Two best friends, who were better known as Lolita Chen and Jocelyn Arlington to each other and whoever knew them, were standing on a line to see their favorite boy group, Big Bang, in New York City after they finally decided to debut here. The two girls remember running around the neighborhood, cheering about this news but they were still different as night and day.

They were two people who no one expected to be such close friends. Lolita was an avid writer and reader and preferred not to speak unless spoken to but she did have her moments where she could just pour her heart out and not care about what others thought about it. Jocelyn was a chatterbox who could talk to just about anyone, whether she knew the person she spoke to or not. Lolita was Chinese and Jocelyn was English. Lolita had excelled in anything she learned while Jocelyn was only getting by. How different could these two get?

They were able to understand each other without having to exchange a word. They’ve grown to enjoy each other’s company and talk for hours. Today, they might switch roles for just one day.

Jocelyn always wished she were pretty and friendly like Lolita. Lolita always told Jocelyn that they were both equally pretty and friendly but she still didn’t believe her. Lolita told her that all that mattered was inside and if men didn’t like it, they’re getting kicked to the curb.

The men were always interested in Lolita while they looked at Jocelyn as more of a friend for them. Lolita didn’t think that but Jocelyn knew it was true. When Lolita moved into her new apartment a floor above Jocelyn’s apartment, that floor was completely empty until many people heard Lolita moved in. The men fought to get an apartment on that very floor just to be able to catch even the smallest glimpse of Lolita.

One of those many men who know lived on her floor was Christopher Markos. He was one of Lolita’s friends since she was in high school. He, like many men, has been crushing on Lolita for the longest time. Christopher was one of the only men Lolita would hang out with since she thought the other men might try messing with her without her knowing about it. Christopher wanted to do just that but he knew what kind of men she liked and thought he fit into that category better than most.

Lately, Lolita has been thinking about her neighbors. She didn’t have enough money to rent another apartment so she knew she was going to be stuck on a floor full of horny men for a very long time.

The two young women were getting closer to meeting their idols. Jocelyn couldn’t keep still from the idea of being in their presence while Lolita was keeping busy writing in her notebook that looked like it went through a few natural disasters. It had quite a few tea stains and ruffled pages but Lolita refused to use a new notebook since this notebook had so much meaning to her, even if it was just a plain black marble notebook. Half of it was her diary while the other half was full of her stories that she had translated herself into a few languages when she met people who couldn’t read English. She translated a few into Greek, Korean, Chinese, Spanish and even French in her spare time. She always wanted to travel the world so she took her time to learn a few foreign languages. The teachers who taught Lolita the languages felt that they weren’t teaching her language; they felt that she knew the language before she even stepped into the room. No one could explain why. Not even Lolita Chen herself.

Jocelyn wished she were able to learn many things so easily like Lolita. She wondered why she often found herself jealous of Lolita but could never bring herself to hate her. She knew what Lolita went through so she was going to stick there to the very end. A little jealousy couldn’t mess with Jocelyn’s head, even if it did.

“Just one more person and we can see them!” Jocelyn squealed quietly to Lolita, who was now furiously writing in Mandarin.

Lolita looked up from her work to smile at Jocelyn’s outburst of happiness. Jocelyn looked over Lolita’s shoulder and read the few words she could understand.

“I know why you know Mandarin but why the other languages?” Jocelyn asked curiously. It looked like no one knew why Lolita was so willing to master so many languages.

“I use Greek with Christopher’s mom.” It was now their turn and they walked to SeungRi first. Jocelyn handed him two of her CDs to sign while waiting for Lolita to continue, even if Jocelyn’s eyes were on the men. “I took Korean in high school since I thought it was going to be the easiest and it was. I picked up Spanish and French from the nice old ladies on your floor.”

“Eww! Why do you hang out with old people so much? You want to be old like them?” Jocelyn asked, confusing herself a little more.

“What’s wrong with hanging out with old people? They’re still human. They’re a lot wiser than us younger people.” Lolita backed herself up passively so Jocelyn couldn’t make another mean remark about old people. Lolita never understood why some people thought old people weren’t enjoyable to be around. Lolita often talked to them to learn about history and other people’s opinions.

“Thank you.” Jocelyn ignored Lolita as she thanked SeungRi and shyly slid her CDs down the table to DaeSung. Lolita had already gone back to writing as Jocelyn noticed that the guys were looking at Lolita.

‘Why does everyone always have to look at her?! What about me?’ Jocelyn thought.

Christopher was roaming around outside when he spotted Lolita’s back in a store. He then spotted Jocelyn and 5 men that he recognized as Big Bang. The only reason he knew about them was because Jocelyn was always talking about them. That was one reason why he didn’t like talking to Jocelyn. He felt that there was no substance to her words. He preferred talking to Lolita for his own reasons that he won’t dare share with Lolita herself. The man didn’t know that Jocelyn knew that he took a strong liking to Lolita. Lolita was oblivious to this fact and Christopher thought that was good for now.

