“They’re going to be okay,” Qian tried to console Ray once the ambulance showed up.
David was announced dead on the way to the hospital.
Michelle was a little luckier. However, she was unconscious for almost 2 weeks. Through all that time, Ray was by her side 24/7.
…2 weeks later…
“Ray? How about you go home and get some sleep huh?” Qian’s voice interrupted the quietness of the hospital room.
“No, I don’t want to leave. What if she wakes up and I’m not here?” Ray answered in a low tone.
“How is Michelle going to feel when she wakes up to find you looking like this? Look at yourself. It’s only been two weeks and you look so thin. Stop punishing yourself.”
“I don’t care. I deserve to be punished. I shouldn’t have left them behind that day. If I had driven slowly, then I wouldn’t have lost sight of them and none of this would happen. David wouldn’t have died, and Michelle…” it was too painful for Ray to continue.
“Ray…” before Qian could finish her sentence, Michelle fingers suddenly showed a sense of consciousness.
“Qian, Qian, call the doctor. I think she’s conscious,” Ray’s eyes were full of hopes.
“Okay,” without saying any much else Qian took off to find a doctor.
When she returned to the room with the doctor, she found Michelle widely awaken and Ray sitting on the bed with her, holding her hand.
“Michelle!” Qian rushed over to give Michelle a hug. “Thank god you’re awake. You scared me half to death.”
“I’m okay now Qian,” Michelle replied slowly. “I’m glad to see you guys too. Where’s David?”
“D-David…umm…” Qian was unsure whether or not she should tell Michelle about David at this moment.
“We’ll tell you some other time,” Ray cut in before Qian could tell Michelle.
“No, tell me now. Qian?”
“David…David died on his way to the hospital” qian had no choice but to answer.
“NO! YOU LIED! He couldn’t have…Qian…stop playing with me,” but Michelle knew that Qian was not playing when she saw the look on Qian’s face. “You’re not kidding are you? Oh-my-gosh David…David…Dav…”
Michelle began gasping for air before she could finish the sentence. The news was too much for her to handle at this moment. The doctor and nurses immediately went to work to keep Michelle conscious.
“If you two could please wait outside,” the doctor requested.
