Chapter 64

genuine happiness

["Ka Yan" Company]

Wong Sheung (Lau Dan) was extremely happy these days because of "Ka Yan"'s sudden climb back to prosperity.

"Compared to last month, our company's business has risen nearly 50%!" Wong Sheung announces. "It is all thanks to everyone's hard work! Chris has brought in several contracts from the mainland, Michelle has gotten contracts from all over Hong Kong and a few overseas, and Athena has gotten a couple as well. Everyone will get bonuses and I'm planning on taking the entire company on a four-day trip to Thailand!"

Everyone in "Ka Yan" claps and cheers.

[Ah Lam's Office]

Ah Lam (Linda Chung) smiled from ear-to-ear thinking about how good business was. It was surprising how things had turned around after "Ka Yan"'s big contract with Mr. Myers was signed. "Well," Ah Lam thinks, "It's because we offer the best for our clients."

She was working on another proposal when her phone rings.

"Hello, Michelle Hung of 'Ka Yan' company speaking," she answers.

The secretary on the other line replies, "Yes, this is Mr. Kwok's, of 'Kwok Corporation,' secretary, Belle."

"What can I do for you?"

"Mr. Kwok would like to make an appointment with you. He's interested in doing business with your company."

"That's great. What type of clothing is he interested in?"

Ah Lam and the secretary continued to talk until preliminary points were made and a date for the meeting was set. Ah Lam is flowing with happiness because business was coming to "Ka Yan" as if it was a gold mine that everyone wanted to cash in on.

[Main Interior]

Ah Lam walks out of her office to give Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) some orders.

"Lau Ka Sing," Ah Lam beckons.

Ah Sing looks up from his desk. He had been working on a design, "Yes, Ah Lam?"

"I told you to call me Michelle or Miss Hung! We're not that close."

"What is it that you would like me to do? I'm already working hard on this design."

"I can see that. It looks quite nice. Anyways, I've just received another interested client. I need you to design some summer outfits."

"Summer? It's the end of January for God's sake!"

Ah Lam shrugs, "That's what the client wants. I assume he wants to make an early investment. He wants summer clothing... something light, fun, and attractive. Their company is big on exploiting the 'fun' factor."

"All right," Ah Sing answers.

Ah Lam was about to head back into her office when Ah Sing grabs her hand.

"Get off of me!" Ah Lam hisses.

"Ah Lam, I have a question for you."

"Is it related to business?"

"No."

Ah Lam shakes off his hand, "Then I'm not free or interested in what you have to say."

Ah Sing watches Ah Lam slam the door to her office in his face.

[Sze Family Mansion]

Ah San (Steven Ma) finally had a free evening that day. For the first time in weeks, Ah San didn't have a dinner or business appointment with a client. Ah Lam was so excited that she actually went into the kitchen to help their chef prepare dinner.

Shortly after they were married, Ah Lam had decided to take a cooking class. She remembers how horrible she and Ah San were when they tried to cook a meal that time when they had to pretend to be dating and living together. She laughs thinking about how hectic that situation was. The food turned out to be inedible and the only thing that was eatable was the greens, and there were only two leaves! In the end, the two had to resort to eating canned food.

Ah Lam checks her cabinet for a can of fried fish with black beans. To her dismay, there wasn't a can in the cabinet. She decides that she was going to go out to buy a can so that Ah San could relive the moment that she had just recalled.

[Dining Table]

Every night at the Sze mansion, the dinner was elaborate. There were lots of food, but rarely anyone to eat it all. Ah Lam was usually alone at dinner. Because of this, she had decided to invite all of the maids and workers in the house to eat dinner with her on a daily basis. Tonight, however, Ah Lam was going to have dinner with Ah San, so she apologized to her maids and workers.

"Honey! I'm home," Ah San enters the house with a big smile.

"Ricky!" Ah Lam calls.

Ah San blinks, "Ricky?"

"Well, have you never watched 'I Love Lucy?' When Ricky comes home, he always calls out to Lucy 'Honey, I'm home' in every episode."

Ah San laughs, "That's right! Lucy! What have you done?"

Ah Lam giggles as she walks Ah San over to the dining table.

"You seemed really happy tonight," Ah Lam comments.

"It's the first dinner I'm spending with my wife in awhile, of course I'm thrilled!"

"Enjoy. I took part in preparing the dinner today because I knew you were going to be home."

"Really? I'll have to keep my phone nearby so I can call the emergency room in case I get poisoned!"

Ah Lam playfully hits Ah San.

"Let me see..." Ah San grabs a piece of fried fish with black beans. He chews and savors the taste in his mouth. "This tastes familiar."

Ah Lam runs to the kitchen and fetches a can of fried fish with black beans, "Don't you remember?"

Ah San thinks back, "Oh! I remember now."

"It was our first dinner together and we had fried fish with black bean."

"We were horrible cookers! This was the only thing that we could eat. Luckily, Uncle Sau had a can in the cabinet!"

Ah Lam nods and laughs.

"Don't tell me this was the dish that you helped in preparing."

"I went out to buy it especially because we didn't have any at home. Isn't that a big enough sacrifice from Mrs. Sze?" Ah Lam teases.

Ah San answers, "Good enough, but I guess we wasted money paying for your cooking classes!"

Ah Lam points to a stir-fried dish, "Actually, I cooked this one."

"Did you?" He leans towards Ah Lam and picks up a green from her shirt, "Well, I have no reason to doubt you now!"

"Darn. It's too bad you weren't home otherwise I could have flipped a green onto your head like last time!"

Ah Lam and Ah San enjoyed the rest of the evening in pleasant conversation and laughter. Ah Lam's personal maid (Joyce Tang) smiles in the other room listening to how happy Ah Lam sounded. It had been a long time since she last heard such genuine happiness coming from Ah Lam.
