When I was done removing my contacts and makeup and taking a shower, I decided that I should lie back down in bed since I still wasn’t feeling well. As I walk back to my room while rubbing a towel against my wet hair, I saw my mom in the kitchen.
“Umma, why aren’t you at work?” I leaned against the wall so I could balance myself.
“I was and I’m going back really soon. I’m just checking up on you three. Was it really necessary that you guys had to come home reeking of alcohol? Thank goodness none of you threw up because I am not cleaning that up.” My mom wagged her index finger at me.
Why did I drink so much? I don’t even know, I guess it was just one of those spur of the moment thing. What did I even do last night?
“Yah, are you listening to me?” My mom’s voice stopped me from pondering.
“Huh?”
“Did you or did you not get kicked out of the club?” There was a hint of annoyance in her tone.
Did I? I can’t remember. I’ll just stick with no just to be safe.
“No, why would I get kicked out of the club?”
“Seunghyun and Jiyong came home two hours after you.”
If they came home after me then how did I get home?
“Did I come home by myself?”
“No, Youngbae brought you.”
Youngbae brought me home? How come I can’t remember? I need to think and retrace my steps. Let’s see, I remember we got to the club, Seunghyun cut everyone in line and brought us to the VIP section. Teddy pulled me to the side and showed me a butter face, who he thought was a girl but was actually a guy cross dressing as a girl. I had a drink with Teddy and he told me to dance with Youngbae and I said after another shot, but it became more than one shot. Then…Crap, that’s all I can remember.
“Seungyeon, are you listening to me?”
I broke out of my thoughts and focused my attention on my mom. All of a sudden she placed her hand on my forehead.
“My goodness, no wonder you’re not listening, you’re burning up”
I brought my hands up to my face to check my temperature and indeed my face was burning up.
“Aish, this is what happens when you go out late at night and wear a dress without bringing a jacket.” My mom walked over to our storage closet, grabbed a couple of blankets and handed it over to me. “Go back to bed and keep yourself warm, I’ll make you some porridge.” My mom turned me around and pushed me towards my room.
I slipped back into my bed and laid the blankets over me. I moved my pillow to the wall and sat upright so that I wouldn’t sleep with my wet hair and make my headache worse. After a minute of just sitting there staring at the opposite wall, I started rubbing the towel on my head to make my hair dry faster.
“Are you okay?” Jiyong’s voice came from the door.
When I moved my hair away from my face and looked up, Jiyong was already getting on my bed, situating himself next to me.
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“You had fun last night? You seem liked you enjoyed dancing with Bae Bae.”
I danced with Youngbae? When did that happened?
“If I were him I would’ve dance back though. I can’t believe he just stood there while you were grinding on him.” Jiyong shook his head in disappointment.
My eyes widen in shock. As soon as Jiyong finished his sentence I remembered wrapping my arms around Youngbae’s neck as I moved my body against him. When he removed my arms from his neck I got offended and shouted at him.
Oh my god! What the hell was I thinking? How can I just go up to Youngbae and dance like that? Oh man…he must have felt so uncomfortable and I even shouted at him for no reason.
“…Do you know what happened after that?” I asked, unsure if I really wanted to know.
“I think he took you home, I don’t remember seeing you after that.”
Maybe I passed out or something and Youngbae had to take me home early. I hope I didn’t say anything stupid.
All of a sudden there was a knock on the door, I looked up and saw Youngbae standing under the door frame.
“Youngbae is going to take care of you okay? I’m going to go back to the shop now.” My mom poked her head through the door, next to Youngbae. “Oh Jiyong, you’re up. How are you feeling?”
“Great.” Jiyong smiled at my mom.
“Good, get ready and get to work.” My mom turned around and left the house.
“Damn…” I heard Jiyong spoke under his breath.
Jiyong rolled out of my bed and left my room. Youngbae came over to me and sat on my bed.
“Are you feeling okay?” Youngbae reached out his hand to my forehead and felt my temperature.
