Chapter 3

Encounter

There was one point in time when I idealistically believed in the existence of God. However, that naïveté had long vanished. Now, I believed in no one but myself. Nevertheless, I still visited the church occasionally to find the peace that was sorely missing from my life.

The church was deserted and I was the only occupant inside of its echoing walls. The candles in the center at the far end of the church were the only source of light. The slight darkness of the church was inducing me to sleep, and I liked the feeling. I hadn’t had a good night of sleep for a while now. My handler was working me to the bones, and I despised him for that.

A slight movement distracted my attention. Footsteps were heard at the far corner of the church as someone walked from the confession booth. I eyed the booth for a few seconds and finally decided to make way towards it.

I hadn’t confessed for quite a while because I never felt I had the need to report my life to anyone else. I sat down comfortably inside the booth and was ready to confess my so-called sins. The tiny door from the Father’s side opened up, as if he were expecting me.

Anticipating the Father to start off, I was soundless and awaiting for him to speak. However, only silence ensued. “Father?” I asked and directed my eyes at the crisscross square and saw the feet of a person on the other side, assuming it to be the Father’s.

A hand reached for the small square that separate the booths and moved it to the side as the hand pushed an envelope through the gap, expecting me to take hold of it. I looked at it in bemusement. “What is this?” I asked warily.

“Your handler divulged your whereabouts to me,” The muffled voice informed, however I can still make out the womanly undertone. “I am here to personally hand you an assignment.”

Anger rose within my body as I narrowed my eyes at the envelope. I was to leave today on a plane, yet he still managed to pull me back with his desperate claws. “He failed to mention to you that I am currently on vacation,” I replied simply, refusing to take the envelope.

“Don’t worry, there’s no rush. You have until the 27th to complete this. I would prefer you to do it at that exact date. Your reward will be a lump some, and your handler will only receive the smallest amount,” She relayed, enticing me to accept the assignment.

Usually, clients wanted the job to be done in a swift manner. As if they wanted to dissociate themselves from the fact that they had hired me to get rid of another human being for standing in their way. It’s ironic that this woman was in no hurry to end a human life.

Nevertheless, her last sentence was what drew me into accepting this task. I let out a satisfied smirk, imagining the look on his face when he found out the dismal amount he would receive.

“I’ll think about it,” I said after a moment of silence as I grabbed the envelope. She let out a satisfied soft laugh and was up on her feet.

A shuffling movement escaped from her side. She had already made her way towards the exit of the church as I walked out from the booth just in time to catch the outline of her figure. Looking down at the envelope in hand, I let out a sigh as I slowly strode towards the church exit.

It seemed that I will never have a peaceful day in my life. My stay in paradise will definitely be shortened.

With only a small suitcase to hold a few pairs of shorts and t-shirts, I merely took the essentials with me on this trip. I stepped off the plane and instantly the intense sunlight was attacking my senses. I immediately reached for my sunglasses as I walked out of the small airport. Already I could smell the ocean breeze.

I took in a big breath of fresh air and felt the muscles in my body relaxed a considerable amount. I was finally away from the pollutant air of the city. Maybe I can finally have some shut eyes. Having the urge to stretch, I drew out my hands and let out a satisfied groan as I rolled my neck.

Realizing that there were only a limited number of cars around, I resolved that this island was minute and remote. The hotel I booked was probably only a few blocks away as I walked up to the nearest person and asked in my broken English, “Pardon, where… hotel…?”

The foreign man instructed me in his incomprehensible native language. I stared at him in puzzlement as I gestured my confusion to him. However, he continued to let out another flow of unintelligible sentences. Letting out a sigh of defeat, I thanked him and walked away, completely lost and directionless. I wandered around street, hoping that I could find the hotel myself. However, my efforts were in vain.

“Are you lost?” A voice behind me asked in English.

I turned around to the smiling face of a young woman who looked at me expectantly. I let out a sigh of relief and nodded. Her eyebrows knitted as she eyed me carefully. Then, her face broke into a big grin and asked in Cantonese, “Are you Chinese?”

For the first time, I let out a genuine and grateful smile to know that there was someone who spoke and understood my own language. “Yes, I am. And, apparently I am lost as well.”

She walked up to me with a smile still lingering on her lips as she reached out for the piece of paper in my hand that contained the address and information of the hotel that I booked. “Actually, the hotel isn’t that far away from here. Coincidentally, this is where I’m staying, too. I can lead the way for you if you want.”

“Thank you,” I said with a grateful nod.

As we walked side by side, she turned to look at my profile and stretched out her hand. “My name is Wu Hang Yee by the way,” She grinned and added with a wink, “But you can call me Myolie, I would much prefer that.”

Reluctantly, I took her hand and obligingly introduced myself, “Lam Fung. Raymond would be of preference.”
