Chapter 9

Deal with the devil

“Here’s your coffee sir.” I handed a cup a coffee to a middle aged man.

“Thank you.” He took the coffee and walked out of the shop.

Thanks to the renovation, our shop actually has a line of costumers now. It’s not super busy like other famous coffee shops, but it’s good enough to earn more profit than before. Instead of sitting around all day and pretending to work or trying to find something to do, we now work at a decent pace. Which is good enough for me considering that Jiyong doesn’t have time to bother me, but whenever there’s a time where there’s no one in line, I go in the back with my mom so that Jiyong wouldn’t dare talk to me in an obscene manner.

“Thank you.” A young woman thanked me for handing her a blueberry muffin.

“You’re welcome. Have a nice day.” I said nicely.

“No more costumers for now.” Seunghyun told my mom.

I hurriedly walked out from behind the counter to go to the back, but Jiyong blocked my way before I was able to go there.

“Trying to avoid me now?” Jiyong bit his lips.

“Gee, is it that obvious?”

*DING-DING-DING*

The bell hanging on top of the front door jingled. Youngbae and Sunghee entered together, smiling and laughing.

“Is she working here now?” Jiyong asked.

“Yup.” Seunghyun responded. “And I didn’t even have to have a talk with my mom.”

Seunghyun and Jiyong exchanged looks.

“There’s still no customer here?” Youngbae asked.

“No, we did.” Seunghyun responded.

“They just all left not too long ago.” I added.

“Oh, so the paint job really did work?” Youngbae asked.

“Yup.” My mom responded. “Oh, by the way, Sunghee is working with us now.”

Sunghee smiled and bowed to everyone.

“Oh, Youngbae, Sunghee told me that you two have finals coming up so you two can study in the shop when there aren’t a lot of people in the shop like right now. I don’t want you two to get low scores just because you’re working here.”

“Oh thank you.” Youngbae bowed.

“Should we start studying now?” Sunghee asked Youngbae.

“Yeah, sure.”

Youngbae motioned Sunghee to sit at a table. Youngbae took out his books and sat next to her.

“Are they really not dating?” Jiyong asked me.

“Yeah…”

I think. At least that’s what he said.

“It doesn’t seem that way to me. Maybe you should forget about him and move on to me.” Jiyong smirked at me.

“How man-“

“You don’t like me yeah, yeah, yeah you told me a hundred times already. How about this, I’ll hit on the new girl and distract her from Youngbae.”

“Go ahead.”

“But under one condition.”

“Forget it.”

“What? Why?”

“Because I already know what you’re going to say.”

“Try me.”

“You have to go on a date with me.” I tried my best to mimic his voice.

Jiyong brought a fist up to his mouth and chuckled.

“How’d you know?”

“You’re too predictable.”

“Alright then, I bet you don’t know where I want to take you for our date.”

“I don’t want to know.”

All of a sudden Youngbae and Sunghee burst out laughing.

“You sure you want to pass up on my offer? It doesn’t seem like they’re studying hard.” Jiyong gave me a mischievous look.

Seeing Sunghee and Youngbae laughing made me feel uncomfortable. Is there something Youngbae isn’t telling me? Can’t be right? He tells me everything, unless he knows that I like him and he doesn’t want me to feel bad so he’s secretly dating her?

Sunghee and Youngbae let out another burst of laughter, only this time Sunghee stroke Youngbae’s arm.

Should I really take Jiyong’s offer? It sounds real good right now. No, if I was really his friend I should be happy for him and not try to butt into his relationships. What the hell am I saying? Youngbae’s mine!

“If I go on a date with you, you have to stop bothering me as well.”

“Sure, but if you talk to me, I’m not going to stop talking to you.”

“I doubt I’m going to talk to you.” I sneered at him.

“Ouu…sexy, me likely.” Jiyong bit his lips and winked at me.

“By the way, on our date you can not talk to me like that, touch me, and for sure kiss me.”

