The evening was growing darker, but the lights to his office were still on. A work-a-holic. I parked my car slightly to the left, letting it get tucked away behind the bushes on the side of the pavement as I eyed heavenwards at his office.
I casually looked at the dashboard clock in my car and noticed that it was already one. The lights to the highest floor were turned off.
It was his time to go.
Suddenly the phone in the car rang, distracting my thoughts, although I had expected. I let out a throaty “hello” hoping that it wouldn’t arouse any suspicions.
“I’m going downstairs, so wait for me in front of the building,” Chow Ka Kit instructed as he headed towards the elevator.
“Yes, Sir.”
I checked the barrel again and noted to put in the silencer. Everything was set as I pulled the gloves, feeling the tightness and tension they created on my hands. As Chow’s silhouette was cast against the dimly lit pavement, I got out of the car and walked up to the entrance.
With the hat covering half of my face, his feet were the only thing in view as they descended and finally walking up to me. Raising my face to let him deliberately see me, I stretched my right arm with the gun pointing straight, aiming for his forehead. He deserved to see the face of the man who was about to end his life.
His face registered in the confusion then shock and fear set in before the bullet penetrated his skull at the close impact. Blood surged out the exit wound behind his skull. His eyes bulging, Chow Ka Kit collapsed backward as blood seeped through his black hair and clung onto the pavement. I kneeled next to his lifeless body, reached out my hand and ran it down his face, closing his eyes in the process.
I did the last thing I could for him, let him rest in peace.
“It’s done,” I said simply into the cell phone as I walked to the nearest dumpster and threw away all the incriminating evidences, gloves, hat, outer layer of clothes, and the gun. I never used a gun more than once.
“Good,” The handler nodded. “Enjoy your vacation.”
“I will if you stay out of my face for the next month,” I replied, my words dripping with sarcasm.
He let out a scoff and hung up. A few words of mockery and he was already flared up. I smirked as I closed the cell phone, putting it in my right pocket. I walked down the abandoned street, not a sign of life was in sight. I was ready for that vacation.

I knew that bastard of a handler would try to contact me during my days off, so the best thing to do was leave the country and throw away the cell phone. I went to the nearest traveler agents’ office and hoping the agent could help me pick the farthest island away from Hong Kong. Instead of simply choosing an island, the agent now sitting in front of me was rattling off like an infomercial as we sat in his tiny and cluttered office.
“Mr. Lam, if you take a combination of a trip to Hawaii and Los Angeles, you will receive a free gift basket from…” He continued his monologue as he shoved pamphlets and booklet in my face.
I loathed people who hovered over me. Claustrophobia was setting in. I abruptly stood up, startling the agent. Immediately, I pulled out my gun and pointed it at his mouth. His eyes widened a considerable amount as he shook uncontrollably in fear.
“Shut your mouth,” I told him.
He instantly placed his quivering hand over his mouth as he stared at the gun and me frightfully, his eyes pleading me to spare his life.
“All I need is a plane ticket to the farthest and most remote island,” I informed him. “Now, book me a plane ticket to that island.”
However, he did not budge.
Waving the gun in front of his face, I tapped it lightly against his cheek and said persuasively, “Go on.”
The agent swallowed a lump in his throat as he scrambled over to his computer and did as I told him to. “See? That was easy,” I said with a small smile. He was indeed lucky that I was not in the mood to see a crimson river in this tiny office.
As I turned around to leave, I left him with a little advice, “Next time, don’t talk so much.” I placed my index finger over my lips and whispered, “Silence is golden.”
