“Of course you do.” He countered. “The question is, do you love me more than Aaron?”
Once again, I was startled. Wang Zi was serious, he really wanted to know. What should I tell him? I don’t love him more than Aaron. Maybe. I don’t know. “Possibly.” I went for a safe answer.
“I don’t want a safe answer, Gui.” He retorted, as if he could read my mind. “Who do love more? Me or Aaron?”
I was alarmed; I wasn’t ready to answer his question—at least not yet. “I am here to listen to Xiao Xun’s explanation, right? Why are we talking about that?”
Wang Zi heaved a sigh, admitting defeat. That was close.
“Okay Xiao Xun, start explaining.” I demanded.
Xiao Xun nodded and started explaining. “My mom and Aaron’s mom are best friends, so that means, they always see each other. Sometimes, my mom goes to his mom’s house and sometimes, it’s the opposite. We know each other because we meet often—not just in school but also in some reunions and other occasions. We talk a bit but we’re really not that close.” She looked at me and checked if I was still listening.
“It’s not that boring, I’m still awake.” I joked wryly.
“A week after their graduation, we went to their house. When we arrived, his mom and my mom kept on asking us to go out. But at that time, I knew that he was with Hebe so I told them that it would be a really good idea but he has a girlfriend so we can’t go out. What I didn’t know was, he already broke up with Hebe. Aaron’s mom said that he broke up with Hebe and we could go out. With that, we weren’t able to back out anymore.” She quivered at the thought of their relationship’s origin and looked at me. “I’m not done yet. I will continue later, we have to go to class.”
Oh! Class! Why now? I really want to know. “Oh.” I stood up and linked my arms with Xiao Xun and Wang Zi. Xiao Xun smiled but Wang Zi didn’t.
“What’s wrong?” I asked. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, Gui. I understand.” He replied.
Why does he always understand? I’m hurting him too much but he still understands! I wish I could just make him mad!

I sighed as we entered the classroom. The form teacher stared at us and she looked mad.
“Why are you two late?” She asked.
“We…we…” I stammered.
“We went to the clinic Ms. Meng.” Xiao Xun helped me.
Ms. Meng groaned. “Excuses! I don’t want to hear them! Go back to your seats and shut up!”
I snickered slightly. “She’s so grumpy in the morning!”
“More like every time!” Xiao Xun laughed.

The time went on like a turtle, it was so slow. I tried to forget Xiao Xun’s story but I just couldn’t. I fell asleep in class and my classmates laughed at me when my language teacher caught me sleeping.
But after what seemed like forever, the bell rung and the class was dismissed.
When I stepped out of the room, Xiao Man and Ya Tou were there, already waiting for us.
“Your teacher’s so slow!” Xiao Man ranted.
“Tell me about it!” Xiao Xun exclaimed.
“Now, where are we going? I want Xiao Xun to continue her explanation already.” I said.
“Oh my gosh, you’re finally willing to listen!” Ya Tou sounded surprised.
“Of course!” I laughed. “Hey, where’s Wang Zi?”
“He left already. I don’t know how but she gave our form teacher a letter and then he was allowed to go.” Xiao Man exclaimed.
“Oh.” I said. He left? Why? Maybe he has some things to do. “Now, let’s go and find a comfy place where Xiao Xun could explain.”
We walked outside the building and found an empty bench beside a big tree.We decided to settle there. Xiao Xun told them the things they didn’t know and continued with her story.
“Uhm, so… Aaron and I talked after dinner that night. He said that we should just pretend to be together to make our moms happy. He said that he would be really bored that summer so it would be nice to have a friend with him. As I’ve said, we decided to pretend so we kiss and act sweet when we were with our moms. But when we weren’t with our moms, we act just like normal friends. I know the idea was lame but our moms won’t stop if we didn’t do it.” Xiao Xun said.
All of us stared at her in astonishment.
“So that’s it?” I asked.
“No.” Xiao Xun replied. “I fell in love with Aaron but he didn’t know. At that time, when we kiss, I made myself believe that the kisses were real and that we really were together. We were so close that he shared his secrets with me—we even talked about you a lot of times. He said that he loves you and that he feels bad that he only realized it when you were mad at him already. Of course, I felt bad for him but I felt worse for myself for I was in love with someone who would never like me in a million years.” She sobbed.
“Oh my gosh, you still love Aaron?” I asked. “I’m so sorry. You can have him.”
She wiped her tears and said, “No. Yes. I don’t know. My love for him is now slowly disappearing so it doesn’t matter.” She laughed.
“But still, we can’t be together anymore. You can have him.” I held her hand.
“No Gui Gui. Do you want me to continue or not?” She asked, pretending to be mad.
I laughed and I signaled her to go one.
“I have to admit, it was my fault. What Aaron and I had was a fling but I took it seriously.” She added. “When I knew that you and Wang Zi were together, I felt bad. It’s not that I didn’t want you to be together, it’s just that I feel sad for Aaron. He loves you so much, Gui Gui.”
I felt tear forming at the sides of my eyes. What am I doing? “Can I go talk to him? I want to say I’m sorry.”
“Of course you can.” Ya Tou answered. “But you have to talk to Wang Zi too. Tell him how you really feel about Aaron. You have to break up with him properly.”
Oh right. Wang Zi. What shall I do? “But!” I protested. “I can’t hurt Wang Zi! I love him.”
“You love Wang Zi but you love Aaron too. What are you going to do then?” Xiao Man asked.
“I don’t know.” I confessed.
“But you have to do something.” Xiao Xun said.
“I think I will just break up with Wang Zi and not talk to Aaron forever.” I said. “That, way, both of them won’t be hurt.”
Ya Tou hit my head. “Are you stupid? If you did what you just said, the three of you would be hurt!”
“What?” I asked. “I don’t understand.”
“If you did that, Wang Zi and Aaron will be upset because you’re still unhappy in the end.” Xiao Xun explained.
It thought through it and realized that what Xiao Xun said was true. “What should I do then?”
“I think you should give yourself time. What you’re going to do is… wait.” Xiao Man suggested.
I sighed. “Maybe you’re right.”
