Chapter 14

After receiving his mom’s letter, Ray decided to follow up on his singing career.
With all his time dedicated into making his first album, in memory of his mother, Ray hardly had time to spend at home. He and Qian would only see each other in the morning during breakfast about once or twice a week, and somehow, Qian began to miss his company.
One day, with nothing better to do, Qian and Tavia decided to pay Ray a surprise visit at his studio.
Ray and Ron are no doubt great business men. Their studio was fully equipped and the atmosphere was very professional. There are singers coming in and out of the studio; Qian recognized some of them, but most of them are new faces being trained by the company.
Looking up from his desk, Ron was surprised to see Tavia and Qian standing at his door.
“Hey?! What are you guys doing here?”
“We came to visit you,” Tavia said and went over to stand next to Ron. “Is Ray in the recording studio?”
“Yeah, he is,” Ron answered and looked at the clock on his desk. “It’s almost lunch time, he should be done by now. How about we’ll go pick him up and we’ll go out for lunch?”
Tavia and Qian both nodded in agreement and followed Ron outside. They walked out of Ron’s room and into a bright lit hallway. There are no specific decorations to this hall, except for one side of it hangs a large poster in a frame. The poster says:
“Music is a Universal Language.”
They then made a stop in front of a wooden door. Ron lightly knocked on it and a young man at about 20 years of age opened the door for them.
Inside was the recording studio. There were four men in that room, one of them was the song writer. He and another man were controlling the sound and volume. Another man was in charge to technicality and the other one was the assistant who opened the door for them. There was a glass window that separated that room with another room, and on the other side to that glassed window stood Raymond. He had his earphones and was so occupied in singing the song that he didn’t notice Ron, Qian, and Tavia’s presence. His voice is truly wonderful; it was full of passion and strength that everyone words escaped his mouth seems to found its way to the listener’s heart.
‘Ray was really born to sing. He has such a comfortable vibe when he is singing. I have never seen him so relaxed before,’ Qian found herself smiling to herself.
“...5, 4, 3, 2, 1. End. Alright Ray, we’re done for the day. Great job!” the writer spoke into the microphone in front of him.
Ray took off his headset and came out from the glassed room.
“Hey guys. How long have you been here?” Ray spoke once he was outside.
“We just came right now. You want to go grab some lunch?” Ron asked.
“Sure,” Ray smiled. Suddenly he remembered something and asked them to wait for him in the parking lot.

“What’s taking him so long?” Qian became worry.
“He’ll be alright, don’t worry.” Tavia smiled.
“I’m not worried about him. What a joke!” Qian scoffed. But a smiled spread across her face as she saw Ray approaching towards them.
“Yeah, you’re not worried at all uh?” Tavia joked into Qian’s ear. Qian in return gave Tavia a little slap on the arm and mouthed “shut up.”

They decided to have sushi for lunch. Sitting on the floor, with the food on a low tea table in front of them, the four friends ate and chatted cheerfully. Throughout the whole meal, Ray looked like he had something to say to Qian but couldn’t say it. He would glance at Qian and then back at his plate, and he would do that once every five minutes. Everyone noticed this but Qian, she was too busy chowing down on sushi, tempura shrimp, and gulping on sake that she did not noticed. Ron nudged Tavia in the elbow and nodded toward Ray and Qian. Tavia seemed to understand what Ron was saying and nodded also.
“Uh…What?!?!” everyone was surprised by Tavia’s loud outburst. “We’re all out of sake. I’m going to get some.”
“I’ll…I’ll help you,” Ron stood up and followed Tavia.
Ray smiled to himself as he understood that those two wanted to give him some time alone with Qian. As for Qian, she shrugged her shoulder and went back to her plate.
After a minute of silence Ray began to spoke.
“Qian…”
“Uh?” Qian looked up from her plate. She was still chewing on her food.
By looking at her face, Ray couldn’t help but chuckled.
‘This pig,’ he thought. ‘But for some reason, she’s so adorable.’
He waited until she finished chewing then said.
“I…uh…I have something for you.” Ray placed a little gift bag on the table and pushed it toward Qian.
“A present? For me???” Qian eyes widened with surprise.
Ray nodded.
Qian smiled and grabbed the bag.
Inside was a little box, Qian un-wrapped the box to find a cute sterling silver necklace inside of it with a pendant of the letter Q. She gave Ray a confused look.
“I just want to say thank you for finding my mother’s letter. The letter meant a lot to me. Therefore, I just want to show my appreciation. I heard you said you lost the necklace Tavia gave you, so I got this for you. I hope you like it as much as you liked the one Tavia gave you.”
“Ray…I…” Qian said. “I found the one that Tavia gave me.”
“Oh, I see,” Ray sounded a little disappointed.
Qian smiled and said. “But I like this one too. Thank you. Do you mind if I put it on right now?”
Ray’s face immediately lit up, he smiled and nodded.
Qian took the necklace out from the box and unhooked the hook. She tried to clasp the hook together but somehow she wasn’t able to do it.
“You…uh…you need help with that?” Ray asked once he saw Qian was struggling with it.
“Ye…yeah…can you help me?”
“Sure,” Ray stood up and walked around to where Qian was sitting. Taking the necklace in his hand, his hand was trembling while he was clasping the hook together. He has never been this close to Qian before, he felt his heart skipped a beat and his cheeks began to burn.
‘I have never felt like this before. Could this be…’ he thought to himself.
“Ray?” Ray snapped out of his thought when he heard Qian’s voice calling for him.
“Ray? Are you alright?”
“Uh…yeah. I’m fine.”
“Thanks, I really like the necklace.” Qian smiled sweetly at him and he smiled back.
Tavia and Ron were watching them the whole time and both were smiling to themselves.
“Qian, I love that necklace! Is it new?!?” Tavia teased Qian while eyeing Raymond once she was back at the table.
Both Qian and Raymond’s face were as red as a tomato.
“What took you guys so long?” Ray questioned. “And where is the sake?”
Ron and Tavia were too busy eavesdropping on Ray’s and Qian’s conversation that they forgot all about the sake.
“Uhh…I’ll get it right now,” Ron and Tavia both jumped and went back to the chef’s corner.
“Those two, really!” Ray exclaimed.
He glanced over to look at Qian and they both laughed./
