Chapter 11
“Wake up Qian!!!”
“Ugh, what’s this so early????” Qian complained as Tavia was pulling on to her blanket.
“Rise and shine, we are going hiking today!! Yay!!!” Tavia said and cheered herself.
“HIKING?!?! Nah, I’ll pass. You know how I am with the sun. I’ll be a ripe tomato if I’m out there for about an hour.”
“C’mon. We’ll bring sun block. Don’t be a party pooper uh?”
Qian complained a little more, but then gave in to Tavia’s persuasion.
“Fine, fine. I’ll go. But if my skin gets irritated ‘cuz of the sun, I’m going to kill you.
Tavia came out form Qian’s room to find Ron coming out from Ray’s room. Both gave each other a thumb’s up indicating that they have successfully persuaded those two to go with them on the hike.
…
“What is this? Another friggin’ hill?” Ray’s complaint filled the whole wood. This wasn’t the first time either. Qian had timed it, and she noticed that he would complain every 15 minutes.
“Would you just shut up and walk? No wondered you’re getting a potbelly,” Qian said full of irritation.
“Why should you care if I have a potbelly? Why, do you like me?”
“Hah! That’s a joke.”
“That’s a joke,” Ray mimicked Qian’s words behind her back.
“I saw that!” Qian warned.
“I saw that,” Ray continued to mimic her. Before he knew it, a water bottle flew from Qian’s direction and landed on his face.
“Oops, that slipped,” Qian smiled and continued her hike.
Ron and Tavia just shook their head and laughed as they followed Qian leaving Ray behind with steams coming out from his ears.
“ARGHH!”
Ray heard a loud scream and caught up to Ron and the girls to see what happened.
When he got there, he saw Qian sitting on the floor with Ron and Tavia squatting around her examining her feet.
“What happened?” Ray asked.
“Seems like Qian sprained her ankle,” Ron answered as he was looking at Qian’s foot.
“That’s what she got for abusing me,” Ray said, waiting for Qian’s come back but he didn’t hear anything except for her painful cries.
Ray felt a twinge in his heart and asked in a gentle tone.
“Hey brat. Are you okay?”
“Well, let’s see you sprained your ankle. Are you going to be okay?”
“The little brat knows how to scold people. She’s alright.”
“Ray…that’s enough,” Tavia said seriously. “I think she’s seriously hurt.”
She then turned to Qian and asked.
“Qian, will you be able to walk?”
“I…I don’t think so.” Qian tried to place her foot on the ground, but the pain was too much for her to handle that she let out a cry.
“Tavia, I think you and I should go find a public phone where we could call the ambulance for Qian, since none of our cell phones receive any signal around here. Ray, you stay here with Qian.”
“Wha…me???”
“Yeah, you. Unless you want Qian to stay here all by herself, in the middle of nowhere and nowhere.”
“Alright, alright. Quit making me feel guilty. I’ll stay here with her.”
With that said, they divided into two groups. Ray is to stay with Qian, and Ron and Tavia went to look for help.
“Hey. You alright?” Ray asked once again after they left.
“No…” Qian let out another cry.
“Ugh,” Ray let out a scoff and squatted down in front of Qian.
“Hey! What! What are you doing?!?” Qian screamed as Ray was reaching for her foot.
Without any retaliation, Ray began to gently rub her swollen spot. He was trying to relieve some of her pain.
“Better?”
Qian was speechless; with her eyes wide opened, all she could do was nodded.
“If you knew that you’re a clumsy slob, then why are you walking so fast?”
“Hey! I’m not a clumsy slob!”
“Oh no?” Ray increased his strength causing Qian to let out a tiny squeal.
“Ugh, how could you pick on someone who is injured? You’re so horrible!” Qian said after Ray softened his touch.
“If I didn’t pick on you and took your mind off of the pain, you would still be crying right now.”
Qian then realized that all his criticisms were to help her forget about the pain. A smile spread across her face as she gently looked at the man kneeling in front of her.
They stayed quiet until Ron and Tavia came back.
“Okay, we called for the ambulance. They are coming shortly. But we need to get Qian to the main street, because the ambulance cannot come up here,” Ron said once they returned.
“Qian, can you walk?” Tavia asked.
“I…think,” Qian answered as she tried to stand up, but her injured ankle failed her. Luckily, Ray was fast enough to catch her or else she would have landed on the hard ground.
“You think what? You can’t walk like this.” Without thinking twice, Ray got in front of Qian and bend forward.
“Hop on,” he said.
“Huh?” Qian was confused.
“I said hop on. I’ll carry you.”
“Are…are you sure?”
“Well, I’m not gonna let Tavia carry you. And I don’t think Tavia would like it if Ron carries you. So I have no choice.”
“If it’s so hard to you to carry me. Then forget it.” Qian was a little mad at Ray’s attitude.
“Aww, c’mon. I was only kidding. Beside, you have to do what I said. You owed me, remember?”
Seeing that she has no other options, Qian began to climb onto Ray’s back with the help of Tavia and Ron.
“Are you ready to go home Miss Qian?” Ray asked playfully once Qian was settled on his back.
“Shut up,” Qian said softly as she smiled to herself. Wrapping her arms around Ray’s neck, Qian rested her head on Ray’s shoulder and fell asleep until they arrived at the hospital.
