Chapter 1

“Princess, daddy’s home” Michael announced as he entered the house.

Seven year old Nancy reacted upon hearing her name and rushed forward to hug her father. She wrapped her tiny arms around her father’s legs. “Daddy, look at what I made at school today.” She proudly held up her drawing for her father to admire.

“That’s great honey.” He replied unenthusiastically.

“And I learned a new dance, watch daddy, I’ll show you.”

“Where’s your mom and your sister?” he asked without giving Nancy another look.

Nancy frowned as she was unable to get her father’s attention, “Mommy is listening to Myolie practice piano.”

Michael did not hear any music being played, because that instant Myolie had run up and hugged his legs just as Nancy had earlier. However, unlike Nancy, Myolie received her father’s full attention. He gave her a big smile before picking her up and carrying her over to the couch where he placed her in his lap. “How’s my little princess doing today?”

Nancy looked at her younger sister, Myolie, with hatred. Princess, that was suppose to be her nickname. Her parents used to call her that. Only she was allowed to be called that by her parents. Ever since Myolie was born they seemed to have forgotten about her. Everything was always about Myolie.

Their parents favored Myolie because she was a child prodigy in music. She had her first piano recital when she was four, performing in front of hundreds of people and not making a single mistake.

No matter what Nancy did, her parents did not bother to take part. She had been chosen to play the main character in the school play, but her parents were busy and could not attend. They were too busy going shopping for a new dress for Myolie to wear at her next recital; that is the reason why they could not make it.

She was in the finals for a school competition, all the other children’s parents came to support them, whereas her parents; they were too busy taking Myolie to an interview with the local newspaper. She sat alone, preformed alone, received her award alone and had her picture made alone.

She often told her classmates that her parents were busy with business so they would not make fun of her of being parent-less. But it did not make much of a difference, she might as well be. She was tired of making up excuses of why they did not show up to any events concerning her. She was tired of the way her parents were treating her. It was almost as if she did not exist.

Myolie and Nancy grew up to be complete opposite of each other. Myolie was obedient and made good grades. She brought home praises and recognition. Everything she did made her parents proud. She won the attention of her parents without even trying.

On the other hand, Nancy was often associated with the wrong people. She did not make top marks, but rather, she lagged behind on her schoolwork. Her parents despised her; almost wanting to disown her.

Nancy would usually return home late each night. She did it just so her parents would scold her. At least that meant they still acknowledge her presence. She constantly argued with them, but to her it was like having a conversation with them.

Myolie tried really hard to make Nancy like her. When they were younger, she would share her food with Nancy, but Nancy never ate a bite. Whenever her parents were angry with Nancy, she would put in a good word for her. However, she never achieved her goal.

“What’s wrong with you?” Nancy’s best friend, Leila, asked.

“Nothing.” She simply answered. Though she could tell Leila was not satisfied by her answer, “My parents want me to go to another one of those stupid recitals.”

“For your sister again?”

“Who else, she’s the only daughter they have in their eyes. I don’t even know why they bother to tell me to go. It’s only a waste of my time; each performance sounds the same to me.”

“Maybe it won’t be that bad this time.”

“Who’s side are you on?” Nancy asked angrily.

“You’re side, of course, we’re best friends. I was just saying maybe they want to try to repair their relationship with you.”

“I doubt it. They’ve basically erased me from their lives.”

“That’s probably not true.” Seeing Nancy become irritated by the subject, Leila mentions something different. “You’re 16th birthday is coming up soon, maybe your parents are going to have a big surprise for you.”

“Yeah right,” Nancy snickered, “that’s the same night as Myolie’s recital. Can we just drop the conversation Leila?” Nancy asked and Leila nodded.

“Auntie, Uncle, Nancy should be on her way home.” Leila told them.

“I really don’t understand her.” Sheren let out a scoff.

“Mom, Dad, I’m sure Nancy will be home soon. Maybe she’s out with some of her friends.”

“Myolie, stop trying to protect your sister, all her friends are here already, where else could she be?”

It was nearly 10 o’clock, Michael and Sheren sent all the guests they had invited home. They sat down on the couch to wait for Nancy to get home. An hour later, Myolie heard keys opening the front door, she immediately ran into the kitchen.

“Where have you been?” Sheren questioned.

“None of your business.” Nancy replied.

“Have you been drinking?” Sheren suspected from the smell of beer on Nancy.

“Would you believe me if I told you I haven’t been.”

“Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to Nancy, happy birthday to you.” Myolie sang as she carried out the birthday cake she had specially picked out for Nancy.

“Look, Myolie planned this big surprise party just for you. She invited all your friends from school and you didn’t even come home. Do you know how embarrassed we were?”

“That’s all you care about isn’t it. I’m sorry I’ve embarrassed you then.”

“Mom, Nancy, stop arguing.” Myolie pleaded. She held the cake in front of Nancy, “Make a wish Nancy.”

“I don’t need you to pity me.” She shoved the cake out of Myolie’s hand. It fell apart as it hit the ground.

Michael stepped forward and slapped Nancy, “That’s enough” he shouted. Tears welled in Nancy’s eyes. She place her hand over her redden cheek and without saying another word she stormed out of the house.

Myolie started chasing after her, “Nancy, wait!”

Nancy was running on the street still crying. Myolie was trying to run faster to catch up with her, “Nancy, Dad didn’t mean to hit you!”

Nancy ran out into the road, when suddenly a truck was coming toward her. She froze; unable to react to the situation. Suddenly she felt someone push her out of the way from behind.

As she fell to the ground, she saw Myolie’s body being run over by the truck like a rolling pin flattening a piece of dough….
