Thanks.” Gillian said again as she sat besides him. They were less than 1 foot apart and Gillian could feel butterflies in her stomach. Each time she came closer to him, she felt an intense happiness she couldn’t describe.
“Where did you run off to last night?” Nicholas asked. He was wondering since what Sam said was right. Gillian usually took every opportunity to stay by his side. He found it odd that she would run off too.
“There was an emergency at the children’s hospital, so I rushed there to take care of it.” Gillian responded.
Nicholas took his eyes away from his game. “Children’s hospital?” he asked curiously.
“Yes I volunteer at one, didn’t I tell you?” she asked innocently.
Nicholas thought about it and didn’t recall if she did or not. Just so he didn’t offend her, he nodded. “Yeah.” He said softly and returned to his game.
Sam noticed they were getting nowhere but thought Nicholas’s question might open up concern for Gillian so he decided to press further for them to get to know each other. “I’m going to get some drinks. I’ll be back.” Sam said and immediately left the room before either of them could stop him.
Gillian and Nicholas both looked up with their mouths half open as if they wanted to stop him but realized he was already out of sight. Both of them shrugged and let it go. Gillian wanted to be alone with Nicholas and he figured he wouldn’t die being alone with Gillian so there was no harm.
After another five minutes Nicholas beat the level and jumped up excitedly. “Wohooo…. I beat that motherfucker! Dam him!” he said thrilled of his victory against the game.
Gillian really didn’t know how to respond to his enthusiasm. “Umm…. Good for you.” She said anxiously.
Nicholas forced a smile with her as he thought of Joey’s reaction. He remembered how he and Joey would play video games together. They’d have a blast just jumping up and down afterwards. Sometimes they would battle each other and after a defeat, Joey would punch him which lead to them play fighting and that always lead to something more. Nicholas smiled at the memories of him and Joey.
“Nic?” Gillian called shaking him slightly. “Are you ok?” she asked.
Nicholas was taken out of his thoughts. “I’m fine.” He said. “Just thinking that’s all. Come on let get to dinner already.” He said motioning her out.
As they walked Gillian noticed some of the video game cords were wrapped up in knots. She fell over it and leaned towards Nicholas who hastily caught her. “You ok?” Nicholas asked her.
Gillian nodded holding him tightly to her. Her hear beat rapidly being in his arms. It was like a wish come true. Nicholas helped her stand up but she let her feet fall. Once again he pulled her into his arms. “I must have twisted my ankle.” Gillian pouted in an adorable tone.
Nicholas carried her into his arms and helped her onto the couch. This was the first time since Joey’s death, that he came near a woman and it was making him nervous. “I’ll call Sam to check on your foot.” He said after placing her gently onto the couch.
“Thanks.” Gillian said with a smile. She could tell he was nervous holding her and hoped it would spark some interest on his part.
Nicholas ran to the door and stopped for a moment. He was breathing a little heavier and noticed his hands were tense. Sam casually walked up to him. “How does it feel to hold such a sweet girl in your hands?” he teased.
Nicholas’s eyes widened and he shoved Sam into the wall away from his room. “You saw her fall and didn’t come to help me?” he questioned annoyed.
“I was trying to give you two an opportunity to get to know each other.” Sam said with a mischievously wink.
Nicholas rolled his eyes. “Who says we need an opportunity. We’re already friends.” He scolded Sam.
“Don’t play silly, you know Gill loves you. Why, I really don’t know but she does. Give her a chance. She’s a great girl.” Sam persuaded. “Come on, why not?”
“Maybe it’s because I’m not the good guy.” Nicholas said and turned his back as he thought of the wedding night between him and Joey.
Sam could tell what he was thinking about and placed a hand on Nicholas’s shoulders. “Don’t blame yourself. You and I know you didn’t cheat on Joey. You were drugged and taken away during the bachelor’s party. Only if we found Vicki, we could have proved it.” Sam said disappointedly. “But its all in the past now, let it go.”
“If I was able to help Joey in the law case, I could have proved she didn’t try to kill Vicki! But I can’t believe Vicki had me arrested for rape!” Nicholas yelled slamming his hands onto the wall. “If I wasn’t arrested I could have helped Joey and maybe now, she wouldn’t be -- --.” He paused not being able to admit Joey was dead. He could never say Joey and the word dead in the same sentence.
