Chapter 67

stars and stripes

[Car]

Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) drove Fiona (Sherming Yiu) home that day after work.

"Do you want to go eat out before we go home?" Ah Sing asks.

"I thought we're going to Michelle's surprise birthday party today?" Fiona questions.

"I think the party's called off," Ah Sing answers.

"Why? What happened?"

"She ran away and Ivan can't find her."

"Are you serious?"

Ah Sing nods, "Ivan was really worried about her."

"So that's why she was there..." Fiona says in a hushed tone realizing that Ah Lam had lied to her.

"What was that?"

Fiona decides to tell Ah Sing about Ah Lam, "Actually, Michelle's been in the pool all day."

"What?"

"She's been swimming in the pool. I think she's still in there."

"Are you serious?" Ah Sing signals to the left so that he can turn around and drive back to the swimming centre.

[Swimming Centre]

"How come we came back here?" Fiona asks.

"What's a party without its main guest?" Ah Sing unfastens his seat belt and gets out of the car. "Fiona, you stay here."

"Okay. Don't be too long."

After running around the swimming centre, Ah Sing finally found the pool where Ah Lam was in.

"Ah Lam?"

"Lau Ka Sing! What are you doing here?"

"My wife said that you were here."

"Why are you here?"

"Everyone's looking for you. Why did you run off like that?"

"I called back to the company and told you guys not to worry. I'm perfectly fine!"

"'Perfectly fine?'" Ah Sing scoffs, "This isn't like the Ah Lam that I know, to terminate a business contract and run away without telling anyone anything. How can the Ah Lam that I know be so irresponsible and reckless?"

"Lau Ka Sing, I told you many times to not worry about me!" Ah Lam tries to swim away, but Ah Sing walks around the pool in concurrence with her swimming strokes. "Lau Ka Sing! Stop following me!"

"Ah Lam, don't you get tired of calling my full name all of the time?"

"What do you want?"

"I want you to tell me what's wrong."

"It's none of your business what's wrong!"

"Ah Lam, I'm worried about you."

"I don't need you to be worried. I'm a big person. I can handle everything on my own."

"If so, you wouldn't have spent the entire day at the pool. The last time you did this was before an examination during high school. You were so worried that I had to swim with you the entire day just so that you'd be calm and believe that you would do well."

Ah Lam doesn't say anything and looks away.

"You remember that, don't you?" Ah Sing asks.

"Lau Ka Sing, you're not talking to the same person that you knew in the past."

"I believe I am. Ah Lam, stop pretending. I know about your 'twenty-eight' scare. That's why you acted the way you did when we broke up."

Ah Lam decides to swim across the pool so that Ah Sing couldn't follow her. To her surprise, he jumps into the pool and swims after her.

"Are you crazy?" Ah Lam demands.

"I'm worried... for a friend."

Ah Lam pushes him away, "We're not friends. How many times do I have to tell you that?"

"You can confide in me... just like you did in the past."

"The past has fled and disappeared. We're in the present now. It's not the same."

Ah Sing sighs, "Why won't you open up?"

"Because I have nothing to share... especially with you!"

"It has something to do with Ivan and our company's business, doesn't it?"

Ah Lam doesn't say anything.

"Look, I don't know what happened, but I can tell you that Ivan is very worried about you."

"Why do you say that?"

"He ran all around Hong Kong looking for you."

Ah Lam gives a weak reply of "Oh."

Ah Sing swims away from Ah Lam to the edge of the pool so that he can climb out. "In any case, you should come out. Everyone is worried about you and we're all waiting for you to come home. Besides, if you keep staying in the water, you'll become as wrinkled as a prune! Now, does the Hung Bak Lam who thinks so highly of herself want to look like a prune? Also, the Ah Lam that I know isn't such a coward. She wouldn't hide from her problems or whatever it is that's bothering her." Ah Sing leaves the room without another word.

[Car]

"Ah Sing!" Fiona is startled. "Why are you all wet? You need to dry yourself otherwise you'll catch a cold!"

"Driving naked is a crime," Ah Sing laughs. "It's okay."

Fiona takes out her towel from her bag and tries to pat some of the water from Ah Sing. Ah Sing looks into the swimming centre and wonders if Ah Lam was still in the pool or whether she had gotten out and was preparing to head home.

Today (July 4) is the US's "Independence Day." Hence, it's all about the "stars and stripes" (the US flag). Ironically, this chapter was also about the "stars and stripes" because the main focus was Ah Sing and Ah Lam. "Sing" means "star" while "hung bak lam" sounds like "red white blue." When you put stars with red, white, and blue, what do you get? That's right! The good old American flag with its stars and stripes. =D Happy July 4th everyone! (By the way, don't get too used to the double updates because tomorrow we'll be returning to the one chapter update a day!)
