Chapter 9

…hospital…
Michelle woke up to find herself alone in the white hospital room, she had passed out a few hours ago from one of her heart attacks. Waking up to a lonely room frightened her, Michelle’s first thought was ‘Where’s Ray?’ She has begun to depend on him. Michelle felt lost and began to call for Ray hysterically.
Coming back from the restroom, Ray heard Michelle’s voice calling him, he immediately ran into the room to find Michelle on the bed crying and calling out to him.
“Michelle, Michelle, I’m right here. What’s wrong?”
“Ray! Oh Ray. I woke up and I didn’t see you. I thought you had left. I was so scared. Please don’t ever leave me again. I need you right here with me. Promise me, you will always be by my side.”
“Michelle…I…” Ray immediately thought of Qian. ‘Qian, will she forgive me?’
“I know I have hurt you before. But now, I know who I really loved. That person is you Ray. I’ve always loved you; the only reason why I clung onto my life is because of you. Please don’t leave me. I don’t think I can go on without you.” With this said Michelle pulled Ray into a tight embrace.
Ray was stunned at Michelle’s action. He has waited for this moment since the first time they met. Yet, he was not happy as he had imagined. He knows that Michelle really did love him and he doesn’t want to break her heart. But through time, his feelings for her have changed. He didn’t know what else to do besides consoling her.
“Michelle, don’t cry. I’m not going anywhere.”
Qian’s image occupied Ray’s mind as he hugged Michelle.
Little did he know? Qian was standing outside the hospital room the whole time they were talking. She saw and heard everything.
‘So he had made up his heart. And Michelle is his choice. What’s there for me to do?’ Qian could feel her heart cracked into pieces. Gathered up all her strengths, Qian painted a smile on her face and stepped into the room.
“Qian!” Michelle looked up to see her friend standing there.
“Hi guys,” Qian replied with a smile.
“How long have you been here?” Ray asked, wanting to know if she had heard the conversation between him and Michelle.
“I just got here right now,” Qian answered trying to dodge Ray’s gaze. “How are you feeling Michelle?”
“I’m all better now, thanks to Ray. He’s here like everyday to take care of me. I don’t know what I would do without him.”
Ray and Qian both smiled with an uncomfortable smile. After a few minutes of talking Qian excused herself to leave and Ray wanted to walk her out.
‘Sorry Qian. But I need Ray as much as you do, may be more. Please don’t hate me for all the pain I’ve caused for you. But I can’t live without him.’ Tears gathered on Michelle’s eyes as she watches the two people walk out of the room.

Outside the sun is shining, but once in awhile there would be a calm summer breeze flown by causing the grass to shiver and the leaves shake. Two people stood under the shadow of an overly grown tree. A man and a woman, both of them have a painful look on their face. Though they stood there in silence, but in their heart many words were being said at once.
“I’m leaving to Hong Kong” the woman finally broke the silence.
“What? Leaving? Why?” the man asked hysterically.
“Well you know how I was going to leave in September anyway. So I thought might as well go now so I could get everything ready for the new semester.”
“Qian, are you mad at me? I know I’ve been…”
“No, I not mad at you. I understand.” Qian cut in before Ray could finish.
“Then why do you want to leave?”
“Ray, it’s like how we’ve planned it before. I’ll be going to school in Hong Kong, and you’ll be here.”
“But…”
“I have decided.” Ray knew that Qian was determined to leave. He wanted so much to hold her back, but somehow he wasn’t able to move a muscle.
Qian reached up to her neck and took off the necklace that Ray has given her. Attached to that necklace was a promise ring: a promise between them, a promise that will never be fulfilled.
“Qian…what are you doing?”
“I think you should take this back.”
“Why? Qian…”
“I think you should re-think everything, and once you’re ready give this to the girl that you truly love.”
“I...Qian, please don’t leave. Not like this.”
“Ray, please don’t make this harder than it already is,” Qian was trying her best not to break down and cry. Placing the necklace in Ray’s hand, Qian turned and walked away.
‘Good-bye Ray. This may be the last time we see each other. I’m sorry that I hurt you, but it’s better for you to be hurt now than later. Please live a happy life for me. I love you.’ Tears falling from Qian’s eyes like a waterfall, for the first time in her life she felt hopeless. Walking away from Ray is something that she would never imagined she would do. But reality is reality; she is no longer the same Qian. She living in a life where she does not know when will be her last minute on earth. She doesn’t have the heart to bring such pain to the man she love. Therefore, it’s easier to leave him now than to leave him later.