Sam patted Nicholas’s back. “Joey’s gone now and maybe you can relieve her spirit by living a good and healthy life. Start by being a good guy. Gillian helped you so much through the law suit Vicki threw at you. Show her some remuneration.” Sam advised.
Nicholas nodded as he remembered Gillian twisted her ankle. “Oh yeah, Gill’s hurt. She sprained her ankle. Help me with your chiropractic skills.” He said turning back to his room as he dragged Sam with him.
Gillian who was standing at the doorway immediately ran back to the couch and sat down. When Sam and Nicholas walked in she held onto her foot and made a sour face as if her foot was in real pain.
“Here let me take a look at it.” Sam said. “My father is a chiropractor in China so I know a thing or two about bones.” He said approaching her.
Gillian panicked thinking he would rat her out. “It’s ok. It hurts when I touch it I don’t know if I can handle the pain if you work at it.” She said nervously.
“It’s ok, I’m pretty gentle.” Sam said with a dorky grin and proceeded to reach for her ankle.
“Ahhhh…” Gillian screamed from a slight touch.
Nicholas sat behind her and held her. “I’ll be here. It’s ok.” He said to reassure her.
Gillian lost her rationality and didn’t fight back as Sam continued to bend her ankle bones. Every now and then she screamed and squint her eyes pretending to be in pain. Sam noticed her ankle bones were not twisted but didn’t bother to say anything. He figured she was trying to get closer to Nicholas and didn’t blame her.
“Ok all good again. Now you two can go to dinner.” Sam said standing back up.
Nicholas looked at him addly. “Aren’t you going too?” he asked.
“I have things to do.” Sam replied with a wink.
Gillian smiled to herself thinking she had fooled Sam about her ankle. Little did she know he knew about it but let it go. After all he wanted Nicholas to be happy and felt Gillian would be a good choice for him.
Nicholas nodded. “Are you sure you still want to go?” Nicholas asked Gillian.
She nodded rapidly. “Of course!” she exclaimed with excitement.
Sam tried to conceal his laughter but still ended up chuckling. Gillian playfully pouted. Sam tried to hold in his amusement and made a gesture for them to leave together.

Nnadia was closing her office to go home for the day. It was already 6:30pm. Upon leaving the office she saw Ekin standing outside of the door. For some reason she didn’t want to see him either. At the moment she didn’t want to see Louis or Ekin.
“How about dinner tonight?” Ekin asked her flirtatiously.
“Is that all you men care about?” Nnadia burst at him. “Flirting, drinking, sex and games!” she scolded him. She didn’t know why but that came out of her mouth.
Ekin was taken back by her sudden outburst but quickly covered up his surprise. “I assume you had a bad day and won’t take that to offense.” He said tolerantly.
“Don’t assume because you make and ASS out of U and ME!” Nnadia emphasized. “Get out of my way!” she said walking to the carport for her car.
Ekin sucked on his lower lips and made an amused frown. He shrugged his shoulders and followed her. Nnadia was almost at her car and turned around. “Stop following me.” She said calmly this time.
“I’m not following you, I’m parked here also.” Ekin said circling her. “This is a carport, who says I can’t walk to my parked car? You’re not the only one with a car in this carport.”
“So I assume you’re parked on this floor also?” Nnadia asked with her hands on her hips.
“No I’m actually on the floor above.” Ekin said as he turned around to walk the other way. Nnadia bit her lips and looked away. Ekin turned back around. “Oh and don’t assume because….” He was cut off by Nnadia.
“Oh be quiet!” she scolded him and got into her car. She never felt so silly. “Dam him.” She cursed him as she drove away. But she couldn’t help looking into her review mirror to look at where he was heading to. She saw him walked up the stairs and silently cursed herself as she continued driving home.
Upon reaching her apartment, she noticed Louis’s car parked out front. She parked her car frustratedly and wondered how he had the nerve to come see her still. She barged into the elevators and into her apartment. Louis came out in an apron holding a plate of steak garnished with steamed vegetables. “Hi honey, you’re home.” He said greeting her sweetly. He placed the food on the dinning table and tried to kiss her on the cheek.