He carefully sneaked past the crazy fan girls without being caught and pecked Lolita’s cheek. Big Bang’s eyes went wide at this, even YoungBae and DaeSung.

Lolita wiped Christopher’s DNA off her cheek with her shoulder and went back to writing.

“You look happier today.” Christopher commented.

“I always am.” Jocelyn answered.

“I wasn’t talking to you. I was talking to Lita.” Christopher smirked at Jocelyn, who just pushed her CDs down to TOP a.k.a. SeungHyun after DaeSung had signed.

Many people called Lolita, Lita, except for Jocelyn. She just couldn’t bring herself to say that.

“How are you today?” Christopher asked Lolita.

“Better than most days.” She answered without taking her eyes off her notebook.

“Good.” Christopher smiled, even though he knew Lolita wasn’t going to look up. He looked at her paper to see that she was now writing in Greek. Since he was Greek, he understood everything she wrote, “You write so beautifully in any language.”

“Thanks.” Lolita said sweetly, thinking about some jokes Christopher had made just yesterday. She loved how Christopher was always able to put a smile on her face. Even Jocelyn couldn’t do that.

“Why don’t you tell her how you feel?” Jocelyn hissed at Christopher, quiet enough so Lolita couldn’t hear.

“Shut up!” Christopher hissed back.

“What? You scared she’s going to turn you down?” They continued to hiss at each other as Lolita stopped writing to thank SeungHyun for signing her friend’s CD and gave him a sweet smile. SeungHyun’s smile widened from seeing such a cute woman smile.

She then passed the CD to TaeYang a.k.a. YoungBae. He looked up at her, expecting to see her friend but smiled at Lolita anyway. Lolita felt her face heat up from seeing such a kind smile. She decided to start talking, hoping her face would return to normal color.

“How do you like the states so far?” She asked. He already signed one CD when she said that.

“Pretty good.” He replied. Lolita couldn’t help but smile at his cute accent.

“Have you had anytime to explore?” YoungBae shook his head. “Have you been to Queens?” YoungBae shrugged, even though he knew what place she was talking about. “You should check it out when you have time. There’s a really nice park in Corona. Even you want to check out, ask anyone in New York City. They’ll know what you’re talking about.” YoungBae nodded about the idea of not being cramped inside for their whole time here. He wanted to explore New York City before he had to leave.

“How do you like it here?” YoungBae asked her, knowing that she was a native by the way she spoke.

“I’ve been here all my life and sometimes it can get boring. Seeing the same people and doing the same things.” She cocked her head to the side slightly to stretch her neck out a little.

“But there are so many places to go to.”

“Not when you aren’t made of money so if you have money, you can go anywhere you want. I’m just getting by now.”

“I see.” He said, wondering why she had such nice clothes. “If you’re just getting by, why do you look so stylish?”

“It’s a long story.”

“I’m willing to listen.” YoungBae smiled up at her, never feeling so curious before.

“Well, in the apartment floor I live on, everyone else, except for myself, are men.” YoungBae wondered even more but decided to listen to the rest of the story before making assumptions. “Don’t think I moved in just because there are men there. When I moved in, no one else was there except for me. When people found out that I was living there, everyone came flooding in. I still don’t know why. So the men are trying to win my heart by doing the craziest things and one thing they like to do is buy me clothes since they all seem to know what I’m going through.” YoungBae nodded, understanding more about this woman than he thought he would.

“But isn’t he your boyfriend?” YoungBae pointed at Christopher, who was still fighting with Jocelyn.

Lolita looked at the person he pointed at and laughed. “Christopher? He’s my friend but I’m friendlier with his mom than him. He’s been acting really weird lately. I hope he’s okay.” YoungBae really couldn’t stop himself from smiling. He admired how she cared about other people. He wondered if she cared about others more than herself.

“I see. What do you write in there?” He said, pointing at her notebook.

“Just some stories. I doubt you’ll be interested in them.”

“And what if I am?” He raised an eyebrow to her playfully. She giggled softly. Her giggling was music to his ears.

“Are you sure you want to see one? They aren’t that good.”

“If you don’t think they’re good, why do you enjoy writing so much?”

“Because I’m trying to improve.”

“Can I still see some of them?”

“Okay.” She flipped through her notebook to one of her best stories that she had translated into Korean and handed it to YoungBae.

“You know Korean?” Lolita nodded. YoungBae began to read, enjoying the story until the very end. “Wow.”

“Is that a good or bad thing?” Lolita asked.

“A good thing. That was very beautiful to read.” YoungBae never imagined himself say words like that. He started to flip through and noticed so many different languages scattered around the pages. “You wrote all of this?” He asked in utter disbelief that one person could know so much.

“Yes, I did.” She slowly pulled the book out of his hands when he reached her diary section of the notebook. “Sorry. I don’t want to be wasting your time. There are other people that want to see you.” She was about to walk down the table but YoungBae grabbed her wrist.

