Chapter 9

First Date

It was Friday and the exam results were given. I got an A in almost all of my subjects except for Maths, I got a B. But I was still happy to know that I passed, with Wang Zi’s help. I ran to his classroom and looked for him. I saw him sitting on his desk and talking to his seatmate. I ran across the room and hugged him.

“I got a lot of A’s! Thanks to you!” I hugged him really tight.

He looked at me, surprised. And I realized my actions--I was hugging him in front of his classmates, including Xiao Man. I snickered and stepped back. People looked at us and someone clapped, it was Xiao Man. Of course it was her, I should’ve known. Soon enough, all of them applauded too. I felt my cheeks turning 100 shades of red redder. I was so embarrassed. But when Wang Zi laughed, I felt cool. I was starting to feel okay. And I felt my cheeks turning to its normal color.

“Thank you, Wang Zi.” I said. “I want to show you my gratitude but I don’t know how!”

He pouted his lips, “A kiss would be a great idea!”

I hit his shoulders lightly, “Other than that!”

Xiao Man approached us and asked, “Do you want to thank him? I have an idea,” She winked at us. “We’ll do the planning for you! You don’t have to worry.”

I hugged Xiao Man, “Thanks Xiao Man! You’re a great friend!”

“Of course I am.”

-----

It was Sunday and Xiao Man, Ya Tou, and Xiao Xun have been keeping all their plans from me. I wanted to be really nosy but Wang Zi forced me not to. “It wouldn’t be that great if you’d know what they’ve planned,” I can still hear his words in my head, repeating every ten minutes. Of course, I wanted to know their plan. But Wang Zi was right. I should just let them surprise the both of us.

“Baby, Wang Zi’s downstairs. Should I ask him to go up to your room?” My mom yelled from downstairs. My parents and Wang Zi have met already. He had dinner with us last Friday.

“Let him go up here!” I yelled back.

A few blinks later, someone knocked on my door, “Gui?”

“Come in, Wang Zi.” He entered the room and I gave him a peck on the cheek. “Those girls didn’t even tell us any clue, I don’t know what to wear!”

He sat down and said, “Oh, Xiao Xun called a few minutes before I left home. She said wear something formal.” He laughed. “I almost came here wearing jeans and a shirt.”

I eyed his suit, he looked handsome as always. “Why didn’t she call me? Xiao Xun is so unfair!” Really. Why?

“She asked me to tell you. Before I could ask where we are going, she already cut the line,” Wang Zi looked at my closet, carefully eyeing the dresses inside.

“So what should I wear?” I asked him.

He scanned the dresses and took out a violet halter dress. “I think this would look good on you.”

“I didn’t know my boyfriend has a great fashion sense!” I raised one eyebrow and he laughed.

---

Wang Zi and I went outside and saw a black car. It didn’t look like it was Wang Zi’s. “You have a new car?”

“Nope,” He answered. “I don’t know whose car that is.”

Soon enough, a guy wearing a suit went out of the car. “Hi Gui Gui!” He greeted me, I recognized it was Aaron’s friend, Ah Ben. “And nice to meet you!” He looked at Wang Zi. “Wang Zi, right?”

They shook hands and Wang Zi said, “Yes, I’m Wang Zi. You are?”

“I’m Ah Ben. Gui Gui’s friend and Xiao Man’s boyfriend.” He smiled.

“Why are you here?” I asked.

“I’ll be your chauffeur tonight,” He said, opening the door.

“Why?” I asked, again. What’s gonna happen? Why is he here?

“You’ll know” He closed the door. Sat on the driver's seat and said, “Soon.” And then, proceeded driving.

I was uneasy during the whole trip. Wang Zi noticed and he constantly asked if I was okay. I said I was okay every time but I really wasn’t. Something was fishy. And if Ah Ben’s involved, Aaron should be too. Help me, oh god!
----

Ah Wei was standing in front of the restaurant door. He looked really excited. He was wearing a waiter’s uniform. He opened the door for us and smiled contently. I saw Ya Tou at the front desk. She looked like a waitress asking people to sit down and wait for other customers to leave the restaurant. Except that the restaurant was empty.

She approached us, “Welcome guests!”

“Hi Ya Tou,” I greeted, grimly. “Table for two, please.”

“Oh sure Ms. Gui, table for four,” She smiled. What table for four?

She helped us come inside, and pointed a table—it was our table, she said. I saw 2 people sitting and talking. The girl was someone I don’t know but the guy was familiar but he wasn’t facing us so I couldn’t see him properly. As we walked nearer, I recognized the guy. It was Aaron. I should’ve known! Those girls! I turned back and started walking out but Wang Zi stopped me.

“Why?”

“A-a-a-aaron,” I stammered.

“Aaron? That guy?” He looked at him. “It’s okay. I’m with you.”

I turned back, and started approaching them again. We stood up in front of them and Aaron saw me.

“Gui Gui,” He muttered. “Hi!” And looked at Wang Zi.

“Good evening, I’m Wang Zi. Gui Gui’s boyfriend.” He said, coldly. It was my first time seeing his cold side.

“Hi Wang Zi!” He greeted and smiled. “This is Selina, my date.”

“Hi Wang Zi. Hi Gui Gui.” Selina greeted us, with a smile on her face. “I’m Selina. Aaron told me about your agreement with him. I hope your plan would succeed because I’d be happy to have Aaron as my boyfriend for real.”

Wang Zi looked at me. He looked puzzled. Aaron saw Wang Zi’s expression and asked, “Oh, you don’t know about the agreement?”

“No, I don’t.”

“We agreed to date other people and try to forget each other,” Aaron said.

I winced as Aaron finished his sentence. I looked at Wang Zi, he looked mad. I should’ve told him sooner!
-----

“Why did you tell him, Aaron?” I hissed. “I was going to tell him! Why should you?” Wang Zi looked mad the whole time and when we were done eating, he excused himself to use the men’s room.

“I didn’t know,” Aaron reasoned. “It would be rude not to answer him. So is he your boyfriend?”

“But still!” I exclaimed. “Yes, he is.”

Wang Zi came back and said, “Shall we go now, Gui?” I looked at him. “It’s getting late.” He smiled, or at least tried to.

“Okay,” I agreed. “Bye Selina, bye Aaron.”
