“Don’t get what?” Yuri asked.
“I had the interview like two weeks ago! Why am I only starting now? You know how much I could earn if I was still at…” I stopped myself just in time. Whew! That was close! I hope she didn’t notice anything. But then again, there’s nothing to worry about. Her brain’s even smaller than a pea! Hence, why she’s working at a coffee shop… Nuff said… Man, where in the world did I learn to speak like that?
Ok, maybe talking or in this case, thinking bad stuff about her is not so good. You know why? Because I just so happen to be working with her… at the coffee shop. Yes, yes, I know what you’re thinking. Kim Lily, the really smart girl? The one who skipped a grade? She’s working at a coffee shop? You must be kidding me!
I wish I was. I seriously do. Slaving myself this way is much worse! I’ve finally sunk to Yuri’s level! And I’m the smart one! The one that should not, and I repeat, should not, end up working at a coffee shop like a failure!
“Aish! How many times do I have to tell you? You had to wait until that waitress finish the month before you can start! And I thought you’re the smart one…” Yuri said as she rolled her eyes.
“Yah! Stop saying that!”
“Saying what?”
“That I’m smart! I know I am! Buy why does everybody keep telling me that? Gosh…” I said as I shook my head. I was getting really tired of hearing it, to be honest. I’m smart! So what? Whoohoo for me! It’s not their problem. Stop reminding me for God’s sake! I already know!
I tied my hair as I made my way out to the counter. I was in charge of it. At least I wasn’t taking orders. Well, unless they sit at the stools in front of me. I guess that’s ok. But it’s still a lousy job! I think no jobs in the world can compare to what I had before…
I shook my head once again. I cannot be thinking about him right at this very moment! Busy working! Busy… working… Where the hell are all our customers? Why aren’t they here yet? It was Saturday for God’s sake! Hello, ever heard of hanging out? Well, maybe they’re antisocial like me… Hmm… I’ll have to ask Yuri about that…
I yawned and rubbed the corner of my left eye. Why was my finger black? Oh right! I growled under my breath. I can’t believe Yuri actually put make up on me! You know how weird that is? I feel as if someone glued a plate to my face or something! It’s so uncomfortable! I had a chance to look at myself before I went out and let me tell you from the bottom of my broken and defeated heart, I looked like a clown. Maybe I should go join the circus…
I straightened up as I heard the bell above the door jingled and someone came in. I was all ready with a fake smile when I slumped back in my seat. It was only JiEun.
“Gee… I was hoping you’d be a little bit more excited to see me.” She said with a grin.
I rolled my eyes. “I am. This is how I portray my excitement.” I said in a dull tone.
She laughed. “How’s first day at work?”
“So far? Hmm, let’s see. I’ve been sitting here for the past… 10 minutes.” I said.
“10 minutes? Man, you made it sound like an hour or something. I’m sure someone will drop by soon.” JiEun said.
“Do you want anything?” I asked. Might as well ask her since she’s already here…
“The usual.” JiEun said with a smile.
I grinned. “That’s on me then. I can use my employee discount!”
“Really? That’s awesome! Thanks!” JiEun said as she laughed.
Soon after, the coffee shop was flooded with all sorts of people and I was busy as hell. Fat, thin, tall, short, and all sorts of color that I will not list because I don’t want you guys to think I’m racist… Which I’m not by the way! Maybe a little sexist, but never racist. I love all kinds of people except…
I sighed as half of my brain calculated the price while the other half thought of him. It’s been two weeks since that day he talked to me at school. He hasn’t talked to me ever since. I’m not complaining though… I think. He ignored me, which is fine. He refused to do any sort of group work if I’m involved which is also fine. And he didn’t even give me a second glance… which is… not fine. Aish! Why was it not fine? He kept to his word didn’t he? Why aren’t I? I sneaked a few glances whenever he’s around but he pretended as if I was part of the wall or something. I was hurt when he refused to do group work with me but I shouldn’t be right? Because I was the one who told him to stay away! I shook my head to clear my mind. I’m so selfish… but that’s better than being a shellfish… haha, ok… that’s so random that it’s not even funny…
I sat back down when the coffee shop cleared a little and JiEun came to me.
