Chapter 13

…A few days later…

“SURPRISE!!!”
Michelle almost fell out of her wheelchair when the nurse was pushing her into her room. In the room, there was everyone standing in a half circle clapping and laughing. Behind them was a big and beautiful banner that says “~*~HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICHELLE!!!~*~”. Yes, it was her birthday. She was, no doubt, surprised and touched at everyone’s presence. There was Qian (also in a wheelchair), Raymond, and Qian’s family. Since her stay here in Hong Kong, Qian’s family has taken her in as one of their own and treated her with love and care. Therefore, seeing them here on this day wishing her a happy birthday was more than what she had wished for.’
“Happy birthday Michelle, I would give you a hug, but I think it’s gonna be a little difficult,” Qian said with a grin on her face.
“It’s okay Qian, I can feel it,” Michelle smiled back.
“Well, Qian can’t hug you. But we could,” Lily laughed.
Everyone began to bombard Michelle with hugs and birthday wishes. It was a joyous scene for everyone.
‘I’m so so glad everyone is happy.’ Qian smiled and thought to herself.
Then it was time for presents. Qian’s father and his wife was the first to give Michelle the gift, and then it was her mother and step-father. Ray was the last one to give Michelle his gift.
“Qian? You don’t have anything for me?” Michelle asked with pouted lips.
Qian smiled and said. “I’m saving the best for last.”
“Ooh, I’m so anticipated,” Qian’s mom said while rubbing her palms against each other.
“Well…” Qian let out a sigh and continued. “I’ve decided to give you…my heart.”
Everyone in the room went quiet, so quiet that they could hear the ticking of the clock on the wall.
“No! You are not going to do that!” Qian’s mom opposed.
“Honey, there are many other factors aside from just donating an organ,” her father said.
“Dad, I know. I’ve talked to James about this.”
Every eye in the room went towards Dr. Hsui direction.
“Yes, we did talk about it Qian. But you never said that you wanted to be the donor.”
“I know I didn’t. But you told me that the curriculums for an organ transplant to be a success is that we need to have the same blood type. I’ve checked and Michelle and I are both type O. Also, you said that the organs must be healthy and functioning normally, I have asked and that every organ in my body is functioning just fine. Therefore, I see no problem in donating my organs.”
“NO! NO! I won’t let you do this!” Qian’s mom was angry at the idea of her only daughter being cut up after she was dead. The pain was too much for her to handle that she had to leave the room.
“I have made up my mind. Please, don’t try to talk me out of it.”
“Qian, are you sure about this?” her father said.
“Yes.”
“*sighed* Okay, there is nothing else we can do. I am not thrilled with this idea, but it’s your choice. I will tolerate it.”
“Thank you daddy.”
“Oh, my brave daughter.” Dr. Li leaned in and gave his daughter a hug. “I will talk to your mother.”
“Could I please talk to Qian alone?” Michelle finally speaks.
“Okay, you two talk.”
Everyone began to leave the room. Raymond hesitated, but left once Qian gave him a nod to indicate that she is going to be alright.
“Qian…you want to explain all this to me?” Michelle spoke once everyone was gone.
“Michelle, I really want you to have my heart.”
“Why? Why do you want to do this to me? Are you feeling sorry for me? Is that why? You’re feeling sorry because you think that Raymond didn’t want me because of you. Do you know that by doing that, I will be forever indebted to you? I don’t want your heart.”
“Michelle, please don’t take this the wrong way. I am not, in anyway, feeling sorry for you. I just want you to live that’s all. I don’t want to see a person that I love so much leave this world. And beside, I need you to be here to take care of Raymond once I’m gone. I know it is selfish for me to ask you to be his eternal guardian, but I am. I know Raymond will let himself go once I’m gone, that’s why I need you to be there for him. I want you to take my spot in his life.”
“Qian, you are so naive. Don’t you know by now that the person that Raymond loves is you and only you? He will not accept me.”
“He will in time. Honestly speaking, I’m doing this not just for you, but it’s also for me. I want a part of me to be close to him. I’m afraid that once my heart stop beating, my memory of him will be forever gone. Therefore, keeping my heart alive is like keeping our love alive. So, will you please do me this favor?”
“Qian…please don’t make me do that! Please.”
“Michelle, I know that on this world you are the one person that loves Raymond as much as I do. Therefore, I have thought this over time after time. So will you please accept this gift?”
Michelle stood up and reached for Qian’s hand, she can see in Qian’s eyes that she has made up her mind. Michelle felt a lump at her throat and let out a cry, tears were pouring out from her eyes.
“Qian, I don’t know what to say. No matter what you will always be my best friend.”
With that said Michelle turned around and ran out of the room.
Qian’s eyes followed Michelle figure out the door and tried hard to blink away her tears.
Outside, Michelle bumped into a confused and heartbroken Raymond.
“Michelle is everything alright?”
“I…I’m sorry.” Without any other words, Michelle took off running.
Raymond slowly approaching Qian’s door, through the tiny opening he could see that Qian is crying. Lightly, he knocked on the door.
“Come in.”
“Hey you, how are you feeling?”
“Umm…I’ve been better,” Qian let out a light laugh.
After a moment of hesitation Raymond finally spoke.
“Qian…”
“You want to ask me why I made that decision. Right?”
Ray nodded his head.
“I know my condition right now. I know I won’t be living any longer and I want to, before I die, do something great. I really want to do this for Michelle. Will you support me?”
“Qian, you know I will always stand behind you in whatever situation. I really admire your courage. But please promise me one thing.”
“What is it?”
“Don’t let yourself go because of this. I want to be able to spend as much time with you as possible. From now on, I will spend every minute of my day with you.”
“Umm…I guess,” they both let out a weak laugh. Then caught each other’s gaze, their lives have intertwined with each other in a way that it is impossible to be one without the other.
‘How will I be able to leave him behind?’ Qian asked herself over and over again while looking into Ray's eyes.
