Chapter 9

Locket (Heechul/Sungmin)

The faint pulse of a heartbeat sounds in Heechul's ears, and it's all he can hear. The beating gets quicker and quicker, until it suddenly starts to slow down. He closes his eyes and listens to the heartbeat, feeling the rythm where his ear is pressed. He keeps his eyes closed, unable to find energy nor the desire to reopen them to the scene before him. He listens until even the heartbeat is washed out of his hearing and he's unconcious.

Five hours before

"I can't believe you!" Heechul shouted as Sungmin desperately tried to explain, but Heechul didn't listen. He could barely see anything beside red. There was an odd ringing in his ears and it was drowning out Sungmin's pleas for him to listen. Heechul grabbed his coat and slammed the door behind him. The other members didn't interfere with the fight. He stomped down the street, looking around and wondering where exactly he was going to go. He didn't have anything planned, and there was NO way he was going back to the dorm. Not after his big explosion and exit. He blew air out of his cheeks angrily. Why did Sungmin have to in the first place? First he doesn't even warn Heechul about stupid schedule, when Leeteuk asked him too, and then he doesn't even apologize when Heechul's late! The entire practice was held up, and because of Sungmin and Heechul's figh they barely got much done with the two cooperating before they had to leave for the next location and event. Heechul felt like a total idiot and Sungmin was blaming him for it all! That stupid--!
Heechul stopped himself, almost shocked that he almost thought something like that about Sungmin. He was still irritated, but felt drained, and didn't really want to fight. But what could he do now? He'd made too big of a deal of it before, and there was no way he was apologizing first. After Heechul had finished yelling at Sungmin once they were back at the dorm, Sungmin tried to say something, but now Heechul realized it was probably what he wanted to hear now.
He bit his lip angrily, wishing he hadn't been so stupid and angry. He looked around, spotted a random store and walked in, collapsing on a seat and leaning against a wall wearily. He surveyed the room, where drinks were being served at bar. He sat a while and watched people drink and come and go.
Then someone walked in and tentatively sat down next to him. He said nothing.
". . .Hyung?" Heechul sighed, for a reason he didn't know. "I'm sorry." Sungmin said in a small voice. Heechul sighed again and put his arm around Sungmin's shoulder.
"Me too." Nothing else was said a while more. Then Heechul stood up. "Come on. Let's get something to drink." The next few hours, Heechul was laughing and talking to Sungmin, and he barely remembered what was said, only that he was happy and glad to at peaceful terms once again.
A couple hours later, tipsy but not full-blown drunk, the two climbed into a car, seeing only by the yellow light of a street lamp a couple yards away. Of course, both their senses were dulled. This, however, was still not the fault of the younger Super Junior member as one car crashed into another, inuring all three involved.

Heechul screamed, but in all the chaos, his voice wasn't heard. He wound up on top of Sungmin, his head resting on the younger boy's chest. He listened to the heartbeat, The last thing he feels is Sungmin's hands, which are shaking, wrapping something gently around Heechul's neck before all went terrifyingly dark and silent.

In the hospital

Harsh lights are shining all too brightly when Heechul opens his eyes. He sees faces, but is too confused to put names to the faces. He blinks away the drowsiness, groaning a bit in his pain and hears a sigh of what sounds like sad relief run around the room quietly.
"Where's Sungmin?" He asks. His words are slurred together, and almost he doesn't understand what he's said. One boy steps forward, and Heechul's mind registers the name--Leeteuk. He reached for Heechul's neck and touches a gold chain gently. A gold chain that Heechul doesn't remember having.
"Sungmin," Leeteuk whispers, "Sungmin gave this to you?" Heechul inspects it as best as he can, even though his head is aching and his right shoulder is burning.
"I--I think so." He replies, recalling the moment in the car before he fainted as he drops the chain. "Where is Sungmin?" If the room wasn't quite before, it is now. He feels Leeteuk's hand gently press against his, and he's too scared by the gesture to pull away from it. His eyes travel from one Super Junior member to another. "Is he," Heechul pauses, searching silently and panicked, for a reason. "Is he is a coma or something?" Leeteuk's reply is almost inaudible.
"Heechul, Sungmin is dead." Something hits Heechul in the chest, restricting and pushing in down so hard he can't breath. The room spins around him, and he hears a strange rasping sound. "Are you alright?" Leeteuk. Heechul realizes the sound is him trying to gasp for breath. He shuts his eyes, and silent tears start trailing down. Slowly at first, but then, more and more.
His shoulders are shaking, and he doesn't feel like he shouldn't be crying. A small sound escapes his mouth, and Leeteuk leans over and wraps his arms lightly around Heechul. Heechul sit there, sobbing into his shoulder like a small child until he is finally quiet.
A little while later, they have to leave. Heechul spends the sleepless night in the dark silent room thinking about his family. Not his biological family, his brothers.
Heechul gets up. The lights are on again, and a nurse informs him he can get up and move about if he so wishes. He trudges through the halls, his eyes only half open, searching for an exit, an escape until he finds one, breathing the fresh air in heavily.
He sits down around the other side of the building, leaning against the rough wall and watching the sky. Then he feels cold metal touch his shoulder. He remembers the chain. He undoes the clasp, staring at it. Attached to the chain, is a star. It takes several minutes, but finally Heechul manages to open it up with his thumbnail. He stares at the inside, and drops the locket.
His eyes are blurred up when he picks the locket up again, an escaped tear slides down his cheek. He rubs at it angrily, then takes out a folded piece of paper. Blood stains one corner. Behind the paper is a tiny star-shaped photo. Heechul doesn't want to see the photo yet, so he unfolds the paper, and sees the familiar curvy scrawling.
He looks at the note, and wonders why. How could Sungmin have known? Somehow?
He looks at the photo now, and starts crying once again. Heechul has his arm wrapped around Sungmin's shoulders, and their both laughing--uncontrollably, by the looks of it--at something. Heechul is only able to read the note one more time before the world gets too blurry for him. The small bloodstained piece of paper flutters to the ground.

"Heechul, thank you for being my hyung."
