(Next day – Sunday – Gallen’s place – 9.30 a.m.)
The morning ray shone brightly through the lining blinds, forcing Gallen to open his sleepy eyes reluctantly. He raises his left hand up and massages his temple, letting out a faint anguish while patting his forehead lightly. He drew down the blinds and opened the windows for the fresh air to enter and refreshes his complicated mind.
He thought about Maggie, and her words yesterday again…
“You know how you have been treating me all this while! Have you ever shown concern for me? Have you ever treated me like your girlfriend? Where were you when I was sick and alone? Where were you when I most needed console? You were with all your fair-weathered friends, drinking and chatting away!”
GALLEN: (to himself) No! I wasn’t! I just thought every couple should have their own space of privacy and freedom, but I never expected you to lose your sense of security in me…
He pulls out the side drawer and takes out a red velvet box…
*FLASHBACKS*
(10 days ago – Amazise pub – 8.45 p.m.)
GALLEN: (picked up his cell phone) Hello? Maggie? What’s the matter?
{MAGGIE: Gallen, are you free to come over now? I am so unhappy today.}
GALLEN: Now? But I’m with my friends.
SUNNY: (heard him) It’s ok, Gallen, you can go first if you need to.
KENIX: Yup, it’s ok with us!
GALLEN: (into the phone) Why not I come later? Erm… two hours later?
{MAGGIE: Why must you wait until two hours later? Why can’t you come at once?}
GALLEN: I have something to do now, see you later, ok?
{MAGGIE: (disappointedly) Fine, do as you deem fit! (hangs up)}
RAYMOND: Gor, why didn’t you agree to join her now?
GALLEN: (forces a smile) Nah… I should not spoil her too much.
KENIX: (disagreeing) This is not called spoiling, it’s care, mind you! I feel bad for your girlfriend!
SUNNY: Uh huh, I agree. You should not neglect her too much, not advisable to do so!
KENIX: He’s speaking from experience!
GALLEN: I know you two have lots of chemistry, you don’t need to show it to me!
RAYMOND: They are right, Gor! Better do something before you regret it later… (sighs)
GALLEN: (looking at him) Ray, you’re thinking of Michelle again?
RAYMOND: (exhales) I am an example you shouldn’t ever follow, see?
GALLEN: Actually, I wanted to give her a surprise. (taking out a red velvet box)
KENIX: (snatches it) Let me see! (opens up) Wow, this is such a cool diamond ring, must have cost you a bomb!
SUNNY: (grinning) Nah… that is nothing to him, this guy is rich!!!
RAYMOND: (grins) Hey, Gor! I didn’t knew you really bought the ring!
KENIX: Actually, it’s such an irony! As an author, you are brilliant with all your thoughts and phrases, according to logic, you should be excellently good at expressing…
SUNNY: Never speak logic to this guy, he has none!

(Same night – Maggie’s apartment – 10.15 p.m.)
GALLEN: (ringing the bell) Maggie?
MAGGIE: (opens the door) You’re finally here!
GALLEN: (enters) Uh huh. (smilingly) I have a surprise for you.! (sees someone) Who is he? (keeps his smile)
Nick put down his wine glass at the coffee table, and stands up.
NICK: (walks towards him, extends his hand) Hi, I’m Nick Kwok, nice to meet you!
GALLEN: ( a bit jealous, forcing a smile) Hi, Gallen Yip. Excuse me. (pulls Maggie to kitchen)
MAGGIE: (following him) What’s the matter?
GALLEN: Who is he? Why did you ask him here?
MAGGIE: He’s just a patient at my clinic. You said you were not free, so I just ask him here for a talk.
GALLEN: But I told you I’ll be here!
MAGGIE: Now what’s wrong with me chatting with a friend? You are with your friends too, and I never interfere!
GALLEN: That’s different! You know Sunny and Kenix too, you can join us too!
MAGGIE: (a bit unhappily) You know I don’t like to go to those noisy places! (pauses, releasing a gasp) Ok, let’s switch topic. What surprise did you want to give me just now?
GALLEN: (hesitating) I am the surprise!
MAGGIE: (chuckles) You? Oh my god, you’re so lame!
GALLEN: Are you free next Sunday?
MAGGIE: Should be, why do you ask?
GALLEN: Erm… so we can have dinner at your favorite restaurant!
MAGGIE: (smiles) Hmmm… ok!
*END OF FLASHBACKS*
RAYMOND: (entering the room) Gor, you’re up? (looks at what he’s holding) What happened actually?
GALLEN: Maggie left me, she’s gone with Nick…
RAYMOND: Nick? The one you saw at her place last time? What is their relationship?
GALLEN: I don't know… And I don’t want to know…

(The next day – Monday – HK University)
RAYMOND: (sighs) My brother is so pitiful, I don't know when he will ever get over it!
SAMMUL: (smiles) Come on! Have some confidence in him, he’s a strong one, isn’t he?
RAYMOND: Hope so… (sees someone, and calling out) Prof Chan!
FLORA: Hi, Ray, Sam. No lessons today?
SAMMUL: We do, but I think he doesn’t have the mood to teach today… (looks at Raymond)
FLORA: (looks at Raymond) What happened?
SAMMUL: His brother is lovelorn, and it’s contagious!
RAYMOND: Don’t listen to him, I know how to differentiate between family and work perfectly!
FLORA: (smiles) Yeah, I trust you!
TAVIA: (joining them with Myolie) Hi, Biu Gor, what are you talking about?
SAMMUL: (smiles) Hi Myolie.
MYOLIE: Hi.
TAVIA: Hey, am I transparent? (standing nearer to him)
SAMMUL: (blushing a bit) I am not blind! You don't need to block me!
FLORA: Anyway, are you guys free this Thursday?
TAVIA: Why? (grinning) A dinner treat from Prof Chan?
FLORA: (smiles) Nope. But Roger’s having his birthday party held at his house this Thursday, so I thought perhaps you few would be interested to join in!
TAVIA: (cheerfully) Of course! What about you, Ray?
RAYMOND: Erm, I am Ok with it.
SAMMUL: Me too! Myolie?
MYOLIE: Erm…
SAMMUL: You have something on that day?
MYOLIE: Nope… Ermm… I think I should be able to make it.
SAMMUL: Great!
TAVIA: Now why aren’t you so happy when I said I can go?
SAMMUL: The more the merrier, sis!
MYOLIE: (to Flora) Will Jess and Ada be there too?
FLORA: Uh huh, why? (pauses) You’re afraid to see Jess? You two are cousins and she has nothing against you, silly girl!
TAVIA: Yup, you should take this chance to relax!
FLORA: Precisely! (to Raymond) Ray, you can ask your brother along too! (to Sammul) And your sister!
SAMMUL: (hesitating) Eh… she’s not in HK now.
FLORA: Oh… never mind then, Ray, remember to bring your brother along, see you all then, bye… (walks away)
TAVIA: (whispering to Sammul) What’s wrong?
SAMMUL: (whispered back) Ka Jai went away with another guy!
TAVIA: (sticks out her tongue) Ooops…
