Chapter 61

seedling over seed

[Shopping Centre]

It was a typical, mundane afternoon the day Ying Gei (Yvonne Lam) and Sa Sa (Kingdom Yuen) held their monthly sisterly meeting. Since the two had been married, they had very little time to spend together. As a result, they decided that the two would spend one day each month together to continue their strong sisterly bond and be up-to-date with the other's life. The two had been sisters since high school and although they suffered from a huge misunderstanding for a while, they both knew that the other was their true friend.

"Everything's so expensive!" Sa Sa exclaims as she holds up a dress and points to the price tag.

Ying Gei laughs, "You have to spend money to look good!" She was a sucker for name brands and loved to look fashionable.

"I'd rather go to the appliance store to find something useful around the house!" Sa Sa answered. She never failed to occupy herself with housework. She had taken care of the Kam family apartment along with helping to raise Ah Nin, Ah Yuet, and Ah Yat. In true essence, Sa Sa was born to be a housewife. Had she not married with 11th brother (Lee Kwok Lun), it was questionable whether or not the fear that she would die old and alone in the apartment would come true.

"Sa Sa, you should think of yourself more often!" Ying Gei urges.

"What do you mean?" Sa Sa holds up a shopping bag, "I bought something for me!"

"No, no no," Ying Gei shakes her finger back and forth, "Buying from the clearance rack is not treating yourself."

"What's so shameful about it? There are a lot of people who do that too! Besides, I can't afford to waste money."

"Why? You haven't been frivolous in years! All you think about is your husband and family... it's never you."

Sa Sa scratches her stomach, "Well..." She grabs Ying Gei's hand and leads her to a baby store.

"Aren't these cute?" Sa Sa gushes over the miniature toddler outfits. The clothes were reminiscent of adult-sized clothing that had been accidentally shrunk in the wash. Ying Gei blushes remembering the first time she did laundry and accidentally shrunk all of her clothes.

"Look! Oh my god, they are so adorable! I want to buy them all!" Sa Sa continues running around the store grabbing outfits.

Ying Gei gasps, "You touched your tummy before! Now you're buying baby clothes! Do you have 'it?'"

"'It?'" Sa Sa raises an eyebrow.

"You're pregnant, aren't you?" Ying Gei screams.

All of the people in the store turn around to look at them.

Ying Gei claps and cheers, "My good sister is pregnant!"

Sa Sa is embarrassed at the forced claps. She puts the outfits back and runs out of the store.

"Sa Sa, what's wrong?"

"Aiya! How could you do that back then?"

"It's good to spread your happiness around! No need to keep it all to yourself!" Ying Gei smiles at Sa Sa's stomach.

"I'm not pregnant!" Sa Sa protests.

"So then why...?"

[Restaurant]

"Actually," Sa Sa confesses, "Dai Kei and I are going to have a child."

"So you are pregnant?"

Sa Sa shakes her head.

"Oh my god! Did 11th brother cheat on you so now you have to raise the child of the mistress?"

"No! Dai Kei would never do that."

Ying Gei is extremely confused, "Then how are you having a child with 11th brother?"

Sa Sa places some photographs of children on the table. "Look at these."

"Wow, these children look pitiful. Whose are they?"

"They're orphans."

"How sad!"

Sa Sa nods, "Exactly."

Ying Gei pulls money out of her purse, "Here's a little donation for these poor children."

Sa Sa blinks, "What?"

"I thought you showed me these pictures because these children need money."

"They don't need money. They need love."

"Love can't be purchased!"

"They need a family," Sa Sa rolls her eyes and places what she meant into simpler terms.

"Oh! Do you want me to help you find them family?"

"No. I'm choosing one of them to adopt," Sa Sa explains.

"Are you? Why?"

"It's meaningful," Sa Sa beams.

"It is. But don't you feel weird raising other people's children?"

"I raised Ah Nin, Ah Yuet, and Ah Yat. They were not my children. Yet, I love them all so dearly. How can I not love another child who isn't mine?"

"They're related to you by blood, though!" Ying Gei corrects.

"True, but I love children."

"Why don't you and 11th brother have your own?"

"Dai Kei already has Ah Hong, who is twenty-seven already. He and I aren't young anymore."

"That doesn't mean you can't try to have your own child!"

Sa Sa embraces Ying Gei's hands, "You have to understand. You and I are aging. We're over forty already. It's no longer practical or safe for the baby if we become pregnant. Think of all the risks to you and the baby. When your child is twenty, you'll be over sixty... that is, if you live that long."

Ying Gei is speechless with mixed thoughts.

"Adoption is the only way to go if we want to have a child. First, we'll be saving another soul from growing up without parents and a warm, loving family. Why add another number to the statistics of modern people who don't have a complete family? Secondly, we'll save on diaper, milk, and we won't go deaf from a baby's crying. Third, we can watch them grow up and won't be too old to enjoy their wedding and grandchildren," Sa Sa says.

"I never thought of that," Ying Gei comments.

"You and Gam have been trying for over a year to have a child."

Ying Gei weakly nods her head and looks down at the floor, "I don't know whose fault it is."

"Why don't you adopt?"

"I'm afraid Gam Gam would not like it."

"He was adopted too."

"That's true."

Sa Sa pats Ying Gei on the shoulder, "Just something for you to think about. Now, help me choose who I should adopt!"

Ying Gei's eyes sparkle. In that moment, Sa Sa had planted a seed of an idea into her head. She couldn't wait to tell Gam (Louis Yuen) about it.
