Chapter 15

They decided to find a place to sit to enjoy the beautiful sun set.
Sitting on the secluded area with Ray, Qian felt at ease. Everything was so calm and serene that it makes her feel so relaxed and safe.
“If only this would last forever,” Qian whispered.
“Mm-hmm”
All of a sudden Qian cried out.
“Ray, look! Dolphins! Oh my gosh, am I dreaming?”
“No, no. I’m seeing them too.”
“Wow! That was amazing; I didn’t know we were able to see them.”
“Well I guess miracles do happen huh?”
“Yeah, they do.”
After watching the dolphins sunk away from the horizon, the couple went back to their state of serenity. Slowly, Qian felt herself weakened. Before she knew it, her body suddenly collapsed. Luckily Ray was fast enough to catch her.
“Qian! Qian! Are you okay?”
“Ray, I feel so sleepy.”
”No you can’t sleep. Not right now. We still haven’t seen the sunset yet. You can’t sleep. C’mon open your eyes.”
“Ray, I don’t think I’ll be able to see the sunset. My eyes, they’re so heavy. I…I just want to take a nap. A short one, I promise…”
“NO! You can’t. You promised me that you’re going to watch the sunset with me. Qian, please, don’t fall asleep.”
Ray’s grip became tighter as if he was trying to prevent Qian’s soul from escaping her body. Inside he knew that the time has come for them to be apart, but he was doing everything he could to keep her next to him. He was not about to let her go like this.
As for Qian, she began to feel her body become lifeless. Ray’s pleading voice became distance and his face grew into a white blur. Her voice was calling out to him but no sound came out. Her eyes grew heavier and heavier until all she sees was total darkness.
‘Good-bye Ray. Thank you for all the love you have given me. I am truly the happiest person in this whole world. Please remember me…’
Suddenly, a white ray of light appeared. The white light was so bright and attractive that Qian couldn’t help herself but to walk towards it. Before she stepped into the light, Qian turned a round and took a last look at Ray’s image and whispered.
“I Love You.”
Meanwhile, Ray grip loosen as he realized that her body became lifeless. Her eyes were closed and her breathing became weaker and weaker as the seconds drift by.
“Qian! I know you can hear me. I just want to say that I truly love you and that I will always always remember you. Please don’t forget me. I won’t be able to see you any time soon. But when the time comes, I hope that we will once again united in heaven and continued our love affair. Sweet dreams my love.”
With that said Ray leaned in and placed a soft kiss on Qian’s cold lips. Tears from his eyes dropped onto her cheeks.
Behind them, the sun was slowly setting behind the horizon, leaving the world in total darkness…

…5 years later…
Stepping out of the airport Ray felt a sense of familiarity with this place. It has been five years since he left Hong Kong never once did he not wanted to come back. However, he was not able to face the pain that this place held for him. It took him five long years to finally accept reality, and helped him face his nightmare.

Ray stood in silence in front of Qian’s grave; with him was a young baby girl at about 5 years of age.
“Hi Qian, I’m back to visit you. I’m sorry it took me such a long time to come back, but…did you know that you’re one hard thing to get over? But, I’m here with you now. I hope you like the flowers I brought you. Water lilies, they’re your favorite. I have so much to tell you about my life during the past five years. But first of all, I want to introduce you to someone very special to me.”
Ray then looked down at the baby girl and then back at Qian’s grave.
“This is Lam Xiao Qian. She is our daughter. Surprised, aren’t you? The thing is that after you past away, I felt so empty. My life was not the same. All I felt was loneliness every moment of everyday. I nearly lost my mind because I missed you so much. So I’ve decided to leave Hong Kong for Los Angeles, where our love begins. I then spent everyday going back to the places we’ve been to. By being at those places I felt less and less lonely. Then one day, when I was at the park where we would take our evening walks together, I found a baby girl abandoned by her family. She was so beautiful; her big round eyes reminded me so much of you. So I decided to adopt her under our names and named her Xiao Qian. I hope you don’t mind I took your name.”
He then looked at Xiao Qian and said.
“Xiao Qian, say “Hi” to your mommy.”
“Hi mommy. Xiao Qian loves you.” Xiao Qian then went and placed a kiss on her mother’s picture on the tombstone.
Ray beamed with tears in his eyes.

“Hi Ray.”
Ray turned around and to his surprise; Michelle was standing in back of him.
“Michelle!”
“Hi Ray. How are you?”
“I’m fine. How about you?”
“I’m great! I knew you’d be back.”
“Yeah, I could never leave her.” Raymond said looking at Qian’s grave.
“So, is this your daughter?”
“Yeah, this is Xiao Qian.”
“Xiao Qian. Hi Xiao Qian! How are you? My name is Michelle; you can call me Auntie Michelle. ”
“I’m fine thank you Auntie Michelle.”
At that moment Xiao Qian saw a little butterfly flew by and ran after it.
“Sweetie, don’t go too far!” Raymond shouted after her.

“How was thing for you during the past five years? You left and didn’t even bother to write to us once. How cold!”
Raymond smiled and answered. “Sorry, I was too busy…getting over myself.”
“It’s okay. We all did.”
“So, how about you? How did things go for you?”
“Everything was and is wonderful. After the operation, it didn’t take me long to recuperate. And I’ve been living and breathing fine with my new heart since.”
“That’s great.”
“Yeah. But I wouldn’t have all this if it wasn’t for Qian. She saved my life; I really owed her big time.”
Without waiting for Raymond to answer, Michelle continued.
“Before she died, Qian asked me to take care of you and her family. I was able to fulfill half of her wish. But the other half… After you left, Qian’s family took me in. Maybe it was because that I have her heart; there was a sense of familiarity between me and her family. I now see them as my immediate parents, and I promised Qian that I will spend the rest of my life taking care of each and everyone of them. But you, I wasn’t able to take care of you like I have promised her. But now I see that you are fine, I guess that you didn’t need my care after all.”
Michelle then wrapped her arm over Ray’s shoulders and said. “Keep your head up buddy.”
Ray replied with a smile.
Knowing that Ray wanted to be alone with Qian, Michelle let go of his shoulders and began to run after Xiao Qian while yelling. “Miss Xiao Qian, I’m coming for yooouuuuu.”
Shifting his attention back to Qian, Ray took out the necklace that QIan had given back to him 5 years ago with their rings on it. He took both rings out and slipped one onto his ring finger, and the other one, he buried it right underneath her tombstone.
“Qian, I’ve always carried these rings with me in the past five years. I didn’t put mine on because I wanted to put it on in your presence. I hope you will accept it and be my wife. I’m five years too late, but during the past five years I’ve realized that I could never love another woman. My love for you never changed, not in five years, not in ten years, or ten million years; my love your you still the same. Therefore, Qian, don’t worry about me. I’m okay, because I’m not lonely. I now have Xiao Qian, and I will always have the memories of you… I love you.”

The sun slowly sinks behind the horizon…
