Chapter 23

quirky family members

[Kam Apartment Rooftop]

Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) awakens after Gam (Louis Yuen) throws a cup of water in his face. "What's going on?" he demands. He tries to move but notices that he's been tied down to a chair with a rope! "Where am I? Why did you people tie me up? What do you want?"

"Spirit inhabiting Kam Nin, listen up," Gam says in a serious tone.

"Uncle, what are you doing?" Ah Nin asks.

"Uncle Gam, he knows who you are!" Ah Yuet (Michael Tse) whispers.

"This was in my calculations. Spirits can access the biological Internet these days and know everything!"

"Ah Yuet, let me out!" Ah Nin yells.

"Uncle, big brother seems to be normal! I think you're just making up nonsense," Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) says.

"Where is Ma Chi?"

"We've sent her out on some errands. You may be able to deceive her because she's old and dumb, but we're sharp and quick. Spirit, I demand you to leave Kam Nin's body now and let him return to us!"

"Uncle, you're nuts!"

"What's this?" Gam holds a paper with a blot of ink.

"A blot of ink."

"Who won 'Best Actress' at TVB's 2004 anniversary?"

"The person who deserved it or who got it?"

"The winner."

"Yuk Ying got it, but Lady Yu Fei should have received it."

"Wrong. The winner was Gigi Lai."

"They're the same person! What's with all these silly questions uncle?"

"You seem to be a wise spirit, knowing everything. I'll have to take this to the next level. Ah Yat, hand me the garlic mixture. Ghosts are terrified of these."

"I thought only vampires are scared of garlic!"

"Ah Nin has been overseas, so he might be possessed by a vampire."

"Um... big brother has been in Shanghai."

"Really? Then who's the one that was overseas?"

"I was," Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) announces as he reaches the rooftop, "God, don't tell me you think Ah Nin's been possessed by a vampire! You guys tied me up the last time I came back because you thought I had been bitten by a vampire and was turning into one!" Ah Sing sees the all too familiar sight and shakes his head, "You guys are repeating your old absurd tricks again!"

Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) is angry when she reaches the rooftop. "You people sent everyone home, sent me out to buy snacks, and tied Ah Nin up for something so ridiculous?" She quickly unties Ah Nin. "Apologize!"

"Last time you did this with us when you thought Ah Sing was possessed!"

"Because last time there was circumstantial evidence! Ah Nin is perfectly fine. He just doesn't have his memories!"

"That's what I said, Ma Chi, but uncle kept on insisting that people with amnesia are actually possessed by ghosts!" Ah Yuet says.

"Ridiculous! Who said that?"

"An 'expert'."

Nim Chi folds her arms, "And who's that Ah Gam?"

"Doctor... Lau."

"Who?"

"Me!" Gam quickly dashes away.

"Gam Gam! Wait for me!" Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) runs after him.

Nim Chi shakes her head, "I'm sorry, Ah Nin. Your uncle is always acting recklessly like that!"

"Yeah, I know. Even though he can be impossible at times, he's not a bad person."

"Big brother, you seem to be normal. I thought you had amnesia. How come you remember us and our names?"

"Ma Chi only repeated the information to me a million times during our trip home. How can I not remember?" Ah Nin laughs.

"Ah Nin, you seem to be improving every second!" Nim Chi cheerfully beams.

Ah Lo raises her eyebrow, "Is Ah Nin really starting to remember or is he just memorizing facts that mother-in-law told him?"

Ah Nin shrugs, "I'm not quite sure."

"Ma Chi, I think you should stop telling Ah Nin about his past because it's hard to differentiate whether he's actually starting to remember or if he's just memorizing and 'remembering' stories about the past," Ah Yat suggests.

"Well don't you want him to remember you quickly as well?"

They all nod, "But if we tell him about the past, we're not helping him. We're just forming his memories according to what we say. Do you want a son that's been brainwashed and manipulated? No, right? Then just let things flow naturally and let him remember by himself."

Nim Chi is amazed, "Since when did you all become so wise?"

"Since we started watching that new psychological drama on TV. Oh no... it's on!" They all run downstairs to watch it.

Nim Chi laughs.

"Our family is quite... eccentric," Ah Nin comments.

"They are, but I'm sure you'll get used to them."

"Hopefully..."

"Did they scare you tonight?"

"With the whole tying me up and thinking I was possessed? Oh no, I'm used to that."

"Really?"

Ah Nin laughs, "I'm just kidding!" Just as he had remembered, his mother was still as foolish and gullible as she was in the past. "Ma Chi, you should head downstairs. It's late. I want to stay up here and soak in the night air."

"All right," she smiles, "I'll leave to give you some private time."

"So, that's my family..." Ah Nin says halfheartedly. Although they're harmless, he finds them quite troublesome with their nonsensical antics and noise. Since he stepped into the house, they had not stopped talking. He missed the tranquility of Rose's (Kenix Kwok) house. "Will I get used to them?" Ah Nin sighs. He was unsure. Somewhere, deep in his fuzzy memories though, he thinks he recalls being used to the noise and their wacky behavior.
