Chapter 3

Date: Sunday, February 7, 2010 Location: Raymond’s apartment Time: 8:23 AM

I got up early to start cooking breakfast, but Myolie suddenly called to inform me that her mom wanted to eat Dim Sum for breakfast this morning.

After getting the message, I pushed my plans of cooking breakfast for another day, got in my car, and drove to one of the most popular restaurant in Atlanta to save a table for us.

“Auntie, what do you like to eat?” I asked. I made sure both ladies were well taken care of during our meal. We ordered a variety of Dim Sum and shared an enjoyable morning together.

I ordered a plate of pork buns; picking up one of the buns I split it in half giving part to Myolie.

After breakfast, we took Myolie’s mom to one of the larger shopping malls in Atlanta, Lenox Square Mall. While they shopped, I did the guy thing: wait and carry their bags.

After several hours of shopping, we returned to Myolie’s apartment. “Dad’s flying in tonight and we’re having dinner with him, do you want to join us?” Myolie asked her mom, but she knew the answer already.

“No thanks sweetie. I think I’ll just stay here, do my face mask, and have a nice long bubble bath.” It was the expected answer; Myolie tried not to show her disappointment.

“What are you going to do about dinner?” Myolie asked hoping her mom would change her mind.

Maggie answered she’d figure something out, “You don’t mind me using your kitchen, right?”

“Only if you promise not to burn down my apartment.” Myolie teased her mother. Maggie rolled her eyes at Myolie and shook her head disapprovingly at Myolie’s comment. “Okay, well I guess I’ll see you tonight when I get home.” Myolie left Maggie her keys to the apartment and her car.

I have to admit, it was quite exhausting having to go to the airport two days in a row, but seeing Myolie so thrilled to see her parents was my motivation. I have made it my lifetime occupation to make sure she is happy. I consider myself successful being able to make Myolie smile.

After a twenty minute wait, her father, Damian Wu, walked out the gate. Myolie walked up to hug him as she had with her mom the previous day. Parting with him, she began to look around. “Only you Dad?” she asked.

He chucked, “Only me. Did you expect me to bring someone else?”

I was glad he didn’t, I’m still nervous about Myolie’s god-cousin, Ron.

“Are you hungry yet?” Myolie asked in a cheery tone.

“I’m staved.” Damian answered with a smile. “Is your Mom having dinner with us?” he inquired.

“No, Mom’s resting right now.” Myolie linked her arm into mine, “Dad, this is Raymond, my boyfriend.” At least she remembered to introduce me this time.

I extended my free hand forward, “Nice to meet you Uncle.” He didn’t accept my handshake, but instead raised an eyebrow at me suspiciously. I swallowed hard; he doesn’t like me.

He turned back to Myolie and asked her where we would be eating at. “I made reservations for your favorite, Japanese.” She answered.

We ordered a couple of different sushi rolls to share. While waiting for our food, I watched Myolie and Damian talk animatedly together. Dinner was quiet for me once again; Damian treated me as if I were invisible the entire night. Even Myolie seemed to have forgotten about me. I was getting sadder and sadder by the day; I’ve barely had the chance to talk with Myolie for the past two days.

The three of us stepped out of the restaurant and stood by my car, “Dad, where are you staying?” Myolie asked, “We’ll drop you off at your hotel.”

“I thought I was staying with you.” Damian answered. “I didn’t make reservations.”

Myolie looked shocked by his answer, “Mom is staying at my apartment. I didn’t realize you were planning on staying with me.” I could tell Myolie was struggling to solve her dilemma.

“Uncle, you can stay with me at my apartment, I have an extra bedroom” I offered. “I live right next door to Myolie.” Damian frowned towards me.

“Yeah Dad, why don’t you stay with Raymond?” He shrugged his shoulders, so I guess that was a yes.

We arrive back at the apartments and Damian wanted to see Myolie’s apartment first. The moment Myolie opened the door and we stepped inside, I though Maggie was about to explode. “What are you doing here? Myolie, is he staying here too? I’m not staying in the same place as him.”

“If you don’t like it then you can leave.” Damian answered her. Maggie was about to retaliate.

“Dad.” Myolie said in a warning tone and gave him a stern look indicating to him not to provoke her mother anymore. “Dad is staying with Raymond.” Myolie answered her mom. “He just wanted to see what my apartment looked like.” Myolie walked over to Damian, “I bet you’re tired after your flight, why don’t you head on over to Raymond’s apartment, take a shower and get a good night sleep.”

The morning after Damian’s arrival, I checked over my notes before cooking breakfast. I made sausage, sunny side up eggs, and biscuits.

As I plated the food, Damian exited Fred’s old bedroom. “Morning Uncle.” I greeted. I finished my masterpiece by pouring the three cups of mocha lattes I just made.

Setting a plate and drink on the counter I invited Damian over, “Have a seat Uncle.” He took a seat on the bar stool. Again, he raised his eyebrow at me giving me an odd look.

I opened the door of my apartment widely before walking back over into my kitchen. Skillfully, I placed the two remaining plates on my left arm while grabbing the two mocha lattes in my right hand.

Kicking the door of Myolie’s apartment with my foot she answered it with a smile, “Let me help you with those.” She took the plates from me and set them on the counter. I did the same with the drinks.

“Morning” I greeted. She greeted me back with a sweet kiss. We parted when we heard Maggie clear her throat. Myolie blushed and I smiled sheepishly, “Morning Auntie, I made breakfast, so I brought some over.”

Maggie took a seat and had a satisfying look, “You made all my favorites Raymond.” She sounded delighted. Picking up the mocha latte, “Mmmm, this coffee smells delicious.” Maggie commented. After taking a sip, “You sure make a good cup of coffee.” I smiled hearing Maggie compliment me.

Myolie pulled me aside, “You didn’t make the same thing for Dad, did you?” I nodded. The look on her face already told me it was bad news. “You didn’t make him a mocha latte too?” I nodded again. Her look worsened. “Dad, doesn’t like American food for breakfast. He’ll only eat porridge and noodles. And he drinks tea most of the time; if he ever drinks coffee, he drinks it black. He’s not a fan of those coffee drinks with milk.”

My head lowered, “No wonder your dad looked at me like I was a lunatic. Myolie I don’t know what I can do to make your dad like.” I said sadly.

“Don’t worry; I’m sure Dad likes you. You’re just being paranoid and thinking too much. Just make him some noodles for breakfast tomorrow.”

I nodded at her suggestion. “I have to go to work, I’ll see you tonight.” Myolie helped fix my tie and gave me a peck on the cheek before walking me to the door.

Myolie had taken the week off to spend with her parents and to help Jack and Selena with their wedding. I have requested for the week off starting tomorrow, but bad news was waiting for me at work.
