Chapter 7

“Why did you have to tell her about David’s death?” Ray shouted once they were outside.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to, but I had no choice but to tell her. I didn’t think it would make such a big impact on her. I’m so sorry,” Qian cried. She had never seen Ray so mad before, this side of his is really scaring her.
“Doctor…doctor…how is she doing?” Ray jumped once he saw the doctor exited the room.
“Her condition is stable now. However, she’s still very weak. Are you her family?”
“Yes, yes I am,” Ray replied. “Why? Is there something wrong?”
“Well, during her stay here in the hospital, we’ve have done some testing on her body and we’ve found that she was having heart failure. That was the reason why it took so long for her to regain consciousness after the accident. Also, just right now, she was in so much shock that her heart stops beating for a second. Thankfully we were able retrieved it right away. Like I said her condition is stable now.”
“Doctor, you said that she was having heart failure? Is she going to be alright?” Ray asked.
“Well, heart failure is when the heart doesn’t pump enough blood throughout the body. Causing the body to malfunction.”
“What can we do about it?”
“The only thing to do is to have a heart transplant. However, right now, there is a shortage of heart donors. Therefore, I cannot guarantee that we will find a heart that will fit for your friend in there.”
“What are you saying? Are you saying that there’s no hope?” Ray was getting furious.
“No, I’m just saying that we will try our very best to do what ever that is necessary.”
“Doctor, please. You have to save her. I’ll do anything. Just promise that you will save her.” Ray begged.
“We will do our best. That’s all I can say.”
“Thank you doctor,” Qian finally spoke up.
The doctor gave Ray and Qian a nod and walked off.
After seeing the doctor leave, Qian turned around to see Ray walking aimlessly toward Michelle’s room. Standing outside the door looking in, Qian saw Ray sitting beside Michelle’s bed. He held Michelle’s hand tightly in his and spoke to her in a soft voice. His eyes were filled with tears. Even though Qian knew better than to be jealous at this moment, but she couldn’t help but feel bitter inside. Qian left once she could no longer handle the sight of the man she loves caressing another woman’s face.

For the next 2 weeks, Ray spent all his time awake at the hospital right by Michelle’s side. Qian was worried about Ray’s health and had asked him to get some rest, but he acted as though he didn’t hear her. Holding all her sadness and disappointments inside, Qian stayed by his side and gave him all her supports.
It was a day like every other day. Qian woke up to find some more blood on her pillows. ‘What’s wrong with me?’ she thought to herself. ‘Oh…crap. I need to take some breakfast to the hospital for Ray.’ Pushing all her thoughts aside, Qian got out of her bed and went into the bathroom.
“OHMIYGOD!!! Qian! Where are you honey?!?!” Qian heard her stepmother’s frightful voice and immediately thought about her bloody pillows.
‘Lily must have seen my pillow cases.’
“Lily? I’m in the bathroom. What’s wrong?” Qian finally answered.
“Honey,” Lily said once QIan stepped into the room. “What happened? How come your pillows are full of blood?”
“Oh. It was nothing. My nose was bleeding that’s all.”
“What? Since when did you get nose bleeds? You’ve never had that when you were little.”
“I don’t know. But I’m okay now. So don’t worry. Don’t tell my Dad yeah? I don’t want him to be worried.”
“Okay, I won’t tell your dad. But I’m going to take you to the hospital to get that checked out right now.”
“Lily, that won’t be necessary. Beside, I need to bring Ray some breakfast.”
“Good, since you’re going to the hospital anyway. We can stop by your father’s office and tell him about your bloody nose.”
“Alright, alright. I’ll…I mean…WE’LL go check it out.”
“Okay. Oh, honey. You scared me half to death just now.” Lily said and gave Qian a lovingly hug.
Qian smiled to herself and thought about her parents…ALL OF THEM…. Although, Qian’s parents are no longer together, but she still considered herself lucky because her step-parents love her like one of their own.

…hospital…
“Doctor, is there something wrong with my daughter?” Lily asked once the doctor came out from the check up room.
“Well, we’ve just drawn some of her blood. We will run some tests and will let you know by the end of this week.”
“Oh okay. But, is it something serious? She has been very tired lately, and her nose would bleed almost every other day…”
Lily stopped talking once she saw Qian coming out from the check up room.
Taking a seat right next to Lily, QIan asked the doctor.
“Will I be alright?”
“Qian, as for now, I cannot tell whether or not you’ll be alright. Like I told your mother, we will run some tests on your blood and we’ll let you know. As for the time being, just take care of yourself.”
“Okay, thank you doctor.”
A week has gone by. Ray did not call nor come to see her. Qian felt hey days have become dull and unbearable. It was a week ago that she went to get a health check up; today should be the day that her test results arrive. But why hasn’t the doctor called her? Is her condition that bad? Many thoughts are running through Qian’s mind like a carousel.
…Ring…Ring…
Qian’s thoughts were interfered by the sound of the house phone.
“Hello? Li’s residence…Yes, this is Mrs. Li…yes…yes…thank you very much, we’ll be right there.”
“Qian honey!” Lily went to Qian’s room after she hung up the phone. “That was Doctor Weissmen, he said your test results came back and he wants to speak with you immediately. He sounded concerned.”