I nodded my head. If my face wasn’t hot enough I felt get even hotter when he touched me.
“I’ll get you some porridge so you can take your medicine.” Youngbae got off my bed and went to the kitchen.
Why does Youngbae always have to act so normal? I can’t tell if I said anything I shouldn’t have.
Youngbae came back in my room holding a bowl of porridge in one hand and a glass of water and medicine in another hand. He placed the water and medicine down on the nightstand by my bed and sat back down on my bed. He scooped a spoonful of porridge and blew on it until it was cool enough for me to eat. When it was, he carefully fed me. Because I wasn’t sure how I acted the night before, all I could do was sit there, watching him pucker his lips each time he blew at the steaming hot spoonful of porridge. It was silent the whole time Youngbae feeding me with the exception of Youngbae blowing the steam off and the spoon occasionally hitting the bowl. When I finished eating, I took my pills and swallowed it with water.
“Are you okay?” Youngbae decided to break the silence and initiate a conversation.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I avoided eye contact.
“Um…about yesterday-“
Oh crap! I really did say something stupid.
“Sorry,” I cut him off before he could finish his sentence. “I wasn’t in my right mind yesterday so if I said anything weird or stupid, I didn’t mean it.”
“Oh…” Youngbae bit his bottom lip and looked down.
I wonder what I said to him.
“Well, you should try to get some more sleep. It’ll make you feel better.” He smiled when he looked back up.
I nodded and moved my pillow down. I slowly lay down and made myself comfortable.
“Oh, you got a little something there.” Youngbae reached out his hand and wiped the side of my lips. “I’ll let you get some sleep now.” Youngbae got up and left my room.
Something about Youngbae’s touch reminded me of something. That’s when it hit me. “You kissed me…Youngbae-ah…I like you.”
My eyes widen in realization.
OH MY GOD!!! I gave Youngbae a drunken confession?! How can I do that?! Great and I just said that I didn’t mean it. Now Youngbae will really think of me as a friend and nothing more.
I buried my face into my pillow to temporarily make myself feel better. Since I was still feeling fatigue, I decided I should try my best to forget about it and get some sleep. However, after tossing and turning for about two hours, my mind slowly recollected everything that had happened. Although I said what I meant and enjoyed hugging and holding hands with Youngbae, it was still embarrassing. But after realizing what I did and said, I was finally able to fall asleep.

When I woke up I was feeling much better. My headache, fever and nausea were all gone. Just when I was about to get out of my bed Youngbae came in to my room to check up on me.
“Feeling better now?” Youngbae asked as he came over to me to check to temperature again.
“Yup.”
Just then my stomach let out a loud growl. I quickly put my hand over my stomach to make it stop. Youngbae heard my stomach growling and let out a chuckle.
“Are you hungry?”
“Yeah.” I nodded my head.
“Seunghyun and I ordered some food, there’s still a lot left.”
“Okay.” I got out of bed and went to the bathroom first to clean up.
When I went to the kitchen, Youngbae was no where to be found.
“Oppa, where did Youngbae go?” I asked Seunghyun who was sitting on the sofa watching television.
“I don’t know.” Seunghyun mumbled.
That’s weird, where did he disappear to?
I walked over to the front door and saw that his shoes were gone as well.
Maybe he just went home to get something.
I walked back over to the kitchen and ate the leftover food.
“Yah, you know you basically slept for the whole day?” Seunghyun sat in the seat across from me.
“What’s your point?”
“You wasted a day.”
“So did you. I don’t see you at work.”
“At least I did something today.”
“Oh yeah? What?”
“I helped…I got dinner.”
“Wow, bravo to you.” I clapped my hands sarcastically.
Seunghyun gave a smug look and tried to take my plate of food away, but I slapped his hand away in time.
“Yah!” I moved my plate closer to me.
Just then someone knock on the door, Seunghyun slowly got up and opened it. Youngbae came back in, took off his shoes and came over to me.
