Chapter 69

keeping the key

[Sze Family Mansion, Ah San & Ah Lam's Bedroom]

Ah Lam (Linda Chung) and Ah San (Steven Ma) cuddle under their warm sheets in their king-sized bed. Ah Lam looks up and gazes at Ah San's face and gives him a full-toothed grin. "Thank you for the wonderful birthday. It's been so long since we've felt so close and spent so much time together."

"Don't you worry," Ah San assures, "This will happen more often. I've decided that I'll make it work. I'll spend every dinner with you."

"Really?"

Ah San gives a sincere smile, "Yes."

"Ivan, I have something to confess."

"What is it?"

"Actually, I'm going away tomorrow."

"What! Why?"

"Now that I've realized that many of the contracts that I made for 'Ka Yan' over the past few months were insincere, I have to try harder to rebuild the company and get clients that actually want to work with our company. Ah Sing and I are going to Japan for a few days to talk with a company there."

"I'll join you."

"Don't be silly! It's not as if I'm going to Japan for a vacation. We'll be working. Besides, you have your company to worry about. You've sacrificed a week to plan my party and I really appreciate that, but now it's time that we get back to work."

"So we're returning to the way we were before?"

"No! You'll have to keep your promise to join me at dinner every night starting from the night that I return."

Ah San laughs, "All right."

Ah Lam turns off the lamps on their night table, "It's getting late. Let's go to bed."

"Michelle, it's almost morning!"

"Are you serious?"

"Yeah! We haven't slept all night!"

[Hong Kong International Airport]

"Big big brother, I hope you'll return on time this time," Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) says.

"What are you talking about?"

"When you went away to Germany on a business trip, you didn't come back for months! Hope you don't disappear again," Ah Yat answers.

"It's because I disappeared that I met Fiona," Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) gives her a light kiss.

Fiona wants to cry, "Ah Sing, I really don't want to part with you."

"It's okay! You have Ma Chi and everyone. You'll be fine. I'm only going to be gone for a few days. Nothing will happen."

Fiona holds on to Ah Sing tightly, "Ah Sing. Be safe. I'll be waiting for you."

"Michelle, make sure you call everyday," Ah San reminds her.

"Me? What about you?" Ah Lam teases.

"I meant we'll both call each other every day."

Ah Lam smiles, "That's much better."

"Ah Sing, I wish you a good trip and a successful business contract," Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) gives her blessings.

"Where there's Ah Lam, success will be nearby," Ah Sing flashes a smile at Ah Lam.

She responds with another smile and, "With Ah Sing's designs, success will be a little closer."

"Wow. No more arguing between you guys?" Ah Yat is surprised.

"We're adults," Ah Lam winks her right eye, "There's no such thing as childish bickering between us. Of course, one of us may act childish."

"Excuse Ah Lam. She thinks she's still twenty instead of thirty," Ah Sing whispers jokingly to his family.

The speakers announce that the flight to Japan was now boarding. Ah Lam and Ah Sing grab their bags and wave goodbye to their family members.

[Airplane]

Ah Sing and Ah Lam were seated next to each other on the plane.

"Ah Sing, thanks again," is the first sentence that came out of Ah Lam's mouth after the two were situated in their seats.

"It's no problem at all."

"Without your help, I think I might still be in the pool!"

Ah Sing observes Ah Lam's skin, "You're so wrinkled! If people didn't know, they would think that you're forty instead of thirty!"

Ah Lam hits Ah Sing playfully.

"However, you still look pretty." Ah Sing lets out a deep breath of air, "This feels like old times."

"It does."

"We're friends again, right?"

"Yes."

"I don't think we ever truly hated each other, do you?"

"No."

"Then why do you suppose we argued all the time in the past after what happened between us?"

"You could say that it was because I was afraid that you might go back to me."

"Meaning dating-wise?"

Ah Lam nods her head, "An act has to carry until it finishes."

"So you're not really money-hungry or cold-hearted?"

"What do you think?" Ah Lam says in a stern voice.

"Of course not. The Ah Lam that I grew up with is a sweet girl." Ah Sing extends his pinky finger, "Friends?"

Ah Lam wraps her pinky around his, "Friends."

"Thank god we're not enemies anymore. I was getting tired of arguing with you!"

Although Ah Sing and Ah Lam were friends again, there was an unmentioned tension that they both felt. They wondered whether or not things would have been different had Ah Sing not gone to Germany and married with Fiona and Ah Lam had not met Ah San. Would they have gotten back together? Do they still have feelings for one another? How different would things have been? Ah Lam and Ah Sing give a quick glance at one another. They decided that it was best to keep these questions in their heart, locked away along with their feelings of romance from their past dating. Despite these sensitive issues that they desired to hide, they both kept the key to the lock tightly wrapped in the palm of their hand, instead of throwing it away.
