Chapter 8
…hospital…
“Hello Mrs. Li, Qian,” entered Dr. Weissmen.
Both ladies gave Dr. Weissmen a nod and smiled.
“Qian, as you may know, your test results has arrived. When you came in last week, I was told that you were having nose bleeds and you would always feel exhausted. After ran your blood through some testing, we found that your immune system is very weak and your red blood cells count is very low. These are immediate symptoms of leukemia.”
“What are you trying to say doctor? Are you saying that I have cancer?”
“There is a high chance of that. But we would like to make sure of it. Therefore, we need to do some more testing on you. And we also need to perform a CAT scan.”
“No, that can’t be. Cancer doesn’t run in my family. How could that be? There must be a mistake. I must be tired from everything that was happening in the past few months.”
“Well, the only way to find out s to do some more testing.”
“Lily…” Qian turned to her stepmother for comfort and protection.
“Oh honey,” Lily took Qian into her arms, tears running down her face. “My poor child.”
During the next few days, Qian was in and out of hospital for different series of testing. On the day after the last testing, Dr. Weissmen called her whole family in for the results. Qian’s family was very worried about her condition. Even her mother and stepfather flew to L.A. from Hong Kong to be there for her.
In Dr. Weissmen’s office, Qian sat in the middle of her parents facing the concerned doctor.
“I’m really glad to see your entire family here with you today Qian. I think throughout this process, you will need your family to support you.”
A hint of fear appeared on everyone’s face. Everyone was anxious, yet afraid to hear what the doctor has to say next.
After he said that, Dr. Weissmen turned off the lights and turned on the X-ray board behind him to show 2 sheets of X-ray of a skull.
“The X-ray images you see up there, the one on the right is a healthy brain. The one on the left is the one that is damaged. Qian, this is your brain.” The doctor pointed to the one on the left, looking directly at the fearful girl sitting across from him.
Qian gasped and covered her mouth with her hand, tears pouring out from her eyes.
“Brain damaged? Are you saying my daughter’s brain is a bunch of mush?” Qian’s father demanded.
Lily immediately grabbed his arm to calm him down.
“No, your daughter’s brain is not mush. QIan, do you see this think black blob on your X-ray?” The doctor then turned to Qian, who now is tearing up.
“Yes. It’s a tumor. Isn’t it?” Qian answered.
The room suddenly went silent and everyone eyes were on Qian. Everyone was stunned by her answer.
“Yes, I’m afraid so.”
“Brain tumor? My daughter has brain tumor? Doctor, are you positive about this?” By now, Qian’s mom was crying hysterically. Not just her mom, everyone in the room was weeping. Except for Qian, tears no longer fall from her eyes, and her face were as blank as can be.
“It curable, isn’t it?” Lily suddenly asked.
“Well, her tumor has developed into a grade IV tumor. It also locates at a very dangerous place in her brain. If we were to perform an operation on her, there is a very low chance that we will succeed. Even so, she would be…”
“…a vegetable.” Qian finished Dr. Weissmen’s sentence for him.
“Yes. If we were able to detect it earlier then we would have been able to shrink it. But now, the tumor is too overgrown for is to do anything. I’m very sorry Qian.”
Dr.Weissmen suggested that Qian should stay at the hospital to get some treatments, but Qian insisted to go home. She didn’t want to stay in the hospital because she knew that Raymond would find out. He had worried so much because of Michelle; she didn’t want to add to his already heavy burden.
Once they got home, Qian went straight to her bedroom and stayed in there, leaving her parents in the living room, discussing about her health.
“I know of a brain specialist, Dr. Portman, I think he might be able to help us out” Qian’s stepfather suggested.
“Yes, yes. Honey you should call him.” Qian’s mom said in tears. “My Qian…oh… my Qian. My poor child, why did this happen to you?”
Lily couldn’t take the pain much longer and went to give Qian’s mom a hug. The two mothers wept for the fate of their loving child. The two men couldn’t face the painful sight and looked away with tears running down their face.
In her room, Qian was also crying, lying on her bed, thoughts were running through her mind…
‘God, why did you do this to me? Have I done something wrong for you to punish me like this? Why do I have to die such an early age? Why did you give me a happy family and not let me live to enjoy it? Why did you give me love and not let me live to pursue it? Why? Why? Why? Mom, Dad, Lily, and James, how will they be without me? And Raymond…oh Raymond, don’t you know that I need you more than anything right now? I need you to be here to tell me that everything’s going to be alright. I need you to hold me in your arms and protect me from all the pains and sufferings that I’m going through. Raymond, where are you?’
Qian felt a sudden urge to see Raymond. The only thing she wanted to do right now is to see and be with him. Running out of her room, down the staircase, into the living room, Qian stood in the living room looking at her weeping parents.
“I need to go to the hospital. I need to go see Raymond.” Qian said with determinacy.
“I’ll take you,” Lily volunteered.
