Chapter 56

bribing a client

["Ka Yan" Company, Meeting Office]

"Ka Yan" company's boss, secretary, three Merchandising Managers, three fashion designers, two managers, two accountants, two office girls, and one office boy sat together in one large, oval desk in the company's meeting office. Wong Sheung (Lau Dan) had called the meeting abruptly that day.

"I can't believe it! Today is my first day back at work and already Mr. Wong calls a meeting," Ah Lo (Bondy Chiu) complains into Ah Yuet's (Michael Tse) ears, which were slightly deaf from all of the loud crying by Fu jai and Gwai mui. Ah Yuet nods his head as if he understands.

Black clouds seemed to cover Wong Sheung's face. For some reason, business for "Ka Yan" had gone down again. He clears his throat and begins, "As you all know, our business hasn't been very ideal. Fortunately, I have contacted a new client for the company. He is from a company in America who's interested in making a contract with our company for a new Asian-styled line of clothing that they're investing in. He's arriving in Hong Kong tomorrow and wants to come see our company the next day."

Man Gwai Fei (Stephanie Che) claps her hands, "That's great!"

"Mr. Wong, is there anything we have to do to prepare for this new business deal?" Ah Lam (Linda Chung) asks.

"Our company's motto is to always place the client first," Wong Sheung says.

Ah Nin (Frankie Lam) nods his head, "Yes."

"Well," Wong Sheung continues, "This particular client is very picky. He refuses to work with a company that doesn't appeal to him. Regardless of the quality of the company's work, if the atmosphere is not fitting, he will not do business."

"Wow. How can we fire all of the employees and hire new ones in time? Every one of our current employees is so lazy!" Gwai Fei comments.

Ah Lam frowns, "If what we have to offer is good, then that should be what the client should look at."

"No fears, though," Wong Sheung tries to convince everyone, "I've learned that this client loves Christmas."

"Oh!" Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) exclaims, "So you want us to give him lots of Christmas presents?"

Gam (Louis Yuen) chides, "Einstein! If he's going to bring in big business for us, what makes you think he would want petty presents?"

"Christmas is all about presents..." Ying Gei quietly says.

Wong Sheung shakes his head, "No, no. If our company can convey that we love Christmas as much as he does, then I'm sure we'll get the deal."

"So what do you want us to do?" Ah Nin asks.

"The whole company must be decorated with Christmas ornaments and accessories!" Wong Sheung orders.

"Our company is already decorated for the holidays!" Ah Lam reports.

"It's not good enough. Our decorations are outdated and old! What will the client think? He will think we only celebrate Christmas shallowly! We must replace everything with new accessories and decorations. Also, we will place a big Christmas tree right inside of the main doors and have the most gorgeous ornaments," Wong Sheung explains. "Our company must be glowing with Christmas spirit!"

"Who doesn't celebrate Christmas for shallow reasons these days? It's all about the money and gifts, isn't that right?" Gam laughs.

"Where are we going to get the money and time to redecorate the office?" Ah Nin asks.

"You will all have to work a little harder until the client comes the day after tomorrow," Wong Sheung replies.

"And the money?" Ah Lam inquires.

"The company will pay for it, right, Mr. Wong?" Gwai Fei questions.

Wong Sheung nods his head, "Although it will be costly, if the deal goes through, everything will be good. Get to work everyone!"

[Ah Lam's Office]

Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) knocks on Ah Lam's office door. "Come in!" Ah Lam shouts from inside.

Ah Sing lets himself in and announces, as he places some designs on her desk, "Here are the designs for XYZ company."

"All right. You can go out now," Ah Lam says.

Ah Sing notices that Ah Lam seemed to be acting more strangely than usual.

"Why are you still standing there? I told you to leave," Ah Lam orders.

"Why do you look so stressed?" Ah Sing asks.

"It's none of your business. Lau Ka Sing, we are strictly co-workers. I go my own way and you go your own way. We only interact under business-related circumstances. Please leave me alone," Ah Lam sighs.

"You should be happy. Mr. Wong got the company a big deal."

Ah Lam snickers, "A big deal? Who says it was guaranteed? So what if our company is redecorated to create a Christmas feel? Who says that will give us the deal? What if it all goes to waste?"

Ah Sing smirks, "I thought you would do anything to get a deal through since you love money so much."

Ah Lam stands up and looks Ah Sing in the eyes; "Any business deals that go through under me are done because I offer the best for the client. I don't like using cheap techniques or to bribe clients to get a deal." She walks out of her office, leaving Ah Sing stunned.
