Chapter 5

The End

~The Next Day~

During lunch time, we decided to sit together. We
were talking and holding hands under the table as usual.
In an instant, the atmosphere felt as if time had been
rewound to the time before anything happened, before
Gui Gui appeared. We were talking and eating. I saw a
small crumb of bread by the corner of his mouth, so I
took a napkin and wiped it off for him. Every now and
then I noticed that whenever we talked, he'd look away
towards a certain direction and smile. I became a little
mad, so I turned towards the area he was eyeing and
caught a sight of Gui Gui waving her hand at Aaron.
Ugh! She just never gives up does she?!

"You know what…” I said, annoyed, impatient. “If you
don't like me, then I guess you'd be better off with Gui
Gui," I said. Suddenly, the words of the Genie Zhou son
“愛我好嗎 (Can You Love Me?)”” blasted through the
lunchroom over the music speakers. [Note: Sorry if I
didn’t translated the lyrics right.]

“我願意讓傷心再來一遍 (I would rather you hurt me once more)

只要你留一個位子給我 (And you would leave a space for me)

哪怕是在你心中 (Anywhere in your heart)

最容易被忽略的角落 (Even if it’s a lonely corner)

喔 愛我好嗎 (Oh, can you love me?)”

"What are you talking about?" he asked.

Sweetie, don't play stupid with me, I'm better at it. I
thought.

"I know that you don't like me, so why waste our time?" I
blurted out.

"Why would you think that?"

"No, I know that. I know that you don't like me, so just...
Just go to her... This is not the kind of relationship I
want." He was completely speechless, and he stood up
and walked over to her. I wasn’t surprised.

At my spare time, I took time wondering about how
Prince Charming seemed to appear in every fairytale.
Like Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty. Then
I thought, that’s kinda like cheating. Then that idea
immediately relates to Aaron and I, except, I wasn’t a
beautiful princess and he was no handsome prince
either.

After about a week, I was almost fully recovered
from the breakup. I was staying after school to finish
our project, and he was too. Even though this project
was supposed to be a partner project, we decided to
work alone. Aaron sat at the table next to mine. I
colored the Japanese flag with colored pencils, and he
needed to use it too. He came over and asked if he
could sit next to me and share the colored pencils.

"Just take it and give it back to me when you're done." I
wanted to be nice to him, but it was kind of hard to do
when the boy you’re speaking to broke your heart into
millions of pieces.

"No, you still haven't finished coloring the flag yet. We
can just share it," he said, obviously looking for an
excuse to talk to me.

"Fine," I said, irritated.

"Can I sit here?" Aaron widen his big gorgeous brown
eyes, revealing his innocent expression that held
nothing but warmth and sincerity. It was practically
impossible to say no. Once I nodded yes, he flashed his
glamorous smile exposing his perfectly white,
straightened teeth. Aaron had me melting inside, my
heart felt like it was going to stop beating any minute.

When Mrs. Lin announced that we had to go, I
packed up all of my stuff and started to walk. Aaron
held my hand and pulled me back gently. I turned
around, displeased.

"Wait." He pleaded.

"What?" I rolled my eyes, waiting for an explanation.

"I have something to tell you."

"And what would that be?" I asked with an attitude,
wondered if I might have gone too far with my rude
manner.

"Look, I know that you must really hate me right now.
But this whole week I haven't been able to stop thinking
about you..."

"So? What’s your point?"

"I never felt true love until I was with you, and I never
felt true sadness until you left me." He was holding both
of my hands. My expression softened, quickly going
from bitter to completely sweet.

"I want to give that chance to you, but how would I
know that this Gui Gui thing won't happen again?"

"You don't... but I promise you it will never ever happen
again. I swear!” he said with sincerity. “My love for you
will never diminish, but increase.” I placed my warm hand
onto his mouth.

“Shh…” I released my hand. “Okay, I believe you. But I'm
only giving you one more chance." Was I making the
right decision? I couldn’t tell.

"Really? Thank you so much! I will not let the same
incident repeat again." He sounded like he had been
fired from a job, but his boss was giving him a second
chance.

A couple months later during the summertime, we
made plans to hang out at the beach for about two
months. Aaron came by my house and picked me up. I
was dressed up in a white tight tank top, and a pair of
navy colored shorts with a black messenger bag full of
clothes.

"Hi there, beautiful," he greeted me.

"Hey, handsome." I smiled.

"Ready to go?" he asked.

"I've been ready for months," I said as we walked towards
his car. He opened the door for me, and I found a
bouquet of red roses on my seat.

"For you," he said.

"Aw, thank you!!" I gave him a kiss and it lasted longer
than I had imagined. He finally released when he noticed
that I was running out of breath.

"Anything for you, my love." He tried so hard to gain my
trust back; he didn't even need to do all these things. I
got in the passenger seat while he closed the door
behind me. He started the car as it roared to life. He
drove off towards the seashore direction.

When we arrived at the beach around late
afternoon, Aaron and I settled into his summer vacation
house. I suggested that we take a walk by the seaside
since he liked taking long walks. So we held hands,
shared an ice cream cone and wandered by the
boardwalk right next to the gorgeous beach. While we
walked, we watched the sun set bit by bit. It was like
one of those romantic movie scenes, except this was
real. When we finished walking, we went down to the
beach and slowly started to pace back to the house.

It was already dark we arrived back at the house.
He went to the bathroom while I walked into my room
and realized there was a trail of white rose petals that lead to my bed. I then found this giant Hershey Kiss
covered with red foil right on the center, along with red
and pink rose petals all over. The paper that was
wrapped around the Kisses said in red letters, "As long
as you smile that beautiful and radiant smile of yours, I
shall hold on to you and never let go. Love, Aaron."

I smiled. Suddenly, he came in, pulled me into his
embrace from behind, and told me, "That,” Aaron
whispered, “is a promise, my love."