“Dang woman, do you always have so many rules for dates? No wonder no one ever asks you out. Sheesh.” Jiyong turned around, shook his head and walked to the back.

“Yay!” I followed him to yell at him.

“Oh.” Jiyong abruptly stopped walking and turned around, making me stop about an inch away from him. “Be ready by six.”

“What?”

“I’m going to set up for our date now, so be ready by six.”

“Who says you can leave now?”

“Your mom, watch this.” Jiyong went into the kitchen to find my mom. “Mrs. Han, can I talk to you for a second?”

I peaked through the door to see what he was doing.

“What is it Jiyong?”

“I asked Seungyeon on a date and she agreed to go with me, so I was wondering is it okay if I leave now to set up for it?”

“Omo!” My mom squealed. “Of course you can! Oh Jiyong, I knew she liked you.”

“You had that feeling too huh?”

Oh god…I’m not going to listen to this anymore.

Right when I turned around I accidentally knocked in to someone and made that person drop two cardboard boxes.

“Oh, I’m so sorry.” I bowed immediately.

When I stood up straight I realized I had bump into Teddy…again.

“Here, l-let me help you.” I picked up a box and held on to it.

“Butthead what are you doing?” Seunghyun voice came from behind two stacked cardboard boxes. “Are you blocking the way again?”

I ignored Seunghyun and brought the box into the back room. Teddy picked up the other box and brought it in as well.

“D-do you need any more help?” I asked Teddy while trying to keep my cool.

“Yah, take this top box off.” Seunghyun demanded.

Instead of arguing back I did as I was told. I have to give a good impression to Teddy you know?

“No, we can handle it. Thanks for offering to help though.” Teddy smiled at me.

AAHHH!!!! His smile! It’s to die for!

“Go work at the cashier, nobody’s there right now.” Seunghyun ordered.

I slowly walked out from the back and went to the casher register. Sunghee and Youngbae were still studying.

*DING-DING-DING*

“Hey noona!” Daesung and Seungri said in unison.

“Hey.” I said nonchalantly.

*DING-DING-DING*

Teddy and Seunghyun went to the truck to get the rest of the boxes. Daesung saw Sunghee and Youngbae and rushed over to me.

“Noona, why aren’t you stopping them?” Daesung said loud enough for me to hear.

“Stop them from what? They’re studying.”

“But they’re not even looking at their books.” Daesung glanced over to them.

I looked over to them and saw that they really were just talking.

“Noona, you need to pull him away from her before it’s too late!”

“Huh? Daesung what are you talking about?”

“You like hyung don’t you?”

“W-who told you that? I-I don’t like him.” I lied.

“Doraemon told me.” Daesung lifted his cell phone revealing hundreds of his Doraemon keychains.

WHAT?

“Okay this is ridiculous, why aren’t you at school? And where did Seungri go?” I looked around the shop to see where he was.

“He’s making us food.” Daesung said.

*DING-DING-DING*

The bell rang again as Seunghyun and Teddy came back in. I went over to the door and propped it open so that the bell could stop annoying me.

“Here you go noona.” Seungri handed me a sandwich on a plate.

“Oh thanks.”

Cool, I didn’t even have to ask him to make it for me.

“No problem, see you after school. Bye.” Seungri handed Daesung a wrapped sandwich and left the shop.

“Bye noona.” Daesung waved good bye and left the shop.

I picked up the sandwich and was just about eat it when Jiyong snatched it out of my hands and took a bite of it.

“Hey!” I shouted.

Sunghee and Youngbae turned around too see what was going on.

“Thanks for the sandwich baby.” He took another bite.

I was about to yell at him, but a customer walked in the shop.

“See you later.” Jiyong winked and left the shop.

*BEEP BEEP* *BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*

“Who the hell is honking outside?” I asked.

Daesung and Seungri moved their heads around to look out the glass window. Sunghee and Youngbae were supposedly studying so hard they weren’t aware of the stuff happening around them.

“When people honk, you’re supposed to come out.” Jiyong said as he stood by the door.