“Where’d you go?” I asked.
“My place, I had to get something.”
“Ohh…” I nodded my head and continued eating.
“Remember when we used to climb on top of my roof and we would just lay there and look at the stars?”
“Uh huh.”
“You want to do that again?”
“Yeah, lets go right now.” I took my last bite and put my plate in the sink.
Before putting my shoes on, I went to my room and grabbed a sweater. When I met up with Youngbae outside of my house, he had already gone to his room to get a blanket. We walked over to a side of his house and climbed a ladder up to the roof. The ladder wasn’t always there, but after Youngbae’s parents found out that we used to climb out his window to get to the roof, they insisted that it was safer to have a ladder intact to the side of the house. When we both got up to the roof, we neatly lay the blanket and lay down next to each other.
“Brings back good memories huh?” Youngbae put his hands behind his head and turned his head towards me.
“Sure does. Remember that one time Jiyong made me cry and we came up here and attacked him with water balloons?” A smiled formed across my face as I recalled Jiyong’s reaction.
“Oh yeah and he tried to climb up here, but couldn’t cause we kept throwing water balloons at him.”
Both of us started laughing.
“We should do that again one day, just for the hell of it.” I suggested.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah, but after his parents comes back from Japan, otherwise he might try to get his revenge on me while I sleep or something.”
Youngbae let out a chuckle.
“Okay…You remember how we met?”
“Yeah, I remember our dads introducing us to each other. You were so shy when I first met you. You wouldn’t even come near me.”
“You still remember that?”
“Of course, how can I forget you running away from me every time I tried to play with you?”
“Oh man…”
I turned to him and saw him covered his eyes with one of his hands. I let out a chuckle.
“Were you that scared of me?”
“I wasn’t just scared of you. I just…thought all girls were intimidating.”
I started laughing.
“Hey the girl that lived next to me before you moved in was scary and she left me with a very bad impression on girls.”
I held my stomach and took a deep breath to control my laughter.
“But that doesn’t mean that all girls are scary.”
“I was five, I didn’t know any better and besides, I eventually started playing with you.”
“Yeah, but that’s only because there was no one else to play with.”
“And because I was getting tired of running away, boy were you persistent.” Youngbae flashed me a smile.
I playfully hit him on the arm. We continued talking for hours about our memories from the day we met to now.
“I still can’t believe you hit Jiyong that one time.”
“I don’t either, but he was just all up in my face, I guess my will power took over me.”
“I don’t blame you. Let’s just say that’s revenge for all those times he made fun of me.”
Youngbae let out a chuckle.
“Do you remember when…you said you liked me?”
My heart stopped for a second.
Why is he bringing that up? He’s not going to make fun of me is he?
All of a sudden there was a burst of light coming from Youngbae’s backyard.
“Whoa, what’s that?” I changed the subject and tried to get up to see where the light was coming from, but Youngbae held me back down.
“Uh…It’…it’s probably nothing.” There was something uneasy about his voice.
“Not yet! Turn it off!” I heard Seungri’s voice.
“How do you turn it off?” Daesung asked.
“Aish! It’s the same switch!” Seunghyun responded.
“It’s not turning off!” Daesung’s voice began to panic.
What the heck are they doing?
I got up again, but this time Youngbae didn’t have time to hold me back down. I carefully walked over to the edge and saw where the light was coming from. It was Christmas lights arranged neatly on the grass spelling out “Will you be my girlfriend?”
Is that for me?
After reading the sentence over a couple of times to make sure I wasn’t seeing things, I spotted Seungri, Daesung, Seunghyun, and Jiyong huddling together, trying to figure out how to turn the lights off. Seungri looked up and saw me looking at them.
“AH! Noona’s looking!” Seungri pointed me out.
Everyone else turned their heads and looked at me.
“Noona, turn around and pretend you didn’t see this yet!” Daesung shouted.
