Chapter 12
“Wake up sleepy head.”
Qian opened her eyes to see Ray’s grinning face over her.
“What time is it?” She asked.
“It’s 9 o’clock. Wake up; I’ll take you out to the garden. It’s a beautiful day out.”
“Ummm…5 more minutes.”
“Aww c’mon. Waakkeee upppp….”
..
Ray was true to his words, it was a beautiful day. The sun was shining through the leaves of the big oak tree in the garden. Ray pushed Qian’s wheelchair onto the grass and set her wheels there while he took a seat on the grass right next to her.
“Ray?”
“Huh?”
“I…I want to sit next to you on the grass.”
Ray gave her a smile and nodded his head.
Underneath the big oak tree, the couple sits side by side, with their heads leaning against each others, and their hearts beating as one.
“If only this moment would be forever,” Qian broke the silence.
“It will be forever…in my heart.”
“Ray, I don’t want to die.”
“Qian…”
“I know I don’t have many days left. I…I don’t want to leave like this Ray. I have so many things that I wanted to do, so many wishes to fulfill. I have so many words that I want to say, so many feelings that I want to express. I don’t want to leave like this. I don’t want to leave the people I love and the people who love me. I don’t want to leave the people that I care for and the people that care for me. I, especially, do not, in a million years, want to leave you…”
“Qian…” tears were forming in his eyes.
“No, let me finish. Ray, do you know how much I love you?”
“I do.”
“I’m glad that you do. Ray, there are so many things that I want to do for you. I’m sorry I won’t be able to do them. Thank you for loving me.”
Listening to her words, Ray felt as if there are millions of arrows piercing through his heart. He didn’t know what to do but to pull her into his arms.
“No, thank YOU for loving ME. Qian, you don’t have to do anything for me. I am contented with everything that you had given me. No more.”
“Ray? Promise me that you’ll forget about me.”
“NO! I won’t promise you that. I can’t promise you that. I will always remember you even until the day I die. Please don’t ask me to forget about you. Because, without you I have no memories.”
Seeing that she had lost the fight, Qian stayed quiet in Ray’s arms.
“What should I do? Even with you in my arms, I still missed you so much. How will I able live without you?” Ray said and tightened his embrace.
“I miss you too.”
At that moment nothing else existed in this world for the both of them. It seemed as if the world has stopped turning so that the couple could enjoy their love for each other a while longer. As Ray and Qian was approaching Qian’s room, they found her stepfather pacing back and forth in the door way.
“James! Is there something wrong?”
“Qian, honey. Where have you been?”
“Ray took me into the garden for some fresh air. Why? What happened?”
“Your friend Michelle was hospitalized.”
“Hospitalized?!? Why?” Ray asked.
“She was having one of her attacks earlier today.”
“Attack? But she was fine a few days ago.” Ray said in confusion.
“Well, heart attacks come and go. You never know what will happen next.”
“How is Michelle doing now?” Qian asked.
“She’s in a very critically condition. Your father is taking care of her right now.”
“Oh, at least she under my dad’s care. Ray, why don’t you go and see how she’s doing?”
“Are you going to be okay by yourself?” Ray hesitated.
“I’ll be fine. Beside, James is here with me.”
“Yeah Ray, you go ahead. I’ll take care of Qian.”
“Okay,” Ray finally agreed. “I’ll be right back okay?”
Once Ray left the room, Qian turned to Dr. Hsui and asked. “What is Michelle’s chance of recovering?”
“To tell you the truth, it’s not very optimistic.”
“Are you saying that she’s going to die too?”
“Well, not necessary. There is a high chance for her living is she receives a heart transplant. But, the number of organs donor in our country is so low that it’s almost impossible to find one.”
“I see. What are the curriculums of an organ donor?”
“Well, that person needs to have the same blood type. Their organ must be healthy and normally functioning. Why?”
“Oh, no. I was just wondering.”