I gave him a smug look and slowly walked over to him.

“Tell umma I’m leaving now.” I told Seungri.

“Where are you going noona?” Seungri asked.

“On a date with me.” Jiyong smirked.

Daesung let out a gasp.

“Noona is this true?” Daesung still had a shocked facial expression.

“Why are you so shocked? Are you starting to like noona?” Seungri asked Daesung.

“No, I just always thought that she liked Youngbae hyung.”

My eyes widen. I looked over to Youngbae to if he heard Daesung, but he showed no concern. It was obvious he was too into his studying time with Sunghee to care about anything else.

“Come on let’s go.” Jiyong grabbed my hand and dragged me to the car.

“Yah! What did I say about touching?” I threw his hands off of me.

“That’s the point of a date, what else do you expect us to do?” He got into the car.

“Just hurry up and drive so we can get this date over with.” I said as I buckle up my seat belt.

The rest of the ride was awkward silence. Even though I was looking out through my window the whole time, I felt Jiyong look at me when ever we stopped at the stop light. When we parked our car and walked over to the restaurant I kept my distance between him.

“Name?” The lady at the front counter asked.

“Kwon Jiyong.”

“This way please.”

The lady got up and led us through the restaurant.

Wow, this is a pretty nice restaurant. Wait, why is she leading us outside?

The lady had led us to the patio which had only one table with several candles lit in the center. Jiyong helped me get seated, but instead of sitting across from me he sat adjacent to me. The lady gave us our menu and left us alone. Several minutes later a waiter came back with water and bread and we ordered our food.

“You like this place?” Jiyong asked.

“It’s nice.” I stuffed a piece of bread in my mouth.

Jiyong took his hand and dusted the crumbs off of my lips. I looked at him shyly.

“Oh right, no touching.” Jiyong removed his hand.

I took my hand and wiped my lip. The waiter then brought us our food and left us alone again. We ate out food in silence.

This is the first time I’ve seen Jiyong so quiet and well mannered. Maybe he really did change. I like this side of Jiyong.

“Stop looking at me and eat your food.” Jiyong finally spoke.

Nope, I spoke too soon.

“Psh, who wants to look at you.” I looked down at and ate my food.

“Can I ask you something?” Jiyong asked.

“You just did.” I said without looking at him.

“Do you really hate me that much?”

“I don’t hate you, I just don’t like you.”

“Can I ask why?”

I looked up to see if he was serious.

“Because of the way to talk to me, isn’t it obvious enough?”

“What’s wrong with the way I talk to you?”

“Are you serious?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, you’re always making fun of me and now you keep referring me as your ‘baby’.”

“When did I ever make fun of you?” Jiyong looked up and started thinking. A couple of seconds later he let out a chuckle.” Oh yeah, now I remember. Good times.”

I shook my head and continue to eat my dinner.

“So, let’s say if I were to change the way I talk to you. Would you start liking me?”

Why is he even asking me this? Don’t tell me he really likes me.

“…I don’t know.”

“What if I give you this?” Jiyong dug in his pockets, took out a small box, and handed it to me.

“What’s this?”

“Open it.”

I opened the box and saw a small key necklace shaped like a heart.

“I’m giving you the key to my heart.”

I looked at him dumbfounded and he started laughing.

“I’m just kidding. I was about to give you that heart necklace you wanted, but it was sold out when I got there. I guess Youngbae beat me to it.”

“Then why’d you got me this?”

“It was the only other heart necklace there so I thought you might like it. Do you?”

“Yeah, it’s nice. Thanks.”

“Here, let me help you put it on.” Jiyong took the necklace and got up. He went behind me, helped me put it on and sat back down. “It looks good on you.”

“Thanks.”

Who would’ve thought that Jiyong can actually be so nice?

“So how am I doing so far?” Jiyong smiled.

“Pretty good, let’s see how long you can stay this way.”

Jiyong let out a little laugh, which made me laugh. For the first time I was comfortable being around him, but why is my heart starting to flutter?
