Chapter 23

Happy Ending

Hi!

Here' the last chapter! :)

Enjoy!

---------

It was the day of graduation but I can still remember everything that happened that day. I thought it was a day that would cheer me up but I was wrong. Aaron didn’t come. He only told them that he can’t meet me yet and that he was afraid that I might reject him again. I wanted to cry when Ah Wei explained what Aaron had said but I didn’t. Because I didn’t want to look weak. They all thought I was going to break down again, but I didn’t. I didn’t leave and I stayed with them until the girls went home.

When I got home, that’s when I started crying.

I let myself cry for hours in one condition—it was going to be the last.

And it was. I never cried again.

I went out partying with Ya Tou, Xiao Xun and Xiao Man, never giving anyone a hint that I was still broken inside.

And with the help of my great acting skills, everyone thought I was already over him.

Even I, thought so too. But now that it’s the last day of high school, the graduation day, and the supposed to be ‘expiration day’, as what Aaron used to call it, of our so-called agreement, I’m not so sure anymore.

“Gui,” Ya Tou called me.

“What?” I asked.

“Let’s get in already! The graduation’s about to start.”

I nodded halfheartedly and walked beside Ya Tou. Xiao Man and Xiao Xun were already inside the hall for Xiao Xun wanted to be ready for her speech and she wanted Xiao Man to go with her. Xiao Xun was the new valedictorian. She was only supposed to be next to Wang Zi but now that he’s gone, she took her place.

I sighed at the thought of my best friend. “When is he coming back?” I asked myself and Ya Tou heard it.

“Soon,” she laughs.

I gave her a perplexed gaze but she only laughed. I let it go since she was always like that anyway. She was always saying nonsensical things, it wasn’t really new.

We went to our seats and settled down. Soon enough, the emcee went up the stage and said that the commencement was about to start. I whistled silently because I was bored. Ya tou kept on asking me to stop so I gave up and finally kept quiet.

“And now,” the emcee starts. “Let’s hear our valedictorian’s speech.”

That got me out of my trance. I sat up straight, decided to brush Wang Zi and Aaron out of my mind and listened intently to what my best friend was saying.

“Good afternoon classmates!” Xiao Xun greeted with a smile on her face. “I wasn’t really sure what to say here right now so I’m really very sorry. And besides, this award isn’t really for me—it’s for Wang Zi.”

The students laughed at her earnest statement and gave her a round of applause.

“Anyway, I would like to thank the teachers for teaching all of us things I don’t think I still remember now.” She continued.

That made the students cheer loudly. The teachers looked at Xiao Xun and she just gave them a shrug.

“But seriously speaking, I want to thank all my friends for being there for me. Gui Gui, Ya Tou, and Xiao Man, you three are the greatest friends I’ll ever get.”

I smiled at Xiao Xun’s sweetness.

“I can’t imagine senior year with you and Wang Zi. I love you guys!”

With that, she went on with her serious speech. She said something about us moving on to the future with no regrets and living life to the fullest, now that we have finally finished the hardest part of education. She wished the students who will go on college good luck and wished the others who won’t to have a free and happy life. Though her speech seemed serious, she still added her own humor in it that made all of us laugh.

“Until we meet again,” was the last part of her speech. We cheered loudly at her speech and the emcee had to ask us to literally shut up so we can end the graduation.

Lastly, the principal spoke and congratulated all of us.

And then, the graduation was done.

We were all high school graduates.

-----

“You were so funny up there!” Xiao Man exclaimed hugging us.

“Really?” She asked. “Thank you! I was really trying to be funny because I didn’t want the students to fall asleep.”

It took us a lot of time before we finally left the school because a lot of people were congratulating us and telling us their goodbyes. And when we finally did, I figured that we haven’t planned anything yet.

“Hey,” I called their attention. “Why don’t we go eat somewhere?”

They all looked down and shook their heads. “I’m sorry, Gui. But we have other plans.”

Of course, they do. They wanted to celebrate their graduation with their boyfriends. “Oh.” I said while trying to get my phone inside my bag. “I’ll call my parents to get me then. Can you wait for me before you leave?”

Once again, they shook their heads.

“Oh okay, you can leave me here. It’s okay.” I said, trying my best to act as if it was really okay.

“No, no, no.” Xiao Xun disagreed. “It’s not okay because you’re coming with us!” And the all laughed.

“Really?” I suddenly felt excited. “Where to?”

