Chapter 11

search for ah nin

[Shanghai, Apartment Tower]

"Excuse me, may I ask where you guys are going?" the receptionist questions Nim Chi (Nancy Sit), Joey (Bernice Liu), Ah Sing (Hawick Lau), and Fiona (Sherming Yiu). "I don't recall seeing you before."

"We're here to visit my son."

"Name? What floor and room?"

"My son is Kam Nin (Frankie Lam). He lives in house 3A."

The receptionist scratches his beard. "Kam Nin... I don't recall this name. Let me look his information up." He checks the hotel's computer database. "House 3A currently belongs to a Miss Cheung and I cannot find a 'Kam Nin.' Are you guys sure he lives in this apartment building?"

"I'm positive. I visited here a few times in the past."

"Maybe he moved out before telling you guys?"

"Can you check if perhaps he vacated the room and when?"

"Sure. Ah ha! I finally found his file. It says that he moved out a few months ago!"

"Do you have any idea where he went?" The receptionist shakes his head. "Thank you anyway." Nim Chi turns to the others, "Let's go." As they are walking out of the building, Nim Chi's heart pounds in her chest. "How could Ah Nin have moved without informing me?”

"Ma Chi, don't worry! Maybe he was too busy and forgot to inform us. Perhaps he just moved to a better place," Ah Sing says.

"This isn't like him. Yes, he can be soaked up in his work at times, but he would never forget to tell us something this important! Where are we to look for him now?"

"His workplace!" Joey exclaims.

"Right, let's go."

["F&B" Company]

"Hi, we're looking for Mr. Kam Nin."

The secretary (Natalie Tong) apologizes, "You mean Chris? If you had come earlier, you could have seen him. He's gone out for some business. He should be back soon though. You can sit over there and wait." She points to a set of chairs and sofa to the side.

"Ma Chi, we'll see him soon," Ah Sing smiles.

Joey's heart flutters. She watches earnestly as the clock ticks away. To her, time never passed by so slowly before.

"Ah Sing, we've been waiting for over an hour now. Let's leave and come back later," Fiona whispers.

"We can't. Ma Chi won't rest assured until she sees Ah Nin."

Joey walks over to the secretary. "Miss, can you please call Chris and tell him that his family is waiting for him?"

The secretary blinks at her. "You're his family?" She lowers her voice, "Funny... he never mentioned this before." She lifts her head back up and cheerfully announces that she would call him. Noticing that Joey is still hovering over her, she smiles, "You can sit back down. I'm his personal secretary. I think I can handle a little phone call!" When Joey sits down, she dials his cell phone number. "Hello, Chris? Haha. Your relationship has gotten this close that you two have each other cell phones? Right, right. Anyways, is he there? He went to buy you a drink? Ok, well, when he comes back, tell him that his family is waiting to see him." She beckons for Joey. "I called and he should be back soon."

Hour after hour passed and still Ah Nin didn't come back to the office.

Joey walks back to the secretary and asks her, "How come Chris hasn't returned yet?"

She shrugs. "I called him. I guess he's busy or something."

"Could you call him again and tell him that his 'Joey' is waiting for him?"

"All right."

5:00 PM came and the "F&B" employees began to leave and yet, Ah Nin wasn't there. The secretary walks over to them. "You guys sure have a lot of patience! I'm sorry, but I don't think that Chris will be returning today. Please come back tomorrow. I'll be sure to tell him first thing in the morning when he arrives."

"Auntie Chi, what are we to do?" Joey asks.

"There's nothing we can do but leave. We'll come back tomorrow."

"Let's go have a big dinner! There are a lot of sights to see as well!" Ah Sing proclaims.

Joey grins weakly, "You guys go ahead. I'll join later. I want to go walk around for some fresh air. All of the waiting made me sick!"

"You can't, Joey. I promised your father that I'd watch you."

"Auntie Chi, I'm a big girl! Nothing will happen."

Nim Chi wants to say that they'll join her, but the loud grumbling of her stomach made her say, "All right. We'll call you when we find a nice restaurant and give you the directions."

Joey smiles before walking away. She finds a vacant bench in the park and sits down. She looks up at the skies. "God, why do you have to keep playing with me? I traveled all the way to Shanghai and yet you won't let me see Chris easily? Why? Did something happen to him today?" She begins to worry and out of despair, hot tears stream down her cheeks. She reaches into her purse for a tissue. Flustered because she can't find it, she throws her purse onto the ground. "Even you want to mess with me!" Joey bends down to retrieve her things.

She feels a tap on her shoulder. "Miss, I believe this is yours," a familiar voice says.

Joey looks back and is shocked. She rises with her mouth agape. Happy tears roll down her face. Ah Nin was standing before her eyes! She hugs him tightly and sobs, "Chris! I'm so happy to finally have found you! You don't know how long I've waited for you. Oh, god! There's just so much that I want to tell you. But it doesn't matter. Now that I have you again, we'll have all the time in the world to talk." She stops speaking when she notices that Ah Nin's arms are not holding her. In fact, he looks uncomfortable and confused.

"Miss," Ah Nin calls, "can you please get off me?"

Joey blinks as she backs off. "What?"

"Thank you." He begins to walk away.

Joey is stunned. "Chris! Wait!"

"Do I know you?" he questions.

Joey is about to speak when she sees a girl (Kenix Kwok) approaching Ah Nin. The girl runs to Ah Nin's side and loops her arm into his. "Chris! There you are!" she leans on Ah Nin as the two walk away engaged in happy conversation.

The world suddenly becomes eerily quiet for Joey. Everything was moving forward at the speed of light, but she could only stand there, unable to move nor to comprehend what just happened. "Chris..." Joey whispers as he becomes a mere blur in the horizon. Tears continue to flow as if Joey's eyes were rivers.