“You’re not wasting my time. We can talk some more.” He said calmly.

‘Why is he still holding on to me? He’s probably like every other man after me. Even if this man is famous, it makes him no different.’ Lolita thought. ‘Maybe he is different. Just look at how cute he is.’

“I never learned your name.” He asked steadily, not wanting to let go of her wrist but had to when he saw the look on her face.

“Lolita.” She answered.

“Nice name. It reminds me of Lolita fashion.”

“That was why my father named me that. He was in Japan when I was born so, yeah…” Her thoughts began to drift off and she did not want to continue to speak.

“You look a little Japanese. Are you?”

“I’m Chinese.”

“Sorry.”

“It’s okay. A lot of people think I’m Japanese so I’m used to it.”

‘Why the hell are you so interested in me?’ Lolita wanted to ask him but did not want to give off a rude vibe.

“You look exotic for a Chinese woman.”

“Yeah.” She got a new idea for a short story so she opened her notebook and jotted it down. YoungBae didn’t feel this as her being rude. He just wondered what idea she was writing down. He even wondered what language she decided to write in. By the way she wrote he was pretty sure she was fluent in all the languages she wrote in even if he didn’t understand most of it.

YoungBae began to hear some upbeat music coming from her pocket but she didn’t seem to notice.

“Lolita, your phone is ringing.” He notified her. She quickly placed her phone on her notebook and put it on speaker before answering it.

“What the hell do you want from me now?” Lolita asked coldly. YoungBae wondered where that sweet woman he was talking to went.

“Just called to see how my daughter is.” A voice that YoungBae assumed was Lolita’s mother answered.

“Why the hell do you care? You kicked me out because I told you I was bisexual.” YoungBae was unfazed by this bit of information. He just wanted to know more.

“Well, I’m sorry.”

“You’re 8 years too late. How am I supposed to forgive you? Normal parents don’t kick their kids out when they’re 15 years old.” YoungBae started to feel sorry for her as her friends took their immature fight outside. YoungBae started to calculate her age and figured out that she was 23. That made her 3 years younger than he was.

“I’m letting you move back in with me.” Lolita thought she was lying. She was pretty sure she was after she heard this.

“I’m too old to be living with my mom when I have my own home.”

“But I know you’re not doing so well.”

“Why do you care?”

“I’m your mother.”

“Quit lying to me and quit calling me!”

“Dear, calm down.”

“Stop lying to me! Stop calling me! Please…please…” A few of Lolita’s tears fell onto her paper where she was about to write but her fingers were shaking to much to write anything legible.

“I won’t call you again. If you want to come back, you’re always welcomed.”

“No, I’m not!” Other fan girls were wondering why there weren’t any guards taking away the crying woman standing in front of YoungBae. The only reason was because YoungBae didn’t want her to leave and Lolita was so shaken that she couldn’t move from her spot.

“Quit acting like you’re insane.”

“I admit! I’m insane! I don’t care anymore! I’m insane! All because of you!” Lolita hung up the phone as tears poured from her eyes. “What did I do to deserve this? Why me?” Everyone watched as she muttered and cried. No one laughed, no one got near her, not even the security guards.

YoungBae rose up from his seat and walked around the table. He couldn’t stop his legs until he reached Lolita’s side and wrapped an arm around her shoulders before she could fall. YoungBae’s friends thought there would be a whole bunch of crazy girls attacking them two but they were wrong. Everyone started awing at how cute and sweet YoungBae was. No one was jealous. Not even Jocelyn.

“Shh. You aren’t insane.” He said comfortingly into her ear.

“Yes, I am! How would you know if I’m not? You barely know me!”

“I know you more than you’ll ever know.”

“No, you don’t.”

“Yes, I do. I know you from reading your stories.”

“Right~” She said sarcastically.

“I do.”

“Then what do you know about me?”

“I know you’re not insane. You’re just a sweet woman that wants to travel the world and write stories. You didn’t come here just to scream over us. You came to see if you could talk to someone like we just did a few minutes ago.”

“You really do know.” She still couldn’t look up at him. Her face began to turn red like a tomato when she realized how many people had heard her.

“I think your friends just left to fight somewhere else so you can stay with us for the rest of the day or until you want to go home.”

“Really?” She asked in disbelief.

“Of course.” YoungBae and Lolita watched as they placed another chair between YoungBae and JiYong’s chairs. “This will be your day to shine; I can promise you that.”

“Okay.” She went around the table with YoungBae behind her and sat down on the chair. YoungBae sat down next to her as another girl came over to get her CD signed. The girl handed Lolita a small pack of tissues. “Thank you.” Lolita blew her nose a few times and wiped her tears away as YoungBae secretly patted her knee under the table. It made her sit up straight and look at him as the swelling of her eyes began to subside. “What?”

“You’re still not insane.” He leaned over and kissed her cheek with his tender lips, the way Christopher had earlier. Only this time, she didn’t wipe his DNA off.