“To the beach!” Ya Tou shouted. “3 days, 2 nights!”

“But I don’t have my clothes!” I protested. “How come you only told me now?”

“No worries,” Xiao Man muttered. “We have your things fixed already and we already told your parents about this.”

I sighed in relief and we all went to Xiao Man’s car and left.

------

“Wow!” I exclaimed. “It’s so beautiful here!”

“I know!” Ya Tou replied in agreement.

“Now, let’s all go to our rooms and change!” Xiao Man gave us room keys and they all started walking inside a hotel.

I followed them and looked for my room number—965A. Ya Tou found her room first and then Xiao Man did. When only Xiao Xun and I were left, I asked her where my room was and she said that it might be at the other side of the lobby and she went in her room too, leaving me all alone.

I stared at the room numbers but still didn’t find it. I followed Xiao Xun’s advice and went to the other side. And right there, I found my room number. The door was bigger than the other doors and I felt really special.

I opened the door and found it empty. Or maybe it was just too big, I wasn’t sure. I placed the bag Ya Tou gave me on a nearby sofa and scanned the room.

Then, almost immediately, I heard someone playing the piano. I wasn’t familiar to the melody but it sounded really good. I tried to see who was playing but the grand piano was too big and it covered the person playing it.

I walked near the piano and saw someone unfamiliar.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“Hello, Ms. Gui.” He greeted me. “This way, please.” He swayed his arms and pointed to the door at his back.

I didn’t know what else to do so I just went to the door.

When I closed the door, another man started playing. I was sure I didn’t know him too because this time, he was only using a little keyboard. I eyed him, questioningly and he stopped playing.

“This ways, Ms.” He swayed his hand like the other man and pointed his arms to another door.

It was getting annoying but I still followed his direction.

When I opened the door, I saw a huge balcony. I looked around and found another grand piano. I heaved a sigh and realized someone was going to ask me to enter another door. Except there was no door anymore.

I stood in front of the door and gazed at the piano. Soon enough, a guy wearing a black mask and white tux came out. I was wrong. There was still another door at the other side.

The masked guy smiled happily and sat down. He started playing the same piece and I looked at him in awe. I concentrated on figuring out who he was and soon realized that it was…

Aaron.

“Aaron?” I asked.

It got darker, I figured the lights were turned off. But Aaron still kept playing the piano.

“Stop scaring me, moron!” I screamed.

I only heard him let out a teasing chuckle.

“Turn on the lights, Aaron!”

“Your wish, my command.” He said and stopped playing the piano. I could still remember him saying that before. When we were locked in a hotel room.

It got brighter, but the lights were different now. It was dim and really pretty

“What is this, Aaron?” I questioned him.

“Isn’t today supposed to be the expiration date of our deal?” He smiled and came near me. He held my hands and music started playing. “Can I have this dance?”

“Yes.” I couldn’t help but agree.

We danced without talking, just staring at each other’s faces. A few minutes later, I had the courage to speak.

“Why are you here? Who sent you here?”

“I missed you, Gui.” He said, not wanting to answer my question.

“Aaron!” I forced him to answer but he only grinned.

“I missed you.” He repeated.

I heaved a sigh and admitted, “I missed you too.”

“Thanks,” He said.

“For what?”

“So are you in love with someone else now?” He asked, avoiding my question again.

“No,” I shook my head.

“Good,” He grinned. “Does that mean we can be together now?”

I waited for the longest time just to hear him ask that so of course I agreed immediately. “But tell me first who sent you here.”

“I sent myself here.” He answered my question for the first time. “It was all just a plan.”

“Everything? Even when you didn’t come with Ah Ben and Ah Wei at the mall?”

He nodded his head in affirmation. “Actually, I was there. I was hiding; I wanted to see your reaction.”

“And the girls knew about it?”

“Yeah,” he nodded his head once again and I hit him slightly.

“You’re so mean! Did you know that I wanted to see you so badly that time?” I glared at him.

“Of course, I do. I saw your reaction remember?”

I kept quiet and didn’t answer.

“I’m sorry. Are you mad?” He questioned.

“No, I was just wondering… why didn’t you give up when I called the deal off?”

He laughed as if what I said was just a joke.

“With a love like ours, who would ever want to give up?”

He leaned closer and kissed me.

We shared a deep, passionate kiss for a few minutes.

And that was where our love took us.

At least for now.