I gave them a confused look, turned around and saw that Youngbae was standing behind me pacing back and forth, mumbling to himself.
“Aish…I was supposed to tell you that I liked you first and then that was supposed to come on, but instead that-“
“Huh? What did you just say?”
Did I hear him right? Did he just say that he was going to tell me that he liked me?
“Huh? Uh…well I uh…I…I…” Youngbae stumbled across his words.
Suddenly the lights went off and everything became dark again.
“Pretend that didn’t happen!” I heard Jiyong shouted.
Youngbae took a deep breath, reached his hand out and held my hand.
“There’s actually something I wanted to tell you for a long time, but never got the chance to.”
Omo! Is he really going to tell me that he likes me?! Yes! We can finally be a couple!
My heart started beating faster as he held my hand, I was practically screaming for joy inside of my head.
“What is it?” I tried my best to control myself so that I wouldn’t look too excited.
Youngbae took another deep breath.
“I never told you this, but I’m really glad that you’re my neighbor and best friend.”
I gave him a smile.
“Me too, I couldn’t ask for a better friend.”
“…”Youngbae looked down and rubbed the back of his head.
…Is that it? That’s what you wanted to tell me for the longest time?
I waited for him to say something more.
“Daesung!” I heard Seungri, Seunghyun and Jiyong shout in unison.
“It’s not turning back on!” Daesung shouted back.
“AISH!” Youngbae let go of my hand and put it on his head.
Clearly Youngbae was getting frustrated.
“Youngbae-ah.” I lowered his hand to get his attention. “What are you trying to say?”
“…I don’t know if you notice or not, but…I…like you.”
A smile crept across my face.
“I was never too sure if you liked me or not, so I never said anything because I didn’t want to make our friendship weird or anything like that. But since you told me that you liked me yesterday night…I was wondering if we can take our relationship to the next level.”
Suddenly the lights came back on.
“Alright!” I heard Daesung shouted while giving someone a high five.
Youngbae smiled and turned me back around to look at the lights. Even though I already saw it, it made the moment even more special.
“Will you be my girlfriend?” Youngbae spoke next to my ear.
“Say no!” I heard Jiyong shout followed by a noise that sounded like a smack. “Ow! I’m just kidding. You don’t have to hit me.”
“Yes!” I happily turned around and gave him a hug.
Youngbae wrapped his arms around me and hugged me back. Our hug as a couple felt warmer than usual.
“Did you plan all of this?” I spoke softly in his ear.
“Yeah, but your brother helped me.”
“Seunghyun helped you?” I pulled away from Youngbae to look at his face.
“He helped me set up the lights.”
I nodded as I realized that Seunghyun really didn’t waste his day. Instead, he was kind enough to help Youngbae.
He’s getting better at being a brother.
“Yah! Are you two done cup caking yet? You still got work tomorrow.” Seunghyun spoke before entering our house.
Guess not…
“I guess we should get some sleep now.” Youngbae slid his hand into mine and led me to the ladder.
Youngbae slowly climb down and stood next to the ladder, making sure I was coming down safely. We stood in the pathway between our houses and gave each other a goodbye hug.
“You should go in now before Seunghyun comes out.” Youngbae spoke as we pulled away.
“Okay, goodnight.” I smiled and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.
When I pulled away Youngbae had a flabbergasted look on his face. I turned around and went to my front door, smiling contently to myself.
“Wait!” Youngbae shouted before I opened the door.
I turned around and saw him coming towards me.
“I forgot to give you something.”
“What?”
“This.” Youngbae leaned in and gave me a soft kiss. “Goodnight.” Youngbae slowly stepped back and waved goodbye.
I slowly got in my house and waved goodbye before closing the door. I went straight to my room and lay on my bed, still mesmerized by Youngbae’s action. Even though I know him better than anyone else, he’s still full of surprises. But knowing that he has been there all of my life, there’s not a doubt that he is the right key to my heart.
The end.
