Ray opened his eyes and saw the girl he loves lying on the white hospital bed. His heart twisted in knots and he touches her face. His trembling fingers traced along her forehead, her eyes, her nose, her lips. He had fell in love with her angelic once before, and he is falling in love with her all over again. He had never felt such great passion toward another being in this life. He knew that without her, his life will become blandness. Tears began to trickle down Ray’s face as he caresses Qian’s face.
“Qian, I’m so sorry for letting you suffered all by yourself. If I had known what you went through these past weeks, I would have left for you in a heartbeat. Why, why didn’t you let me know? Why did you kept this from me? Is it because of Michelle? I know I have been a horrible person, I didn’t handle thing very well. I was confused with my feelings. Yes I did love Michelle, but after I met you and with all the things that we went through together, my love for her faded. I was determined to be with you for the rest of my life. But when I saw Michelle on that sick bed, I was struck so hard by guilt that I didn’t know what to do. I ended up hurting you, the woman I love most. Will you ever forgive me? Qian-ah, I love you. I love you with all my heart and soul. I promise you, I will never ever let anything come between us again.”
Ray then leaned in and placed a soft kiss on Qian’s forehead. By this time, Qian was also crying. His words have touched her heart, and warmed her soul. She wrapped her arms around Ray and pulled him into a lovingly embrace.
“I love you too, you little punk,” she replied with a smile.
While the two love birds were holding each other, a pair of envied eyes was looking at them. After Ray left to Hong Kong, Michelle also left for Hong Kong. Going against doctor’s orders, Michelle wanted to come and see this for herself. And now, she has found her answer. Ray’s love for Qian is greater than she thought, and Qian’s love for Ray is much deeper than her love for him. At that moment, Michelle knew that nothing could tear these two apart, at least nothing in this earthly realm.
*Knock, knock*
Qian and Ray looked up to find Michelle standing at the door. They immediately let go of each other’s embrace and a shameful look appeared on their faces as if they had been caught doing a dirty deed. Michelle noticed this and felt a bit embarrassed by her presence.
“M-Michelle, what are you doing here?” Ray asked.
“Well, I received your note, so I figured there must be something wrong. That’s why I came all the way here,” Michelle answered, grateful that Ray had broken the silence. She then turned to look at Qian and pouted. “You! I so hate you right now!”
“M-Michelle, I’m so sorry.” Qian replied, expecting Michelle to call her a “back-stabber” a “boyfriend-stealer.”
“Why? Why…why didn’t you let us know that you were sick? Are we not friends?” After scolding Qian, Michelle walked over to her bed and gave her a hug.
“What if something had happened to you? How will I ever forgive myself Qian?”
“I’m sorry,” Qian whispered. They didn’t know when it all happened, but both of them began to cry.
Seeing that his presence was not needed, Ray stepped outside into the hospital’s garden; leaving the two friends to catch up.
Ray found an empty bench in the garden and sat down. Thoughts of Qian flooded to his head. It’s only been a few minutes since he last saw her, but he felt like it has been a decade. Slowly, he reached into his back pocket and took out his wallet. Inside was a picture of him and Qian when they were in California. Looking at the smiling Qian in the picture, Ray couldn’t help the tears from escaping from his eyes and strolls down his face. Until tears were flowing so hard that he could not keep his head up any longer. Buried his head between his hands, Ray began to let it all out.
“Are you alright there buddy?”
Ray looked up to find Michelle standing over him with a forced smile on her face. He quickly dries his eyes and smiled back at her.
“Weren’t you surprised to see me here?” Michelle took a seat right next to Ray on the bench.
“Yeah, didn’t the doctor say that you are not able to leave?”
“He did. But I gave Doctor Li (Qian’s father) a call and asked him to be my personal caretaker on my visit here, and he agreed to it. And the doctors over there couldn’t say anything because I was originally Dr.Li’s patient. Beside, I feel a lot better now.”
“That’s good to hear. Are you…are you…” Ray hesitated.
“Am I mad that you left to Hong Kong?”
“Umm humm.”
“I was, until I found out why.”
“I’m sorry Michelle.”
“No, I should be the one saying sorry. I shouldn’t have kept you with me. I was being selfish. I knew that your heart belongs to Qian, but I still insisted on keeping you all to myself. It was foolish of me.”
“IT wasn’t entirely your fault. I was too slow to make up my mind. I was too confused about everything. But when I found out that Qian does not have many days left on earth, I realized that nothing else matters in this world.”
“I now realized that you two are the perfect couple. Ray, promise me, no matter what happens, live your life to the fullest. Just know that you will always have me as a friend.”
“Thank you Michelle. Thank you very much.”
Michelle leaned in and gave Ray a hug. It was a nice ending to their story. Michelle now realized that there are more meaningful relationships in life than being lovers. She is contented with the friendship that they share.