Nnadia pulled back and looked at him unkindly. “What are you doing here?” she questioned placing her purse on the couch and her jacket on top of it with her hands crossed.
Louis pointed towards the dinning table. “I made dinner for you because I couldn’t make it here last night.” He said. “I’m sorry, don’t be mad. You’re usually more understanding.”
“I usually am but you’re usually more careful to call me and let me know you won’t come over for dinner but you didn’t last night.” She said sternly.
“I got so drunk I forgot about it. I figured Kristy would have called to let you know.” Louis said hoping to make amends with her. “Did you wait up all night?” he asked coming closer to her.
“No.” Nadia backed away from him. “I went over to your apartment.” She said sternly.
Louis nodded. “Why didn’t you wake me up?” he asked motioning her to the dinner table.
Nnadia walked over to the dinner table. “I left after seeing Kristy in your clothes.” She said standing firmly and staring him straight in the eye for any deceit.
Louis looked more shocked than she was when she saw the scene last night. “Kristy was wearing my clothes!?!?” he asked confused. “Why?”
“You really don’t know?” Nnadia asked turning her back to him.
“Ok, I don’t know what happened last night. I was really drunk but I swear to you, nothing happened between Kristy and I. The only person in my heart is you.” Louis said with one palm out in front of Nnadia’s face and his other hand on her shoulder. “I love you and only you please believe me.”
Nnadia moved from him. “I know what I saw. I saw the look in her eyes, she loves you. Even if you don’t have anything with her now, doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. Maybe you just think you love me because we’ve dated for so long.” Nnadia said walking to her front door.
“You have to believe me. I don’t think that way. I will never have any feeling other than friendship for Kristy or any other woman! I’ve dated you for so long, how could I not love you.” Louis said following her.
“Are you sure you love me?” Nnadia questioned in a harsh voice. “Are you sure you’ve never done anything that would hurt me? Can you swear you’ve never had another woman!” she yelled staring into his eyes. She knew men had desires and urges. Since they were not intimate she assumed he must have had other women.
Louis looked away. “Apparently you’re upset. I’ll let you calm down.” He said reaching for his coat. “I’ll talk to Kristy and see what really happened then I’ll call you to explain.” He said putting on his coat and leaving.
Nnadia had the door open for him already. They both knew Nnadia was quite upset about the whole situation. Louis quickly thought of looking for Kristy to find out what happened. He invested a lot of time and money into Nnadia and couldn’t afford to lose her over something so little.

Tavia looked all around the villa squealing happily as she ran back and forth. “I have never dreamt I would be able to live in a house as splendid as this! This is so cool and awesome.” She exclaimed.
Joey smiled. She was glad she could do something for her since Tavia’s been such a good friend. “Glad you like it. How about dinner now! I’m starving.” Joey said rubbing her stomach.
Tavia laughed. “Ok I’ll cook something for you since you’re letting me stay in such a luxurious villa.” She winked and ran towards the kitchen.
Joey followed her wondering about what Tavia’s landlady, Anne Heung said and decided to ask her about it. “Tavia, I was wondering, why you’re so nice to me?” Joey asked thinking it was odd to ask such a thing.
Tavia opened the fridge. There was no food in it, just juices and milk. “No food, I guess we have to order food.” She shrugged then looked at Joey. “I’m not a lesbian.” She said directly answering Joey’s indirect question.
Joey smiled embarrassedly. “I didn’t mean it like that, I just…” she was explaining but Tavia interrupted.
“It’s ok. I’m friends with everybody even the lesbian nurses at work that many straight girls stay away from so I have this reputation for being a lesbian. But I don’t care.” Tavia said with a shrug. “As long as I’m happy and the people around me, nothing matters.”
Joey looked into Tavia’s eyes. Tavia pouted and stared back at Joey. “What are you looking at?” Tavia asked.
Joey smiled. “Are you sure?” she asked suspiciously. Now that it was confirmed, Tavia wasn’t a lesbian she was wondering about her other assumption.
Tavia walked towards the den for her coat so she could go buy food or groceries. “Why do you ask?” she asked.
Joey smiled and followed her. “I notice the way you interact with Doctor Lam, I mean Raymond, is particularly strange.” Joey said in a teasing voice.
