At the same time in Los Angeles…
Lily, Qian’s stepmother, could no longer take in the fact the Qian was to suffer from her sickness alone while the man she loves has no idea of what was going on. Therefore, she took it upon herself to inform Ray about Qian’s health condition.
Ray was sitting next to Michelle’s hospital bed watching her sleep. ‘She looks so peaceful,’ he thought. Ray’s thought was interrupted by a light knock on the door.
He opened the door to his surprise; Qian’s stepmother was standing opposite of him.
“Mrs. Li, what are you doing here? Is there something wrong with Qian?”
“Hello Raymond. I need to talk to you, it considers Qian. May I have a minute of your time?”
“Yes…of course.”
Ray followed Mrs. Li out to the hospital garden, where they took a seat on a bench.
“I know Qian is going to be mad at me for doing this,” Lily (Mrs.Li) began after a minute of reluctance. “However, I rather her be mad at me than have her suffer during the last few days of her poor life.”
Ray was extremely confused at the words from Lily. A scary thought sparked in his mind. ‘…the last days of her poor life? What is Mrs.Li talking about? Could it be that…?’ Series of questions popped into Ray’s mind but he was too afraid to ask.
“Ray, you know that Qian loves you very much,” Lily continued. “She never stopped loving you for a minute. Therefore, have you ever stopped to wonder why did she give you up without any hesitations?”
“Mrs. Li, what are you trying to say?” Ray could not stand the suspension anymore. He has to find out what is going on.
“Ray, the reason why Qian left you and went back to Hong Kong is because…she has cancer.”
“What?” Ray wasn’t sure of what he was hearing. “You said she has what?”
“The week before we went back to Hong Kong, Qian found out that there was a tumor growing in her brain. There was nothing that the doctor could do because the tumor was located on a dangerous spot. If they were to surgically remove it, her chance of living is only 20%. The only thing they could do right now is chemotherapy, but her tumor has evolved into Grade IV tumor. There’s nothing we could do.”
“Qian…how is she now?” Ray’s voice became lifeless. He could feel his heart was breaking into million pieces.
“She’s not doing well at all. The doctor said her tumor is growing vigorously and she only has a few weeks left,” by now Lily was sobbing.
“I…I have to go see her,” without any second thoughts, Ray stood up and left for Hong Kong on the next flight.
Back in the hospital, Michelle woke up to find a note left behind by Raymond. On the note, it says:
Sorry Michelle, I won’t be able to take care of you. I need to go see Qian right now. Take good care of yourself.
Ray
‘I knew this day would come,’ Michelle thought in tears.
…Hong Kong hospital…
After her chemotherapy session, Qian fell into a deep sleep. A few hours went by, Qian woke up to find the rays of sun lights peaking through her windows.
“Hi Qian! You’re up.”
A female voice interrupted Qian’s peace she turned around to find Nurse Sue, her personal nurse, standing at the door with a wheelchair.
“I was hoping that you’d be up. If you’re feeling better, I can take you outside to enjoy the sun lights. It’s a beautiful day outside,” Nurse Sue continued.
“That would be great,” Qian said flashing one of her biggest smile.
Nurse Sue was right, it was beautiful outside. It has been a long time since Qian went outside. Her medication did allow her to move around much. She was always too weak to do anything. Today, she was finally able to go outside and breathe in some fresh clean summer air, although she was in a wheelchair and is not allowed to walk around, but this is enough. ‘If only Ray is here with me,’ Qian’s happy face was gone and now is being replaced by a sad and lonely expression.
Nurse Sue noticed this and knew that Qian would rather be alone, so she took a few steps back and sat on the other side on the hospital garden.
Qian gave the nurse a grin in appreciation. She really wanted to be alone to think about that “somebody.” Little did she know, that “somebody” was watching her behind a tree a few feet from there.
Looking at Qian’s tiny body made Raymond heart ache.
“Can’t you see how much Qian has suffered?” Lily asked. Ray was too occupied with looking at Qian that he didn’t notice Lily beside him.
Seeing that Ray didn’t retaliate, Lily continued. “After her chemotherapy sessions, she began to get the side effects immediately. She lost 10 pounds in one month. My poor baby, she was already so thin. Her mother and I would make her porridge, but she could never eat it because she would throw up what ever she ate. Her beautiful long hair is now half gone. And all we could do is stand back on watch. It just hurts me so much when I think of it.”
Without any hesitation, Ray began walking towards where Qian is sitting. Nurse Sue saw him and was about to tell him to leave Qian alone, but she was signaled by Lily to keep quiet.
“Qian?” Ray called once he was standing right in front of Qian.
Qian slowly looked up and saw Raymond standing in front of her. A look of happiness spread across her bloodless face. But her happiness only lasted for a few seconds then evaporated into a fearful state.
“Nurse Sue! Nurse Sue! I think the drug is affecting me. I’m having one of those hallucinations again! What should I do?!? What should I do?!?” Qian’s cry became hysterical, tears came pouring out from her eyes, and her hands were waving in the air as if she was trying to push Ray’s image out of the way.
“Qian, Qian. It’s me. I’m right here,” Ray tried to stop her arms from waving with his hands. “Qian, look at me,” he sad calmly after he succeed in stopping her from shaking. “Look at me in the eyes. I’m right here, I’m right here by your side. It’s not a hallucination. I’m right here.”
Qian hesitated for a minute then looked at Ray. Using her hands, she traced her fingers on the outline of his face features: his forehead, his eyebrows, his eyes, his cheekbones, his nose, his lips, and his chin.
“You are here! You are physically here. I’m not hallucinating, you are here,” Qian couldn’t help but broke down and cry.
Ray could no longer help himself; he pulled Qian into his tight embrace and cried also.
“Qian, I’m so sorry. I should have been there for you when you needed me most. But I wasn’t. Please forgive me. I will never leave you again. Never.”
As if Qian suddenly thought of something important. She immediately broke free of Ray’s hug and pushed him away. Using both of her hands she covered up her face.
“Go away! I don’t want to see you! Go away!”
“Qian…why? Is there something wrong?”
“No there’s nothing wrong! I just don’t want to see you. GO AWAY!!!”
“NO! I’m not going anywhere,” Ray, once again, pulled Qian into another tight hug. “Qian, I’m not going anywhere this time.”
“No, no. You…I…I can’t let you see me like this. You’re going to be disgusted by me.”
“Don’t be silly. You’re always the most beautiful girl in my eyes. Please don’t tell me to go away. I don’t think my heart can with stand your rejection anymore.”
Knowing that she could no longer escape from Ray’s embrace, Qian put her arms around him and cried her happy tears on his shoulders.