“Hey, I’ll be back later ok? I need to go get that book I want.” She said.
I smiled as I nodded my head.
“Work hard! Hwaiting!” JiEun said as she walked out.
I’m left to my thoughts again. That’s not good. I watched as Yuri mingled with the customers. It must be nice to be as carefree as her. She may be older, but I’m pretty sure she has the IQ of a 10 year old. She was still very much a kid at heart. I think I’ve grown up too fast. I just didn’t want to be a burden… I wanted to help, that’s all… that’s why I took that job at the mansion… I shook my head. I cannot be thinking about him again. Gotta smile! A huge fake smile!
I quickly jumped up when the bell jingled once again. Oh, it was only JiEun. Wait a minute, why was she here again? I thought she’ll be taking a while. Trust me, you do not want to go to the bookstore with her. She stayed in there for ages! I even caught her in it once when the store closed! That was funny! Man, she should just sleep in the library…
My eyes widened in surprise as she came running to me, huffing and puffing tiredly.
“Yah! What’s wrong with you? What happened?” I asked, panicked.
Oh no! Did someone die? Did someone get run over by a truck? Oh no! Oh no! Maybe someone caught on fire!
“Oh my Gosh! You’ll never believe what I just saw!” She said excitedly.
“What? What? What?” I asked hurriedly. She totally just got me hyped up right there…
“You know I have to pass by the park right? To get to the bookstore?” She said.
This is why she came running to me? How is this interesting? I bet she saw a reindeer or something! Although, they don’t really run wild in Korea… I don’t think… But if we’re in the Scandinavia countries, then maybe…
“Yeah…”
“I saw TaeYang!” She exclaimed.
I smacked the back of her head as I rolled my eyes. “Yah! So what if you saw him? He was probably flirting with a girl!” Actually, I haven’t seen him do that once…
“I’m not done! He was with HaeWon! And they were arguing!”
“What? Why?”
“Uhh… Lily ah, you remember that rumor?”
I narrowed my eyes. “About me being a whore? How can I forget?”
JiEun nodded her head vigorously. Man, she looked like a bobble-head doll…
“Well, apparently TaeYang found out that she was the one who spread it.”
My eyes widened in shock. “What? No! That’s not possible! He spread it!”
“No no! She even confessed to him! I swear! I heard everything!” JiEun said quickly.
“What? Then what happened?”
JiEun cast me an odd look before she continued. “Uhh, well. He defended you.”
“What?” I asked again. Man, that was like my 10th what I think.
“Yeah! He told her not to spread another rumor about you or he’ll start spreading some about her as well.”
I shook my head as I sat back down. No, this is so not happening. I blamed him for no reason? And he defended me? Man, that’s a first. I think… I don’t know! I’m so confused right now! And guilty…extremely guilty… ok, I think I know what to do…
“Yah, Lily ah, are you ok?” JiEun asked cautiously.
“Hmm? Oh yeah! I’m fine. Just extremely shock that’s all. Why don’t you go now? The bookstore’s gonna be closed soon.” I said with a small smile.
She returned my smile before she waved and exited the coffee shop.
I placed my head in my hands as I thought over what JiEun said. Did he really defend me? Somehow, that’s not so hard to believe. I should’ve just trusted him when he told me the first time… but hey! It’s not completely my fault that I didn’t trust him at first! After all, he did really spread one about me before that. It’s like that story about the boy who cried wolf. Except there’s no wolf… and there’re real feelings involved…
“Ahem!”
I looked up and plastered a small smile on my face. It was him! Why am I suddenly so nervous? I watched as his eyes widened in surprise before he smirked.
“This is where you work?” He asked.
“Uhh… yeah.” I replied quietly.
“Man, I thought you’re better than this.” He said as he shook his head.
“Uhh… What can I get you?” I asked.