Upon hearing his name, Tavia immediately blushed. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She protested. “Ray and I are obviously nemesis. We share nothing in common and he’s a jerk. Anyways he’s also my best-friend’s boyfriend so don’t get me involved in any rumors.”
Joey nodded her head. You have nothing in common except you two like helping people, you’re both in the health care profession and you’re both stubborn and….” Joey teased as she also grabbed a coat and followed Tavia to the front door.
Tavia playfully hit Joey on the shoulders to shut her up from saying any more. “Don’t even think that way! What would Michelle think if she heard you!” she scolded her.
“And if he wasn’t Michelle’s boyfriend you two might have a chance.” Joey teased then looked serious. “Tell me the truth, do you like Raymond or not?” Joey demanded probing for the truth.
Tavia let out a deep sigh. “What’s the point? I can’t possibly compare to Michelle.” She said sadly as she exited the villa. Joey felt bad for starting the conversation and immediately followed.

Edison and Charlene were eating dinner that night at “Taste of Love”. Charlene kept looking at the time wondering if Joey would come out for food since there was no food in the fridge. She snuck out a few times to call the villa hoping Joey wouldn’t come to “Taste of Love.” But nobody picked up the phone at the villa and she started panicking.
“Why are you acting so weird?” Edison questioned as he noticed Charlene’s strange behaviors.
“Nothing, I’m just worried about the files I left in the office yesterday. Since I had a day off today I don’t know if anyone refilled them. They’re very important.” She said stabbing at her food.
“If they’re that important why don’t we go back to the office and check where they are.” Edison suggested.
“Good idea.” Charlene said. “Let’s go.” She got up to get her purse and jacket.
“But we haven’t eaten anything yet.” Edison said astonished at Charlene’s rush to leave. “Whose files are they anyways?” He asked since he knew most of his current client’s files pretty well.
Charlene had to think quickly about which case was important to him the most at the moment. “Kirkland.” Charlene blurted out without thinking of the consequences.
Edison practically spit out his food. “What is the Kirkland case doing out of the locked cabinet?” he asked worriedly. That was his most important and confidential client. The case was going through a murder trial which he couldn’t risk losing at the moment.
“I’m sorry, that’s why I’m so worried about putting it away.” Charlene said apologetically.
“Let’s go.” Edison said getting up quickly. “Why didn’t you call the office and have me pick it up this morning?” he asked. Edison found it odd that Charlene would think of anything but his well-being. She’s been concerned for him even before he met Joey and was always the one handling his most confident cases because he trusted her most.
“I wasn’t thinking straight.” Charlene apologized. “My mind was somewhere else.” She said hoping they wouldn’t bump into Joey. She felt she almost got Edison to like her so she wasn’t going to give up her chances of finding happiness just because Joey was still alive.
As they drove off, Joey and Tavia arrived at “Taste of Love.” Joey observed it and shook her head. “I don’t want to eat here.” Joey said looking at the place. She didn’t know Tavia was going to take her there.
“It’s ok.” Tavia said warmly. “I’ll treat tonight.” She said getting ready to get out of the car.
Joey held Tavia back. “This place gives me the creeps let’s go some where else.” Joey said staring at the place with the memories of last night flashing through her mind again.
“Ok.” Tavia said noticing her expression. “Continue to Phoenix Inn.” Tavia told the taxi driver then looked back at Joey. “Are you ok?”
“The owner of Taste of Love tried to abduct me last night” Joey said looking into Tavia’s eyes. Tavia could see the fright and anxiety in Joey’s eyes. Her mind seemed to tremble at the very thought.
Tavia was shocked. “Why? What happened? I should have known something was wrong last night.” she said.
Right at that moment their taxi pulled up to a stoplight next to Edison’s car. Edison looked over at the same time Joey did. They saw each other. Edison was taken into complete shock. Joey immediately looked away. The light turned green and the taxi started driving again.
“Edison?” Joey said more like a question pulling so tightly on Tavia’s shirt that Tavia wondered what was wrong. “Who? What?” Tavia asked her looking out towards the window.
“Oh no! That’s Edison! A guy from my past! What should I do?” Joey asked trying to hide away.
“What’s wrong? Don’t you want to recover your past?” Tavia asked her. “This would be a great opportunity wouldn’t it be?” Tavia looked over at the car besides them.
