"Fiona, you look much better today!" Nim Chi (Nancy Sit) praises.
"Thanks." Fiona (Sherming Yiu) continues in a hushed tone, "Thanks to the fact that I left your room."
"Where did you go? I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and realized you weren't there."
"You noticed?"
"Of course. This is an ex-policewoman you're talking to! I'm highly observant."
"And highly unbearable," Fiona thinks.
"Where did you go?" Nim Chi asks again.
Fiona decides to be honest and candidly says, "Mother-in-law, you have a snoring and kicking problem."
"What?"
"I couldn't sleep because you snored too loudly and you kept strangling me and finally kicked me off of the bed!"
"Are you serious big big sister-in-law?" Ah Yat (Joyce Chen) asks.
Fiona nods her head seriously, "Yes!"
"That's ridiculous!" Nim Chi tries to laugh it off.
Sa Sa (Kingdom Yuen) speaks up, "It's true! Sister-in-law, you're just unbearable when it comes to sleeping."
Nim Chi thinks to herself, "Do I really have such a problem?"
[Streets]
Work had concluded for the day at the swimming center for Fiona. She decided to walk around because it would be pointless to head home early. Unbeknown to her, some people were watching her in the shadows. They followed every footstep that she walked.
"That's the princess!" One of them said.
"Are you sure?" Another asked.
"I'm positive. I've seen her a few times around the palace," a third answered.
"Let's keep following her," a fourth insisted.
Fiona continues walking in and out of stores looking at novelties without a care in the world.
[Kam Family Apartment, Kitchen]
"Fiona, are you going to sleep in my room again tonight?" Nim Chi asks her as the two finish the final dinner preparations.
Thinking of the horrible experience of last night, Fiona declines, "It's okay."
"You sure? Don't you feel lonely living by yourself?"
"I'm used to it... after all, I came from the palace."
"That's true."
Thinking of the palace again, Fiona grows silent.
Nim Chi apologizes, "I'm sorry for bringing back the issue of the palace."
"That's okay. The only time people avoid issues is when they still hold it in their hearts. When someone can talk freely about it, that means that they have moved on. If I keep avoiding the issue of my past in hopes of moving on, how can I succeed? If I acknowledge it, then it'll be better and I can move on faster because this proves that I don't care about it anymore. If I keep avoiding it, this will just retain it in my memories," Fiona urges.
"Speaking of the palace, what is it like?" Nim Chi is curious.
"You went inside before when Ah Sing and I got married."
"Oh, that's right!"
"However, since you seem to have forgotten, I'll refresh your mind." Fiona tries to form a picture in her head. "It's located in the middle of the island and consists of numerous palaces. Four tall red walls surround the palace. There's an imperial garden as well as a pond. It's so pretty there. It's so big that I haven't gone into every crevice yet."
"I remember now. It looks like a smaller version of the imperial palace in Beijing," Nim Chi says.
Fiona nods her head, "My people were inspired by the ancient Chinese because, after all, we descended from China."
"Oh?"
"My ancestors were sent into exile during the Ming dynasty to the Island. They discovered that it held a lot of gold and riches. That was how we became rich. We quickly formed trade negotiations around Europe. Then..." Fiona continues to tell the history of her home with Nim Chi listening intently.
"So," Fiona concludes, "You can say that while the Ching dynasty fell and China lost its tradition of emperors, we on the Island retained this aspect of ancient China. In a sense, we are like what ancient China would be in modern times."
Nim Chi could see the fire in Fiona's eyes. When she talked about her home, she sounded so passionate. "Fiona," Nim Chi begins, "If you don't mind me asking... what exactly happened that caused you not to be a princess anymore?"
Fiona pauses for a few seconds as she finishes decorating a plate of food and says simply, "We were exiled."
Even though Nim Chi wanted to ask her for more details, Fiona had left the kitchen to bring the dish outside to the dining table, so Nim Chi did not get the chance to.
[Living Room]
The Kams were in a hysteria watching that night's episode of "Gai Dai Foon Siu." Fiona found herself finally being able to enjoy "Gai Dai Foon Siu" and began to understand why the Kams all loved watching it so much. She was laughing along with everyone else on the couch. She finally felt like a true member of the Kam family. During the commercial break, Ah Sing (Hawick Lau) called her.
"Ah Sing!" Fiona says happily.
"What are you doing?" Ah Sing asks.
"I'm watching 'Gai Dai Foon Siu.' You're lucky that it's in the commercial break now!"
"Are you kidding me? You always said it was ridiculous and nonsense before!"
"That was when I didn't appreciate it for its wit. It's so clever and funny."
"I've only been gone for two days and you change so much? What am I going to do with you when I'm back?"
Fiona laughs, "So how are things in Japan? Are the talks going well? How is Michelle?"
"She's fine. We're having dinner now."
"So late?"
"We just got out of a meeting. Oh, Ah Lam says 'hi.'"
"Hey, 'Gai Dai' is almost going to be back on soon now, so I'm going to go."
"Wait. Are things okay with you?"
"Yeah, everything's great. Don't worry about me!"
"Are you sure?"
"Ah Sing, you said it yourself. I have mother-in-law and everyone else. Your family is huge."
Ah Sing gives up, "Okay. Enjoy 'Gai Dai' then. Make sure you tape it for me! Over in Japan, they're so behind."
Fiona blows a kiss into the phone and says, "Good luck and I'll see you when you get back."
Just when "Gai Dai Foon Siu" was back on the air, the doorbell rings. Everyone in the room complains and whines about who it could be that was ruining their enjoyment of "Gai Dai Foon Siu." Fiona decides to sacrifice her own enjoyment and says, "I'll answer it."
She gets up from the couch and squeezes her way out. Whoever it was at the door was impatient for they kept ringing the doorbell and had started to pound on the door. "Calm down! I'm coming," Fiona shouts at the doorway. She finally reaches the door and turns the knob. When the door was fully open, Fiona's eyes widen and she couldn't believe who was facing her.
"Fiona, long time no see," the person standing directly in front of Fiona says.