Damn it! He just had to sit in front of me didn’t he? There’re plenty of other seats in here!
“One cappuccino.” He said.
I nodded my head and prepared his coffee. I placed it in front of him and was about to walk away when he grabbed hold of my hand. Damn, there’s that fluttering again… When did I eat butterflies? Must ask Yuri what she puts in her cooking later…
“Stay.” He said as he looked at me.
Surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, I obliged. I didn’t know why, maybe because I wanted to…
“How long have you worked here?” He asked as he tried to start the conversation.
“Uhh… just today.” I replied as I looked down at my hands. It was suddenly so awkward… at least for me…
“Lily ah… Stop looking down and look at me. Look at only me.” He said softly.
My head snapped up at his words. They weren’t much, but they were enough to trigger some sort of funny feeling in me… Must ask doctor what it is… oh man, now I’m speaking like a robot…
“Who are you trying to impress?” He asked with a playful smile.
“Uhh… What?”
He placed his finger on my cheek and showed it to me. Ok, I’m so going to remember that later tonight…
“Make up?” He asked as he raised his eyebrow.
“Oh!” I said as I laughed timidly. “Uhh… yeah.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know actually. Yuri, my sister, was the one who did it.”
TaeYang smiled once again. “Hmm… beautiful. But I think natural beauty speaks more for itself.”
I blushed. I could feel my cheeks burning up. Did he just compliment me? Did he say I was beautiful? Ok, so maybe he never actually said it. He didn’t exactly say, you’re beautiful, but he did imply… I think… He said natural beauty! Does he really think I’m beautiful naturally? If so, he’s the first person to actually say it… And I’m finding it really hard to believe… After all, I am just plain old Lily… oh no! I think my cheeks are on fire!
“What happened to you?” I asked. I wanted to avoid that conversation. And besides, there was a small cut on his cheek that I couldn’t help but notice. Did HaeWon do something to him?
“What?”
“Your cheek.” I said. I grabbed a napkin and wiped the blood away. “Why are you bleeding?”
“And why do you care?” He asked me back, his eyes twinkling playfully.
I stared at him, my mouth wide open before I snapped them shut. “Yah! Don’t you know it’s rude to answer a question with another question?”
“And yet you’re doing the same thing.” He said with a grin.
What? Aish, why did he choose today to be sharp? Not sharp as in the knife blade sharp, sharp as in smart! C’mon people! Keep up with me here!
“I… uhh…”
He laughed. “I got into an argument. No big deal.”
“With who?” I asked. I know I knew, but I just had to hear it from him.
Maybe it was the worry in my voice or maybe it was portrayed on my face, but I was surprised when he actually told me.
“HaeWon.” He replied as he looked at me.
I raised my eyebrow. “HaeWon?”
“Yeah. It’s no big deal. She slapped me that’s all. I think she was wearing a ring, maybe that’s why I bled.” TaeYang said nonchalantly.
That sounded serious for some reason. She had always been so close to him. At least from what I’ve seen at school. I don’t know if it was fake or real but I never actually thought she’d slap him. He let her? Was it because of me? Oh no, what did I get myself into? For some reason, whatever the situation is, it’s pulling me in deeper than ever, just like quicksand…
“I’ll be leaving now. Talk to you later ok?” He said as he placed the money next to his cup.
“Uhh…YoungBae.” I said as I held the money. “This is a lot of tip.”
He smiled as he closed my hand over the paper money. “Keep it.”
I sighed as I watched his retreating back. Maybe now’s probably the right time to trust him. And to finally admit to myself that he’s nice. Yes, and I did say that without shuddering. At least that’s something right? I touched my right hand, the one he held a few moments ago. It was warm and was also tingling slightly. Damn, I don’t understand all these strange stuff that are happening to me! Especially this fluttering in my stomach! Man, I’m really going to start cooking my own food from now on. Cannot trust my evil sister! God knows what else she puts in the food when she cooks. I don’t even want to think about it… but that was because my mind would rather think of someone else… if you catch my drift…