“Yeah but I don’t want to see him right now. I don’t know why but I think Charlene was right. I wanted him to think I was dead.” Joey said hiding into Tavia’s shoulders.
Edison immediately floored it in his sports car. He caught up with her. His eyes weren’t very fixated on the road but were on her. “I told you I saw Joey! That girl is Joey!” Edison shouted pointing to the taxi.
Charlene looked over and recognized Joey but needed to pretend she didn’t. “That girl looks nothing like Joey. You must be imagining again.” She tried to convince him. She didn’t know what she wanted to do. In a way she wanted Edison to see Joey again but in a way she didn’t.
“I’m sure of what I saw!” Edison said determined to stop the taxi. Charlene became very nervous.
Tavia looked back at Joey. “He’s staring over here and following the taxi. What should we do?” she asked.
Joey thought quickly. “You once gave me the name June. Other than Nnadia and you nobody else knows my I’m Joey. If he stops us, I’m your cousin June. We both work at the hospital. Make sure Raymond knows not to disclose that I was a patient there.” She said so quickly that her mouth felt stunned.
“Don’t worry, Ray knows not to disclose any personal information.” Tavia reassured her. “Come on June we have an act to play out.” She said determinedly. Joey nodded. She felt ashamed and guilt when her eyes met with Edison. She didn’t want to hurt him by letting him see her but didn’t really know why either. She instinctively wanted to hide from him.
Right when Charlene was planning to say something so Edison would hastily turn the wheel, the taxi stopped near a market and the girls got out. Edison stopped his car which was illegal parked and immediately ran over to them. “Joey! I knew you were still alive! I’ve been looking for you!” he said grabbing her on the shoulders.
Charlene came out of the vehicle and walked slowly over. Her heart beat rapidly. Her hands were sweaty. She could feel her breath being pulled out of her body. She was nervous about their encounter and didn’t know what else to say or do. She concluded that this was meant to be. Edison and Joey were meant to be.
Tavia pushed Edison’s grasp off Joey. “Excuse me but my couisn and I don’t know you.” She said standing firmly before Joey. Joey didn’t know why but she now felt guilty for doing this to Edison.
“Joey, it’s me Edison. Don’t you recognize me?” he asked in a pleading voice. He was relieved to finally see her again and was distressed that she didn’t acknowledge him.
“My name is June Yeung. I have no idea who you are and would really appreciate it if you didn’t bother my couisn and I.” Joey said holding onto Tavia as they entered the market. Tavia held Joey for support. She could tell Joey was feeling very faint at the thought of seeing him.
Edison ran after them and blocked their entrance. “Joey, I beg you don’t do this to me. I’m sorry for everything. I love you. Please give our love another chance.” He begged on his knees. Charlene was starting to feel emotional and couldn’t help looking away. Only if he would say these words to her, she would feel satisfied for the rest of her life and could die at that moment.
Joey couldn’t bear to see Edison on his knees. People were starting to look at them. “Please get up. I have no idea who you are or who this Joey person is.” Joey said. In actuality her words had some truth since she still had amnesia. “Don’t bother me and please don’t embarrass me in public.” She said in a pleading voice.
Edison wanted to comply with her request. “I’m sorry. I should have thought about your feelings.” Edison said reaching for his wallet.
“What are you getting!” Tavia shouted thinking it was a gun or something lethal.
“My wallet. I wanted to show you something.” He said taking their wedding picture from his wallet. “I thought it was destroyed in the fire but I found it the other day.” Edison said with tears coming out of his eyes. “I really miss Joey and you look exactly like her.” He showed her the picture with tears in his eyes.
Joey and Tavia looked at the picture then at each other. Joey felt very bad about deceiving Edison but somehow she felt she had to keep up the act. “I’m sorry about your wife’s death, but I’m not her.” Joey said.
Tavia nodded. She’s my cousin, June.” Tavia said pulling Joey into the market with her.
Edison didn’t go after them. He had something else planned. Whether this was Joey or not he was determined to get her back and have her by his side. She belonged to him and nobody else. And if she wasn’t Joey, he still had to win her over. Charlene turned back to face him. She also had tears in her eyes. She didn’t know if she could keep up this act any longer. One was her best-friend and one the love of her life. What was she supposed to do?
