Chapter 1

...To live a life without any regrets is the most fortunate thing that can happen to a person. Unfortunately, I am not able to do that. On this day five years ago, happiness crept away from my life and nothing but regrets took its place…

Flash Back 5 years….Los Angeles, California.
“Oh-my-gosh!!! I’M LATE!!!” Qian’s voice filled her whole house on that first morning of September as she jump out of bed.
In a matter of seconds she brushed her teeth and was dressed for school. Dashing into the dining room, Qian saw both her father and stepmother were eating breakfast.
“Honey, sit down. Let me get you some breakfast before you leave for school” her stepmother said as soon as she saw Qian entered the room.
“No thanks. I just going to grab an apple or else I’m gonna be late for my 8 o’clock class and it’s the first day too.”
Her father placed the newspapers that he was reading down on the dining table and turned to face Qian. “Be careful on your way to school, the traffics is not that fantastic. And don’t forget to call your mother today; she was scolding me over the phone last night because you didn’t call her. That woman, she’s too impatient to be a lawyer.”
“Okay, I will.” Qian walked over to her father and stepmother and gave them both a kiss on the cheek before she left for school.
…Qian’s parents were divorced since she was 5. After the divorce, her father moved to Los Angeles. As for Qian, she lives in Hong Kong with her mother. Qian understood that her parents split because of a difference in opinion. Her father is a heart surgeon and her mother is a lawyer. Since her father specializes in heart and lawyers are said to have no hearts. Therefore, they never see eye to eye on anything. Ever since she was 5, Qian would spend 9 months in Hong Kong, and 3 months of summer in Los Angeles with her father. Two years after the divorce, her father was remarried to another woman. Her name is Lily Cheung, she is an L.A native and works as a choreographer. A year after that, her mother was also remarried. Her new father is Dr. James Hsui, he is an old friend of her parents. James and her father went to med school together, and were working in the same hospital. Qian knew that James was always there for her mother, and Lily loves her father very much. Therefore, she accepted the fact and gave them her blessings. Not only that she loves them both as much as her own parents, and in return, they both love her as a child of their own. After her second year in college, Qian was accepted to be an international student at UCLA. So she moved from Hong Kong to L.A. to live and go to school. Today’s her first day…
“I’m sorry I’m late” Qian apologized to her professor when she stepped into a classroom filled with at least 60 pairs of eyes staring at her.
“It’s okay. Just go ahead a grab a seat. I will begin my lecture shortly.”
Qian looked a round the room and spotted an empty seat near the back on the room and started walking toward it.
“Hi! I’m Michelle Yip. What’s your name?” The girl sitting next to Qian said and gave her a smile.
Qian smiled back and said in her perfect but slightly accented English, “Hi, my name is Qian. It’s nice to meet you Michelle.”
“Wow…nice accent. I love it!”
“Why, thank you. I’m an international student from Hong Kong. This is my first year here in UCLA.”
“Is that right? I’m from Hong Kong!! This is way cool. Hey…what are you doing after class?”
“Umm…home, I guess, because this is my only class for today.”
“Same here, you want to hang out after class then?”
“Okay, that would be fun.”
The class went on for about 2 hours and finally it was over. Qian and Michelle walked out of the classroom to find a guy waiting for them. Michelle immediately waved and started walking toward is direction.
“Hey Ray. Have you been waiting for a long time?”
“Nah, not really.” The guy by the name Ray answered.
“Oh, I want to introduce you to my new friend, Qian. She is in my history class.” Michelle then turned to Qian and continued, “Qian this is Raymond Lam, my best buddy of all time.”
“Hi Qian, it’s nice to meet you.” Raymond said and stuck out his hand for a handshake.
Qian returned with a “hello” and shook his hand. Qian found Ray to be very attractive and she immediately developed a good feeling for him.
After exchanging “hellos,” the three of them went off together.

Qian came home to find her father and Lily watching TV in the living room.
“I’m home” she cried out.
“Hi honey,” her dad greeted. “How was school today?”
“Great! I’ve met some really great people.”
“I know, Lily told me that you’ve called.”
Flashing a smile at Qian, Lily said. “Are you hungry? Let me get you some dinner.”
“Nah, I’m okay. I ate when I was out with friends. I’m gonna go to my room to call Mom.”
After she was in her room, Qian picked up the phone and started dialing her mother’s cell phone number.
“Hello? Mrs. Cheung speaking,” her mother picked up after the second ring.
“Hello Mrs.Cheung, I’m calling on behalf of your daughter to ask if you misses her or not.” Qian replied with a devilish smile.
“You little brat….” Her mother lovingly scolded her…
